Sony Xperia XZ1 hands-on review: First impressions

31 August 2017
There's a new top Sony dog in town and its name is the Xperia XZ1. So, it's official: Sony is persisting with its, let's say, questionable naming convention. To be fair, we do see the consistency in it all, but it is still a rather silly title. Plus, we do have to complain about some aspect of the XZ1, since, frankly, after spending a bit of time with it, our initial impressions are really positive.

But I believe there's a scope for both to improve, so all that depends on what manufacturer of the phone sides with. Can't change their minds by showing the other side of coin. They are bound by market. If market wants OLED, then even if IPS is better, manufacturers won't choose it. So the entire pro and cons comparison is essentially useless since ppl buy what they like. Believe it or not market likes OLED these days

My post was just a reply to some guy numbering flaws of ips lcd and praising current oled screens, which are unfortunately full of shortcomings and flaws, so I just numbered those out.

But of course, there are guys saying I'm making it all up, whilst that one talking about flaws of ips lcd is, of course, for them true to the point...
          What a debate ha?

Whilst both have their advantages and cons, have not yet seen a single professional factual compare of amoled on s8/note8 and ips lcd on xz premium.
If you are reffering to displaymate conclusion, look here:

            http://www.displaymate.com/mobile.html

Where is Sonys 4k hdr screen test or compare to proclaimed best screen?
Its a seriously unserious site if it doesnt even test the best advanced ips lcd mobile screen, but keeps awarding amoled against....amoled and apples lcd only.

That site can by factual merrits only conclude notes8 is the best amoled screen, but certainly not the best mobile screen, as it doesnt even test jdi's or LG's screens to compare them.

What kind of serious reference is then to be drawn from their tests?
And review sites keep sharing their articles, but never question this serious flaw in professionalism.

Market dictates industry (except apple, but that's different thing entirely and even they listen a bit these days) market wants OLED and even if I couldn't care about display type on my phone as long as it fulfills couple of criterias, OLED is the future. Can't survive without a quality display on product. Also display isn't the only thing that makes a phone worth a purchase. I guess you know that, don't you? Afterall that stuff is for TV's and Sony makes them the best

tan you're overreaching man. the s8 and note 8 have the best displays atm. the only advantage of IPS lcd is taht uses less energy than Samsungs OLED or maybe its because due to sony's better optimizaiton.

otherwise sony still needs to do better with display

To a developer though, looking to build future services around mobile based 3D scanning, this is going to prove a decent preview of a feature.

Considering the XZ1 (like most smartphones) is going to be market relevant for not more than 2 years at most, then it's unlikely to see much active use of this particular model.

I always make it clear that the views I express are my just opinion, you pass yours off as irrefutable fact, that's 'in my opinion' a sure sign of arrogance.

But it matters not, your views are very much the minority where things like bezel-less designs, dual cameras etc are concert, cause whilst your yawning with boredom, the companies implementing such features are making a ton a money.

You'll warm to such features yourself once Sony adopt them no doubt........

In Tann's case, what ever Sony are not doing is 'boring', whatever is doing innovative and exciting etc.

That's just his simple 'objectivity' at play again.

Myself, I think this 3d modelling thing is creative and forward thinking, but is unlikely to see much use over the lifetime of this particular device. I also have my usual list of concerns where camera utilisation is involved.
