iPhone 6 vs. Galaxy Alpha vs. Xperia Z3 Compact: Three kings

13 October 2014
We're looking for the best phone with a sub-5" screen. At a time when the best features seem to only come with the largest display, there's a strange, almost rebellious feel to it. No need to tell you, we're enjoying it. The Apple iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy Alpha and the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact are...

AnonD-115286, 13 Oct 2014Really struggle to choose between the Z3 compact n Galaxy A... moreThe absolute best of the bunch is also the least expensive of the bunch and it is the Z3 Compact.

Whilst Sony have engaged to the better in semantic compact same but smaller, it does put the S5 mini to shame who should have at least increases the camera to more than 8Mp which is the same size as the S4 Mini

The Galaxy Alpha imo wrong footed Apple partially, starting at 32Gb non expandable it is clearly better than the 16Gb (and 32Gb version Samsung I expect expected Apple to release Apple then opting for the 64Gb muted the 32Gb version
Samsung do not release non expandable phones. The 32 GB would have been more “sucessful2” with a 16, 32, & 64 GB iPhone, Samsung may have to add microSD if it want iPhone defectors to consider it

The iPhone6 (aka the iPhone 6 plus “compact” is last in the bunch, it simply is a larger display iPhone 5, anyone who started a 2 year contract in 2012 is using the same phone whose only new addition is the non-phone related Apple pay (which requires a credit card / NFC terminal to work) http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5685&idPhone2=6378

I read the iPhone 6 review on 26/09/2014 and made note of key point as well as commented

On Monday 06/10/2014 this was added

UPDATE: After resetting the iPhone 6 we decided to run a new call test and see what's what. The result turned out to be a better 12 and a half hours, besting the mediocre 8:11 hours and more in line with the 14h stated by Apple themselves.

There was a 15% increase from 1650mAh (IPhone5S) to 1810 mAh (iPhone 6), so whilst other sites also show marginal improvements in battery, the REMOVABLE battery Galaxy Alpha endurance is 52hours less than the iPhone 5S

The iPhone5S is 2 hours more than the alpha 54 hours and the original battery test to the iPhone 6 was 55 hours endurance so a mere 1 hour better… then the update

The updated test now has that at 61 hours endurance rating.

I can accept a slight improvement “tester error “ battery increase 15% to power a pixel number increase of 37.61% Now adding 7 hour or 13% when before was 1 hour or 0.85% and nobody else is showing even a fraction of the double digit.

Only altering the settings can result in such a change in results as not stated in the update is we got it dramatically wrong so 4 hours of extra call time right.

Somebody was not happy with the original unbiased battery test. and rather than thrash the original what would have “honest” is if Gsmarena added a note Apple yada, yada, yada using x,y,z protocols the 55 hour is to have settings set so direct comparison can be made

they should add Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini to the mix.
        :)

btw, since all of them are priced very similar to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (and pricier than Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo) here in my country, i'll pick none of them and choose the Galaxy Notes instead.

another options is last year's HTC One 802. they offer it with big price discount here.
and its specs is still relevant to be included in this comparison.

I really love the GSMArena comparisons. They're the most detailed and unbiased there is. Truly awesome comparison guys, just like always! Damn, you can always count on them doing a good job :)

Very impressed with all three devices. The iPhone is by far the best looking, in all aspects (design, screen, UI etc), in my opinion. Really great performance too, the best out there!

The Samsung is a solid device with Samsungs best build to date, and that camera, woah, I'm impressed!

And Sony, great job with the battery. We need more of this!

Three great devices, undeniably practically identically as good due to all having some aspects that stand out.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus, so I'm of course going to say that the iPhone is the best. Which it truly is at some aspects, but no one can overlook the greatness of the others. It all boils personal preference!

AnonD-115286, 13 Oct 2014Really struggle to choose between the Z3 compact n Galaxy A... moreI haven't read the review your talking about, but as a Z3 compact user, I can confirm that its WiFi signal is definitely not weak. It is better than my Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Tab (P1000) and on par or slightly better than my Dell N5110 laptop.

Z3 Compact seems like the phone for me. The screen lets it down a bit though.

Really struggle to choose between the Z3 compact n Galaxy Alpha, as they are almost same price in my country, so no price advantage to any of them.

Galaxy Alpha has a better screen, removable battery n a more user friendly camera (decent performance in auto mode) but no SD card slot and small battery life compare to Z3 compact. Btekt also found the speakers sound can be muted even in max volume if you cover it by ur thumb which is annoying.

Z3 Compact has IP68 protection, more compact size, excellent battery life n very good camera but only in manual mode, auto mode still bad and often overexpose the scene, protection cap is annoying, Notebookcheck also mention that the wifi n gps reception is only average.

So I will wait for Galaxy Alpha' review from Notebookcheck, if its wifi n GPS reception is also average, I may go for Z3 compact.

N about the iPhone 6, it is a good phone for sure, but simply not worth it with its insane high price, IMO

AnonD-223683, 13 Oct 2014My Xperia z3 compact all the way!! No, my Xperia Z3 Compact!

As for me (a sub-5" screen user)
2014 is a no go for me
Most of the companies was focusing one thing and forgetting that others and that's bad
My next smartphone will probably be the first 5" smartphone with the USB type C but i doubt that other OEMs beside Samsung will bring such thing
Although Samsung will mostly go bigger than 5.2" which is bad for me
