Razer Phone hands-on review

01 November 2017
It's official - computer hardware company Razer is stepping into the smartphone market with the Razer Phone. We were invited to attend the announcement event and, the way these things work, we got to spend a few precious moments with one of the Razer Phones.

About point 2, you can change resolution in settings anyways for better performance. Also you can overclock the chipset too if gaming at 1080 60fps is not enough

"Razer seemingly didn't get the memo about flagships going all bezelless this year"

GSMArena seemingly didn't get the memo about customers not wanting useless gimmicks this year!

Razer completely missed the ball on this one.

First when playing games you wouldn't want to annoy your surroundings so a headphone jack is an ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE!!!

Second they have this phone that has a 120Hz display (thus technically capable of displaying 120frames/second) yet this phone can in the worst case scenario (GFX 3.1 Manhattan benchmark on this page) do no more than 22 frames per second. On average you can expect about 40fps with this ridiculous QHD resolution. For a truly silky smooth gaming experience with high framerates they should have gone with a FHD screen instead. In fact even the Oneplus 5 can't even reach 60fps in GFX 3.1 Manhattan. Obviously I've quoted the onscreen benchmark because that's the ONLY one that actually matters.

Third, as a gaming company the first and primary option to distinguish themselves from the others would be the inclusion of a BT or wired game-controller in the box. Together with at least one AA-game title to show off the device prowess.

This is in my eyes a complete failure for a supposed "game oriented" company. Even I would have done it better.

          eww.. nova launcher, ..

Now if only camera had decent 120fps results. Also considering phone, 1000fps would feel more natural for phone. S9, XZ1P,(maybe even G7) are sure to have it.

Alex, 02 Nov 2017Someone also said that the human eye can see only 300 ppi, ... moreCertain young people can see up to 1000 PPI, 320 PPI is considered ideal from 25 centimeter viewing distance while 500 PPI is from 15. Same o goes for refresh rate; split 120 in half to remove interlocking/tearing and you are there at 60Hz.

My xperia xz premium scores 179883 with antutu, 1936 with geekbench single core and 6538 on multi core. So I'm wandering what's the real scores for the rest of the phones??? Some one should do his job better!

Damn what is so good about this, is that u don't have to root your smartphone to change clock speeds and refresh rate too, that is a plus for the RAZER smartphone, they are literally sort of implementing some parts of RAZER CORTEX and NVIDIA's G-SYNC. But camera as expected, for a brand that makes beastly gaming laptops exp RAZER Blade Stealth, camera is going to be the one part they aren't going to focus that much on. Just slam some Hammerhead, Kraken or, ManO'War and u are good to go, well, sadly with an adapter, but the audio quality is gonna still be good, thanks to the freaking THX certified that they also have in their laptops, dope, if only the person doesn't care much about the design, of course

                      outdated and boring

Nice phone, build looks solid, good they included nova prime (best launcher ever) but they shouldve made games to use this phone fully anyways pricing is good too and for people saying screen should be fhd you can downscale resolution and refresh rate to save battery

AnonD-393912, 02 Nov 2017You just confirmed his point. 120hz screen refresh rate in... moreThis phone seemingly has Adaptive Sync incorporated. This is important to take into account. Why? Because it means the screen will refresh at the frame rate that is requested. Watching a 24Hz movie means a 24Hz refresh. Gaming with fluctuating fps? Means the screen will continuously adapt, up to 120Hz. That's a very nice feat for games that run fps around 70-90, but it also is nice for those games that tend to drop below 60 regularly, since with adaptive sync, you will have none of the tearing you otherwise have.

This is a great "first" phone. The feature set is very consumer friendly (except 3.5 jack), if razer can put a down scaled mode to 1080p I can imagine most all games running at higher than 60fps frame rates consistently. The build is right up my alley, but most impressive is the fact they include nova launcher prime. Something that small like including nova as the default launcher is the OEM keeping an ear to niche, there is a reason nova has over 50 million downloads and many prominent youtubers pointing out when they would use it on a new device.

Orsted, 02 Nov 2017The human eye can only read 60fps...Someone also said that the human eye can see only 300 ppi, and that 400 and 500 ppi is stupid, while they were making phones with 300 ppi screens.
Now they are making 400 and 500 ppi phones. Did the human eye evolved?

A nice looking phone. It seems inspired by Xperia design.
Bezels are there especially for gaming practicality arena...

Hmmm, but they shold ve kept the fHD lcd screen with 120 hz....it would be better for gaming performance, as it is seen by its results in gpu benchmarks....

Anyways....I like this ones setup most besides Sonys devices.
                                  Good one

p.s. Yeah. I know. there were phones with 10,000 mAh batteries or so. I did not mean this is the largest battery operatable in a phone. just how silly the thinking would be. maintaining the same. (assumingly 88h or so.) battery life with TWO chipsets.
