Still rock solid in late 2022.5 years already in my hands and still running smoothly. Does what it supppsed to do, and still does it quite well given it's age.
Too bad that 5 inch displays aren't a thing anymore...

Bought it when the global version launched and it's still working very well, even the battery is in good condition. The snapdragon in this one is pretty bad but the display, camera and sound are all still decent compared to modern low end phones.
I will try flashing a custom rom on it soon and see if I can get it more up to date.

I am going to miss it, especially it's size which is almost perfect. I wish manufacturers would make more smartphones of smaller sizes like this one, with more efficient SoC and much better display size ratio nowadays it's certainly more feasible. Unfortunately they're selling and cramming more features which most of us don't need. I agree that affordable phones these days are pretty unwieldy, but what can you do with limited budget.
I'll just keep this one as project phone, who knows maybe it can be revived someday.

I absolutely agree with the last comments. I have my Redmi 4X for 3.5 years, the best phone I've ever had. I've been thinking about getting a new one since Xiaomi does not update this phone anymore, it's on MIUI 11 with Android 7, while newer phones work on Android 11 or 12. Some apps I used, don't work anymore and it will happen more often. Unfortunately, there no newer compact phones with all the features of this one, even the infrared. Except for some iPhones, extremely expensive, all the good phones with Android are like bricks. Those things are not phones, they have zero portability. Why the 6-6.5 inches phones became the new standard??? It's ridiculous.

The 4X continues to impress - 3 years after buying. I use the dual sim (one for work and one for personal) - and have used it extensively every day. Really - for what I paid - I could not be happier. Since buying, I've looked many times at newer smartphones - but always struggle to find anything better. The 5 inch screen, weight, battery and performance, are all perfect for me. (If I want a camera, I'll buy a camera). At last we're seeing some smaller phones coming through - like the i-phone 12 mini. Xiaomi - make one like that but with your sensible pricing!

Its been 3.4 years still perfectly working, we ll not find compact phones in midrange this one was good one. Replaced 2 time display it was my fault. After 2 years i came to know it can be fast charged. It take 1.3 hour for full charge that can easily last for 1.25 day for normal us.
Looking for compact phones in 5 inch display with modern specs....

Been using this for 3 years, no problem faced till now. I am a heavy user and installed more than 130 apps from the time I bought this phone. It has become somewhat slower now but in no way it is unusable. Yes, battery backup is reduced due to my heavy usage. I cracked its screen once and got it replaced for around INR 2000. I am buying new phone (X2 PRO) and giving it for replacement for around 2600 INR. Feeling very bad that flipkart assumes its price is only around 2600. It has been a nice buddy... made a connection with it in these 3 years. I hope my next phone will be same as this one.

Best in class...
Though, no problem in 2 years... when tried for minor service , cost was too high...
Only drawback is high service charges...

Third year with this phone and still ticks like clockwork. In this era of bezel-less phones, I actually love the bezels and the navigation buttons on the Redmi 4 providing a full-screen experience. There are only two negatives in this phone
1) The battery takes forever to charge. But I'd rather have a slow-charging battery that maintains longevity than complicated quick-charging mechanisms. A full charge from 0 to 100 takes just under 4 hours. And from 20%, it takes just above an hour to get to 70%. However, I never charge it to 100%. Even with 70% charge, the thing lasts a day and a half. I reckon, the slow charging and very infrequent charge cycles is what is keeping the battery going even after three years. I have had to change the screen once, though, because of a yellow patch growing in the corner in year 2.
2) While the camera is pretty decent, it never captures the colours of a sunrise or sunset accurately. It manages well in other scenarios, though.
Waiting for a successor. I know Xiaomi is at the anvil of releasing a Redmi 9, but everything after the 4 has been large, unergonomic and ugly. I wish they'd come out with a modern SD 4xx processor, USB C and a side FPS and retain the same chassis, screen, camera as the Redmi 4. Or even a 5.6 inch 18:9 version if they have to. Hate the over-blown aesthetics of modern phones with glossy glass/plastic bodies, notched screens and an array of pointless multi-lens cameras that don't even sit flush with the back.
