Samsung Galaxy S7 vs. Apple iPhone 6s: Blind shootout revealed

21 March, 2016
Samsung went back to 12MP camera resolution with the Galaxy S7 for the purposes of great low-light imaging, but this means it's at equal megapixel count with the iPhone 6s, plus Apple does 2160p video too.

AnonD-20358, 27 Mar 2016Did you actually read what you wrote about the rant against... moreDon't compare samsung bloatware with Apple apps. There is not anything equivalent to apple's Keynote, Pages, Numbers or iMovie on Samsung's apps and very poor alternatives to google store. I have searched on my friend's s6 and we found very poor altervatives. Actually what ever alternatives on such type of productivity apps exist on google play they also exist on Apple store. Customisation is excellent on androids but not exclusive on s7. Cheaper ones can do that as well.

There are a whole lot of Samsung Galaxy exclusive apps, FYI. Also, there are a whole lot of people who will pay $800 only when they can customize the phone the way the want. Let everyone one know in what way iPhone is more productive or can do anything that a S7 or he'll S6 hell, a $250 Android phone can not do... And I will be game.

Samsung s7 is overpriced and bad value for your money. In my country it costs as much as an iPhone 6s. But whereas Apple offers a lot of apps for free and iPhone exclusive services the s7 gives you just bloatware and the usual Google package.

                          * Free apps by Apple: pages, keynote, numbers, iMovie etc. with those apps it is possible to create anything from brochures to presentations, editing movies, sounds, spreadsheets etc. Samsung gives you low quality apps and one needs to spend more money to get equivalent apps like those above, if there are any good equivalents. That's the number one reason for me to keep buying the iPhone because I need those apps for my work and I can't find any good alternative in android OS. (Don't mentione Microsoft apps because a) need paid subscription b) not so good as Apple apps c) you can get all Microsoft apps on the iPhone, too)
                          * Samsung relies fully on Google apps but those apps are not exclusive to s7. Every android phone have them. All Google apps exist on the iPhone, too. Moreover, the iPhone has its own equivalent to Google apps, that are only exclusive to the iPhone like Siri, maps, iCloud, Safari, that add more choice.
                          * The iOS gets timely updates for a number of years. Because it is little fragmented it is a lot easier for app developers to offer updates that kill bugs and optimize them. Samsung always struggles to keep up with updates and makes it hard for developers to push updates. Maybe that's the reason why the iPhone has better quality of apps.
                          * Despite all the efforts by Samsung the iOS still remains the smoothest OS.

If I can afford $800 for an s7 I think for all the reasons above I'll be better off with an iPhone that costs as much. If I can't afford it I'll be better off with a 300 dollar Chinese phone. I'll still be able to get the same OS, same Google package of apps, as many updates as s7 and I wouldn't complain as much if it lags because it's only $300. I would definitely feel stupid to spend $800 and not to get updates or lagging.

It's not a coincidence that the iPhone obliterates the competition at the top range part of the market. Lack of differentiation from the other mid range android phones make top end android phones feeling too banal and boring against the iPhone.

I've had a couple of days with the S7 Edge now

                            * I still hate the curved screen. It's distorts the image and I keep hitting 2 on the keyboard instead of 1, because 1 is in the curved part
                            * Low light photos are the best I've seen on a phone
                            * Daytime photos are the weak point for the S7. They are noticeably worse than those taken with the iPhone 6 or with the Note 5. The S7 oversaturates the colors a lot, overprocesses and clips the highlights.Daytime photos look good on the phone, but when shown on a 70" calibrated screen, the S7 seems more like a mid-range Chinese phone. The clipping is irreparable in Photoshop.

I really hope that Samsung fixes the overprocessing of daytime photos and addresses the poor dynamic range with a firmware update. For now, the low light capabilities are what will make me keep the S7 Edge, but I am definitely keeping an eye on the Huawei P9 and further down the line, the iPhone 7.

Nice try bit the fact still remains they could have easily kept larger pixels and already have more camera hump then they should.

Samsung could have also kept the resolution or used bigger pixels also

Apple didn't do it because they will use the same sensor with the bigger pixels size in the iphone 7 for sure and claim that they made something new in the camera department when iphone is behind the competition. That is how Apple plays with the isheep because they just care about the brand.
So you do your 1+1 and don't be blind by Apple.

Anonymous, 23 Mar 2016Imagine this. The Sony z series users larger sensors with m... moreBut apple uses good 6 Element lens optics that deliver nice images and aditionally they don't has as much of a wide field. Sony has a pour 6 element lens of which one is not really an element and with plastic elements included to srinc in size. That brings a lot of distortion and soft corners, the glass itself may be good but the arrangement is not. They act more like 4 elements. The wide angle of the setup brings the additional benefit of a physical shorter length and a physical smaller aperture. Plus, the whole device is a little thicker.
In the end you end up with a bigger sensor, no camera humb and heavily post processed pictures to compensate the bad optics. That said it's not a surprise that the iPhone often delivers the better results than a Sony z5.
And I would not call me a Apple fan, I'm using a Nexus 6p right now, before I had a galaxy s6 and before that I had a SONY xperia z3 (that showed similar problems than the better z5 because of similar reasons)
