BlackBerry Priv review: Privilege granted

09 December, 2015
A curved screen QWERTY slider by BlackBerry that runs Android, are we getting this right? We double checked and the Priv is just as exciting as it is unique. Honestly, it is one of those things many may’ve fantasized about but nobody actually believed would happen. It’s also probably the last chance for BlackBerry to try and turn things around.

[deleted post]Yeah except the s6 edge and z5 premium are both glass and metal builds while the priv is mostly plastic. When you compare them both the z5 premium and s6 edge offer a whole lot more for the price than the priv does.

I was really interested in this phone, but few things are really poor:

Keyboard: It seems nowhere near the BB keyboard experience. I mean its quite normal though, you can do magic when you are forced to cram up the keys in a small space, but BB could have worked something out. Keyboard would have been one of the main reason for this device to sell well, but if its not the same BB keyboard fell, then well....

OS Optimisation: This is another thing which shocked me. Yes yes, BB's first attempt to Android and all that, but how could a near stock Android be that laggy is beyond me! One Plus and those new companies have done it pretty well, so why can't BB? I was shocked when I was seeing some video reviews of the phone, it stuttered so poorly!

Camera: Well, whatever you say, people WILL expect one of the top notch cameras when they are paying flagship price, and to be quite honest those shots don't look like they can give any competition to S6, Note 5 or Z5!

Sorry BB, probably next time. Nice first attempt though.

Oh come on, Blackberry got to much "last chances".

[deleted post]Well by choosing the price-tag they did, Blackberry set the bar for expectations pretty high.

So flimsy backplate and wobbly display mechanism is not what we should expect.

We all knew the keys are tiny (Portrait and keyboard does not go well together except on even huger devices), and that there are quite a bit of firmware bugs in their initial Android attempt were expected too - though the worst hopefully will be fixed in updates soon.

The allegedly poor battery life, might very well be something that will be improved with less buggy and more optimized firm ware too.

But it would be wrong NOT to mention faults even if they are likely to be remedied.

          Thanks for the review.
The Priv seems to be a bit worse than I feared, I better hold my horses, at least for some major updates. ... But don't be surprised if can't and get so angry with my Iphone that I buy the Priv before the end of the year, despite its drawbacks, it is hard to imaging that it will not be an improvement.

I really like the analogies in this review... "Highly customizable car" ... "Overdue messiah" etc but does the phone really lives to the hype for the standard android user?

One of the worst phones in my life.. I just returned it.

GSMArena you really so slow, after over a month of its release, you still don't have the battery life test!
              Seriously?
The battery life of this phone was so bad... I was looking for for your test and conclusion.

Great design, great CPU and GPU, good main camera. Well, the best BB in years.
Much better than Lumia 950 which looks like entry level phone for 50 $
