Our editors talk: Best phones, worst phones 2017

27 December 2017
As 2017 draws to a close, we take a look back at the phones, which impressed us, and the ones which disappointed us. This end-of-year edition of our Editors Talk series will give you a glimpse at the love-and-hate relationship we have with smartphones and their design and features.

I really hope to see more of compact smartphones with flagship specs in 2018 and by compact I mean the screen must be below 5". As someone with little hands, I really appreciate company that do so. So far there's only Apple and Sony that release compact smartphones with flagship spec. And I'm really hope to see OnePlus release flagship devices in compact size. I'm really into OnePlus 5 and 5T unfortunately I couldn't get one cause of the size is too large to fit in my little hands :(

What would I want for 2018? Surely not hardware features, I couldn't care less about bezels etc. What I would like to see is better android software, more control to the user, e.g. app level control of access to private data, such as phone numbers, accounts, control of app internet access etc. Privacy by default and not features like 'wifi evaluation service' or what it is called in android 8, which does not even pretend to provide any benefit to the user, but simply works for Google's benefit only. Also, better usability and less design flare in apps, e.g. when searching for restaurants in Google maps I want to be able to see a list or a map on the entire display, rather than seeing half the map and one single randomly choosen restaurant on the other half. I want less guessing on what I may want, just let me do it, to remain with this example, if I want to select another restaurant next to the one randomly chosen let me do it, do not think I want route planning to that randomly chosen one. Working basic services, e.g. xperia xz premium is unwilling to do data roaming within Europe (a European model of course) in the year when EU data roaming charges are abolished (but does 240fps slow motion video for some 1.5 seconds or so, really great!). Frankly, I would like to see a new European OS that ideally can be installed on existing devices; this is where some EU spending should go.

Hardware wise, bigger batteries of course, and bigger camera sensors, like 2/3 or 1/1 inch. F2.8 is sufficient. Better than the utter nonsense of laser autofocus (on a max. 2.3 but rather 2.6-2.9 sensor, where everything is in focus beyond around 10cms irrespective of where you focus???), color sensors, dual cameras and so on (do you see any of this on any serious $$$ to $$$$$ cameras? what do you think why not?)

I got dissapointed after reading some of the reviews. How come you say on the intro that you are a "newbie" in the mobile sphere. The 3rd one was somehow confused on the Note or the Pixel, kinda. I appreciate if you can take an online course for Composition so next year we can get a better reading experience. Dont get me wrong, this is my favorite mobile page.

His views in general would go against those of most GSMArena readers.

Apple is alone with this feature and the iPhone X is probably the best phone available currently.

Fingerprint reader on the back of a phone is a copout and lame. I don't want to pick up my phone every time I want to check my email or messages. I expect most flagships to move to proper face recognition within the next year or so.

Android's voice recognition has taken a turn for the worse this year, failing to recognize voice input on every Android in our office about 20% of the time and song recognition fails about 70% of the time.

                                      -phones that cost 1000$
-face unlock and gestures that makes things complicated and wierd
-99% screen to body ratio and not have a place where to put your finger
-super mega procesors that can open your instagram 0.0001 faster then a midranger that work ok for 99% of people....but hey someone needs to spend that money on something
-fragile phones with glass...even if it is gorila 100000...glass is glass

                                        Dear Angie..

HDR is available for videos, it has been years. At least provided by Sony. Can't say about other brands because I do not own any phone.

It is available for HD and Full HD 30fps.

If any has HDR for 4K, they have to stop using limits for how long you can record.

S8, OP5 and u11 cant pass 10 min. One of these 3 can only 5 minutes.
