Motorola MOTOFONE F3 review: Budget wonder

25 March 2007
Motorola Fone F3 or Motofone is a unique mobile device. It unites the latest modern trends, on one hand, and a very basic functional menu, on the other.

Andrew, 20 Sep 2007Anyone knows how to design a speed dial key and eventually ... moreI know this is a reply to a very old post, but I just got this phone and figured out how to change your speed dial #'s relatively easily...

What you need to do is figure out which number is currently assigned to the speed dial # you want to set. This can be a pain if you have a ton of #'s, but it's still less work than re-entering your entire phone book in the order you want for the speed dial.

So say the phone automatically assigned your friend Mark to speed dial #2, but you want your Dad to be #2. Well, all you need to do is delete Mark's entry and then enter a NEW entry for your Dad. The phone will assign a new entry to the smallest available #, so your Dad would now be assigned the #2 spot. Pretty simple work around.

Just make sure you record the numbers you delete so you can re-enter them later.

Also, I found that the phone will allow duplicate entries, so in this example your Dad would be assigned #2 and ALSO whichever entry he was previously assigned. You'd have to carefully delete the duplicate that you didn't want.

Hope this helps someone in the future with this phone. You either love it or hate it. So far I love it, but I had the correct expectations going into it...very low and basic expectations that is :)

This is a great phone. I have "downgraded" from other phones with a ton of useless features and love having one that just does what I need it to. The alarm is good for when I'm away from home, its severely limited sms capability is fine if you can live without constant messaging and other than having to re-enter about 10 names that had multiple numbers on my sim card, I have no real complaints. True, the light isn't bright enough that you could use the phone as a flashlight in the dark, which means it's really nice to be able to use it in the dark without feeling like you're looking into a flashlight. The only thing I might want to change is the limited punctuation available, but since I rarely text, this really isn't a big deal. I love this phone and strongly recommend it to anyone who doesn't need all that extra junk that plagues all the others. Forget about the "For mobile beginners only" comment, if you're sick of years of using phones that try to be your phone, computer, camera, flashlight, mp3 player, radio, etc. all at the same time, this phone is perfect.

Does the phone uses voice alert for sms etc.? Can it be turned off?

I like the caption below one of the pictures, "The rear cover is rather boring." I would like to know which phone has an interesting rear cover.

just to add a few comments about this phone, i am fed up with people going on about how crap or the missing bells and whistles it has. Maybe if they read a little about the phone they would know exactly what they were getting!!. So please stop giving it bad remarks as if you don't like it's limited features then don't buy it!!!!.

A sizeable slice of the world's population lives on under $1 a day. The F3 is on sale in the UK for £10 ($20) including £5 of air-time - and that's close to the price it was INTENDED to sell for. Most purchasers don't WANT to pay an extra $10 for features they don't want or need - they'd rather be able to afford the food that $10 would buy for their families. Don't trash this phone just because YOUR Daddy can afford something better. You're not the only person in the world, nor does the world revolve around YOU.

Anyone knows how to design a speed dial key and eventually change from one to another? So far, in order to nominate lets say key No 2 for speed dial for a certain number, I had to erased the whole phone book and re-enter number in order I wish to have them available as speed dial. Crazy!

Great phone if you only want to make voice calls, as I do. Get rugged casing, highly visible screen, excellent keypad, speakerphone, intrusive alarm, relatively long battery life, and so few settings/options that there is almost nothing to play with. Ignore those who criticise this phone for being so basic - it is meant to be. My only disappointment is that this would be an exceptional phone if only Motorola had put a lot more thought into what such a basic phone should do best. If considering buying one then read the review as it touches on almost every advantage and disadvantage of this phone. Correctly says that it is initially easier to use if you've never had a cellphone before as it does not work like any other cellphone I've ever seen.

you know guys, like everyone has said this mobile is really great in performance. i bought this mobile for $37 and using it for my second emergency number. i always leave it in the car dash, believe me in this middle east with temperature soaring to 50 Deg C it is still surviving and i can really relay on it for SOS calls.

It's a great phone. I am not agree with the review, which is too severe. I compared it with a Moto KRZR K1 and F3 is better regarding reception, regarding screen (yes, except for sms of course) and egal regarding sound.
