Xiaomi Redmi 4 review: Blue-plate special

05 July 2017
There's affordable, there's dirt cheap and then there's the Xiaomi Redmi lineup. The latest to come out of Xiaomi's bargain bin is the Redmi 4, or what’s known in China as the Redmi 4X - just Xiaomi’s naming scheme. The important thing is that it's running an international ROM right out of the box, complete with full support for Google services.

My friend has been using it for 3 months, Nougat was already updated since May 2017. So this review is out of date. 2 big issue with this phone is the no fast charging which will not help during low battery situations, another is the sync seems to goes off whenever screen is turned off, no matter what settings we changed at battery and application. Otherwise it is a solid phone and at less than RM650 in Malaysia, it is a bargain.

My mom been using this 4x for a couple of months, and it's really an awesome phone. The performance is on par for almost any aspect compared to my 2013 flagship Mi3, except the battery is better on 4x. CAF on video recording is really impressive, response time is fast and focuses are spot on.

True value for money and no brand to beat this phone in this price segment. A only challenger to this brand is by itself
It's my honest comments as using this phone for almost a month (3GB/32GB variant)

something is not right with battery endurance of redmi 4x
Redmi 3 got 107h in the gsmarena test and 4x got only 80h

I got both phones and confirm that standby/inactive battery discharge of redmi 4x is visibly worse - although it is using newer more power-efficient chipset

I blame new android version and MIUI - they have lot of useless background activity that consumes battery.
My Redmi 3 pro battery stays almost flat when phone is inactive, with my usage (4G on, 2-3h web/mail/calendar a day, whatsapp running in the background) I charge battery every 3-4 days.
Redmi 4x with exactly the same setup and usage had to be charged every 2 days ...

possibly power consumption could be reduced by deep-tweaking of the OS or installing custom build w/o crapware or even LineageOS. not many people have time and skills for that though..

Most of the people, that made reviews of the Redmi 4x praised the battery life and optimisation with over 15 hours SoT, probably GSMArena just got some crappy review unit.

Redmi series is the best budget series on the market - period. While everyone can make a shitty budget phone, Redmis are actually pretty capable in all areas, actually too capable for the price. Usuable phones that don't break the bank.
The Samsungs, Sonys, HTC's and LG's of this world can not charge 300-400€ for midrangers anymore, they have to step up the game, better the performance and lower the price. And that's Xiaomi to thank i guess.

GSMArena staff: I agree with the conclusion you guys made regarding Redmi 4a vs Redmi 4.

Its clearly better to go for Redmi 4's junior model instead of Redmi 4a. The audio and photo quality of this phone has impressed me...

It has a 720p screen and 4100 mAh battery. Yet it's battery endurance of 80 hours shows a very poor use of it's resources. And it's not just the standby scores, even the individual scores aren't all that impressive considering the specs.

Beta rom on 7.1 is already out

Xiaomi phones note 1, redmi 2, all sucks. Its wifi feature was dead before the EOL of the phones and thus cannot connect to wifi, so not able to access internet. So I planned to apply a hammer onto the screens and dump them into the bin. full stop.

I have owned and used both the Galaxy S7 Edge (rated 92 hours in battery-test) and Xiaomi Mi Max (rated 108 hours), and my current phone Xiaomi Redmi 4X (a stopgap-solution until Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 arrives). As far as batterylife goes; the Redmi 4X is even better then Mi Max, and definitely better then Galaxy S7 Edge. This is my personal impression based on experience - although subjective. I get about 9-10,5 hours of SOT (Screen On Time) within one single charge-cycle - with about 10-15% left to go.

I always trusted GSMArenas battery-tests, but this time? No. Something must be wrong with either that particular phone, or that particular testing-procedure.
