Moto Z2 Play preview: Sharp and ready

16 June 2017
The Moto Z2 Play is the successor to last year's Moto Z Play, the phone that won praises from critics and was quite possibly the highlight of Motorola's lineup last year. Like the last phone, the new one focuses on providing good performance and great battery life without blowing a hole in your wallet.

AnonD-80459, 03 Oct 2017If you care so much for updates why didn't you get the X Play? G... morewell, if a company won't update their phones that's just fine. but you can't run around and tell the world that you will provide updates and then you won't.

this is not just unethical - its a scam! motorola was scamming their customers as i bet they knew what they were doing. what i want in such a case is a full refund or the update. but try this. so all i can do is to stop buying their products, tell my family to stop to buy motorola and tell the world how i got scammed buy motorola.

and samsung is not doing this kind of scam. so i have nothing to complain here. neither a samsung customer can complain as they know what they get in return for their money.

i bought the moto g turbo which has the same hardware as the x play JUST because they said that the phone would get the update. that official statement of an upcoming update by motorola was the single key feature that made me buy the phone.

AnonD-642976, 24 Jun 2017yeah, the 2015 x play had the same hardware as the moto g3 turbo... moreIf you care so much for updates why didn't you get the X Play? G series are low end budget smartphones and they won't get more than 1 major software update. It makes sense, it costs them a lot of money to mantain older devices. Motorola in Google's era wasn't getting money. They lost a lot of money too. It makes more sense to only give one major update per cheap smartphone. Samsung doesn't update their cheap devices either. The worst thing is Samsung phones tend to come out with a dated Android version from the start.
I've had Motorola for years and they are the only brand who haven't let me down on software, performance and built quality.

Motorola is an excellent brand damaged by a poor customer service. I wont buy another one due to my poor experience....

AnonD-527131, 19 Jun 2017how is the mi6 s display under sunlight?cheers,mate-well,mi6 it's a LCD screen, not (AMO)LED,so inferior in that department..But,excellent one,I have to say.Had a bit of problem taking a photo during day, display isn't exactly bright enough to play with menus, sun does make some problems there, but nothing to worry, create a shade with your other hand.I got used to it:)

the moto g3 and the moto g3 turbo were marketing scams. the turbo version was listet on the nougat list for months. i bought it just because it was on the list. and a few days later they told the world, that the g3 and g3 turbo are not able to run nougat. o yeah? really? so why does the x play runs nougat if it's the same hardware.

seriously. i was a blind fan boy. but the motorola i knew is dead. today its just another brand with a terrible marketing, lies and zero consideration for their customers.

btw, my first mobile phone was the motorola StarTAC. so i know what i am talking about. after almost 20 years of motorola they are just dead to me.

Not ok to expencive , to mutch bezels !!! bad camera .

There are definitely better phones for the money but before everyone starts talking about the OnePlus 3T being so much better or as good as other Flagship phones on the market there's a huge HUGE problem with OnePlus devices - and it's their customer service. Their customer service absolutely positively SUCKS. With Motorola, I call them up, they send me a phone (if there's anything wrong with mine) and I send them back my old one in the box it came in. No questions asked. With OnePlus, even if you manage to get someone on the line you have to wait weeks for them to "fix" whatever's going on with your phone before they send you another. Plus there are little things that are usually not tested for in these reviews. For example, I have a 2016 VW Passat that I pair my OnePlus X with...my brother's wife has a OPX as does my best friend (I got it for him), whenever they pair their phones to their car's bluetooth, including my own, we all notice gaps in BT connectivity, breaks in music streaming and phone calls if anyone touches the phone or its near anything metal in the car. Other phones have no issue. WiFi connectivity is really, really piss poor in my OnePlus X when it comes to range, other phones have no difficulty staying connected to routers in other rooms but my OnePlus X is always the first to drop. I love that my phone was cheap but you're definitely getting what you pay for. Getting the Moto G5 Plus when it goes down in price a bit.

It´s still one of the best phones around. If you´re no gamer and you do a normal usage it´s a great phone! good batery life, pure android experience.

I wonder why the bezels on XZ Premium didn't count as disadvantage.

  • harwey

I have huge respect for Lenovo as a brand, but this device for 500$?For what it offers,350$ is top,at least for the badge.Oneplus 3T,not to mention my new Mi6 are way better phones for even less money..

I'd go for the Moto G series phone(s) instead.

Otherwise, I'll wait for that Moto E4 Plus with a whopping 5K mAh battery.

The battery will last you around 1.5 days with moderate - heavy use (just like Moto G5 Plus). I'm currently a proud owner of the Z Play wich runs 10x better and faster than any Samsung phone on the market now. It recieved official Android 7.1.1 Nougat and that made it as fast as a Galaxy S8 wich has a way superior processor (tested it opening apps and games) and raped the LG G6. Even the 2016 will get Android O, Moto X Play 2015 is getting now Android 7.1.1 wich a Shameshung Galaxy S6 won't get until October probably. Z2 Play is guaranteed to get Android P at least. Since it's also slimmer than the Z Play, it makes more sense to comfortably use any Moto Mod with it, specially that awesome turbo power 3500 power pack, you can get almost a week of battery life with the phone's battery and that mod connected. So stop hating on Motorola and Lenovo, they are doing way better than Apple and Samsung can dream.

$500 for mid range phone. I hope there are enough sane people not to buy this phone. Camera is horrible for something in the range of 500.
