Sony Xperia XZs review: Slow (e)motion

7 April 2017
Slap a new camera on the Xperia XZ, et voila - you have yourself a brand-new flagship. Is Sony taking advantage of a smartphone-induced decrease in human attention span? Or just doing what everyone else does?

[deleted post]You can actually, I have done it on the (XZ at least) Granted thats been indoors and not outside with wind interference, will have to try that.....but it can be done handheld in some circumstances.

        Still 1sec for shutter.

Though I do understand the at least some of the ongoing criticism of Sony's approach to mobile photography. Not sure how it is on the two newest high end devices, but on the XZ I have noticed annoying inconsistencies on bothe the auto and manual modes.

In manual (what Sony now likes to claim is a full manual mode) you get control over all the relevant settings, except ISO. This is still separated from the settings (like WB, SS, MF etc.) and is instead buried in the actual 'settings' menu. What's more, altering the ISO will cause the things like the SS setting to reset to auto. The reverse is also true, changing SS will always cause ISO to jump back to auto. The WB is also limited to just four presets, no Kelvin adjustment scale here.

Strangely in superior auto mode, you do get a more granular control of the colour temp, but along exposure control, you have to annoyingly enable these control options from the settings menu every time you fire up the camera app. There is no way to have them appear by default, at least not that I can find.

Again I can't speak for these two newest device as I haven't used them, I do see the usual suspects claiming victory already though. I think (at least up to the XZ) that Xperia's are not the top dog when it comes to point and shoot quality, the likes of the Pixel, S7, iPhone 7 are all just a step ahead in being able to reliably get a good result.

The likes of the XZ may be more competitive when applying manual control, as I have highlighted above however, there are weird inconsistencies in the camera app that are just not present in the competition, LG's take on a manual interface, walks all over Xperia's for instance.

These factors, when combined mean that even coming up on three months of use, I still can't quite get comfortable with the camera experience on my XZ, maybe improvements have been made in the latest devices, but until I see them I can understand where the criticism is coming from.

Its really classy, futuristic and simplistic design. I understand some people not liking it tho, its a matter of design taste.

Sony Ericsson made great phones with great designs in the past. I don't know what happened to those genius designers, probably sony fired them.

I take lowlight shots that way all the time. Dont need a tripod, just a second of steady hands.
Dont care for automode, always noisy photos no matter which phone, although is good for social sharing and stuff.

And just to clear up the quality issue...here is a sweet quote from that review (XZs low light) : "The samples are hardly the greatest around, with plenty of detail lost to heavy-handed noise reduction, which ironically isn't doing all that good of a job of masking the noise itself. Not it's not a terrible performance by any means, but it's one that's lagging behind the vast majority of competitors."
