Samsung Galaxy S8+ review: Infinity and beyond

18 April 2017
What was once an impossible fantasy - a sketch in someone’s book, a render of an ambitious concept - is now a reality. These are just some thoughts that come to mind holding the Galaxy S8+, the big and bold next step Samsung took.

Chill, 05 May 2017Its time to move on to another brand that offer price=SPEC ... moreThere is a difference between buying mostly top end good parts and selling at a decent price and developing in house the latest and must advanced parts and using just about all of it and then paying for the advertisement and R&D. And that's just specs. Not software or anything else.

SpiritWolf, 19 Apr 2017Lumia 950/950XL camera is better. Way oversharpened and col... moreI agree - I have a Lumia 950. Too much sharpening on the S8 apart from anything else. I admit to being a Windows fanboy (I had a Note 2 for a while and in true, it seems, Android fashion the phone slowed up noticeably over the three years I had it), but the 950 has quite a few plus points (leaving aside the wretched app thing the Windows detractors bang on about - get a life people, it's not as bad as all that regarding apps that matter).
I can admire the design of the S8 (although I'm not sure about the new screen ratio - too narrow), but most people are going to hide theirs in a case for protection. The 950 may not look special, but if you drop it, it's not nearly as likely to break. I remain to be convinced that you'll be able to drop an S8 and get away with it.
The 950 has a removable back, so when the battery gets tired, you replace the battery and not the whole phone.
The S8 screen is doubtless very good, but the Lumia's resolution is also excellent.
The 950 had iris recognition when it came out in 2015, likewise wireless charging and USB-C.
The headphone socket is in the wrong position on the S8; it should be on the top for when the phone is in your pocket.
The dual sim implementation is better in the 950 - you can have two sims and a micro sd card at the same time. This is one of the main things that put me off the S7 and now the S8.
Windows 10 on the 950 is now very slick and bug-free compared to when the 950 launched. Sadly, too many people have been swayed by the apps situation and seem to be incapable of seeing beyond appearances, which is great for the marketing boys...

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2017Well, not buying a spare or a bigger battery is a choice. B... moreActually in some settings mobile photography is not too far behind a good camera. A little too sharpened of course. I also have a 1020 that cab really take some great shots but the sensor needs replaced cause if the dying Audio focus.
I have a decent mirror less myself.
The S7 focuses faster, is more convenient in controls, much easier to squeeze dynamic range shots out of, and far superior in low light in most cases aside from a tripod and extra long shutter.
I can even get nice star photos with it. And sometimes a moon setting....though that one is a long way off because it's either just the moon or a very exposed moon in a scene.

It will be improved one day when I can get a better low light lense too add in. But the selection sucks. They are all either have a narrow fov, are other brands and don't even support auto focus, or one decent offering that is ridiculously priced over $1000.

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2017I know what you mean. I really miss those things. And I'm ... moreWell, not buying a spare or a bigger battery is a choice. But the point is that Note 4 *gives* you that choice, S7E doesn't and to me that's huge. Basically my phone is my everyday computer, even in particularly heavy days I want to be able to have it 24/7 on tap, which is exactly what you have if you carry a spare whilst having a 3rd one being charged on the cradle. At no time are you out of juice even if you try to. Note 4 IMO is the only 24/7 phone I ever owned, since autonomy is half the story of mobiles (the other halF is what you can do with them) Note 4 already won.

SPEN and IR are just the topping at that point.

By contrast being waterproof and the good cameras of S7E are toppings as well. I don't think highly of mobile photography (which is why I own a mirror less camera) so it's no surprise to me that Note 4 doesnt do too well, IMO S7E doesn't either, despite doing better, it's miles below a DSLR or a mirror less camera that I much prefer to have with me when on trips or with family. I would agree that camera would be a good reason to leave Note 4 behind but IMO we are not there, mobile cameras are still bad. Maybe in 5-10 years be convinced that there is a better phone out there if it *finally* let me leave my mirrorless at home. But we're not there yet.

So yes, I can see being waterproof and a better camera can make people switch but IMO they still lose far more important things for the time being (infinite autonomy if they want it, IR and S-Pen which are must tools in a pro environment). Also Note 4 is plenty fast you won't see much difference with S7E in real world performance, probably Note 4 is faster if you root in fact.

Droid, 28 Apr 2017Hoo stop kidding. Iphone reload apps frequently. When you c... moreThat's not reloading. Reloading means ... really that, loading assets back to memory, I have never seen it with iphone 7 plus. I *maaay* have seen it with games I opened a few weeks ago or something crazy like that, but in general, no, no loading screeps at all.

So it's true that you lose some time whilst watching the screen shot, but that's something Apple did to help smoother animations , you can disable animations if you wish and you *are* getting even better performance.

The actual app *is* loaded on memory indeed... it is definitely not just a screenshot waiting for the app to load (else you'd see loading screens, lose your last position on apps ... exactly as it happens in android, or even iphone when you load like 50 apps at once). It's the real deal...

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2017Battery wise it's not even in the same ball park. Note 4 is... moreI know what you mean. I really miss those things. And I'm actually very temporarily using an exynos note 4 along with my daily s7 edge.
I miss holding a note. Nice wide Flat display and spen.
And removable battery with ir blaster.
It's speaker was also beefier in some aspects.

However. I do treasure the water resistance.
And above all else the camera. The Note 4 camera is very nice....but cannot touch my s7 edge one in most respects. Maybe a very smidgen in daylight scenery maybe for the 4mp lead with maybe a tad less sharpening.

But contrast, dynic range, instant focus, microphone quality, manual controls, and dramatically in low light.

And if you don't have a spare battery on you the S7 edge definitely can last longer.
Though with the note 4 either version you can truly root it.
Root and rom support for my edge in us is horrible.

Aspros, 28 Apr 2017With all due respect to the Note 4, trully one of the best ... moreBattery wise it's not even in the same ball park. Note 4 is/was one of the few 3000+ phones with removable battery ever released.

Basically it means that you double the capacity by carrying a spare.
Or if you don't want to, having the capacity to use high quality aftermarket batteries (5000-10000 mah)
Also 60 seconds charge time (charge a spare whilst using the phone).

It's basically why Samsung phones lost big part of the pro crowd (lost the removable batt).

One handed use is more determined by screen size. Their screens are both phablet sized so none really allow one handed use only in limited manner. Having said that Note 4 does have the one handed mode if you really want it (s7 edge doesn't IIRC). So Note 4 wins in that too.

S7E being waterproof and tiny bit speedier are both things I've referred to so you added nothing there.

BTW being waterproof doesn't much affect the longevity of the phone unless you live in a dusty and/or extremely rainy place as the sealed battery would degrade (on S7E) long before internal components would be damaged by the lack of IP rating on note 4. It's the no1 consumable on phones and Samsung seals it for a reason...

Also S7E lacks IR (very important to the pro crowd) and an SPen (again).

All in all, a serious downgrade for the vast majority of people.

An Android with an SD card avoids this problem with better design.

So in the end the CPU speed comparison tests with a pristine phone mean nothing in the real world.

The with is very important not to go beyond 7.5cms, because if it does, the phone cannot be operated with one hand anymore. Smaller bezels, yet bigger battery capacity is also another win that affects day to day use. water proofness also affects everyone, because it shields the phone from dust and air moisture, that are responsible for the inevitable damages that appear in most phones, like the digitizer. better ram and cpu really shows as we move on
