Google Pixel 2 XL long-term review

03 January 2018
This long-term review is going to take a deeper dive into what it’s like to actually live with the Pixel 2 XL, as the main and only phone, for a few weeks (three, to be precise). We’ll try to answer the questions you might have about the device, regarding things that aren’t covered in our proper review. For example, can you actually get used to that screen? Learn to enjoy it even? Is the Pixel 2 XL a huge improvement over its predecessor? Does it really take such amazing pictures? (OK, so you probably know the answer to the last one). We’ll also cover how easy it is to set up and let you know about any niggles and issues we’ve encountered in day to day use. Let’s jump in and find out if the Pixel 2 XL really is worth your hard earned cash.

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2018Display issues blown out of proportion by internet?? really... moreYou must be a Samsung Fanboy.

The screen is easily 90% as good as the one on note 8 or iphone X.

Qualibration is very good.
brightness and contrast as well.
its better than any LCD and better than 2016 samsung oled.

A phone is not only the screen but also the rest of its hardware and software.

Samsung quality check is horrible.

AnonD-26314, 04 Jan 2018Not true for the WiFi networks, I transferred via USB c fro... moreHumm they where clearly talking about switching to an older PIXEL device to the new pixel 2 and 2 xl.

    read plz before ranting..

That display is pathetic, get over it. In comparison with iPhone X especially, and when paying premium price display quality should be premium as well.

Though still the best software experience around and along with best camera, that's the reason I am keeping my Marlin for another year.

      LoL

I also prefer the long-term review over the normal review. When it comes to normal reviews I usually only read the intro page and conclusion page, because the conclusion and intro pages summarize the main points made in all the in-between pages. The long term at least gives the extra info of how the device fares in the practical realm, and has links to the in-depth info. I read many gsmarena reviews, so I got tired of reading the same similar in-depth in-between pages again and again, better to just have links to those pages.

          Screen isn't that bad.
          Price $899.

I can't imagine how on earth I could pay $899 for Pixel 2 XL and tolerate bad screen (and other issues) , even if it's not as bad as many say. Asking this price ,asking premium for phone, the company should deliver a complete, faultless product.

            sachi, 04 Jan 2018Pixel 2 vs Iphone 8: Pixel 2: 1. Display not the best 2.... more1. iPhone 8 has LCD.
            2. You either have have to use dongle or buy an lightning headphone which isn't compatible to your laptop, tablet , iPod, your friend's Android smartphone etc. It's Funny how you lscking 3.5mm jack is Pixel's conm but iPhone's pro.
            3. Software update, which slows down a phone? Yeah, sure, I will take it.

Go for Galaxy S8/S8+. You don't have better phone right now.

p.s Not a Samsung fan (used to be nokia one).

sachi, 04 Jan 2018Pixel 2 vs Iphone 8: Pixel 2: 1. Display not the best 2.... moreI used to be happy with iPhone for four years but once get my hand on the latest Android flagship I can't go back to iOS.
Android spoiled me, it's more snappier and a lot more versatile.
It does what I want smartphone to do while iOS doesn't.

sachi, 04 Jan 2018Pixel 2 vs Iphone 8: Pixel 2: 1. Display not the best 2.... moreBecause Apple does not give you any freedom with their device and you objectively don't recieve the best display and subjectvely don't have the "attractive UI". Android is still the king of customisation and uniqueness.

In the end you choose whatever you want but you still can't say the iPhone is the better phone because of those features you've mentioned. If I go the same route as you I can say that using an iPhone is like living in a dictatorship. You don't get to say nothing, you don't get to have opnions or wishes, you interact wiht what they want only. You do what they say you can do. So sad.

It's a shame that phone that expensive, and made by Google which is creator of android sucks that much. Really nasty screen issues, no headphone jack or SD slot, ultimativley bad audio on headphones, buggy software, no wireles charging and finally the looks of the phone is so immensely ugly that it makes your eyes water. It has got a good camera, but everything else pretty much sucks.

Please, please, pleeeeease continue writing reviews like this one. I loved the way you guys aproached the device and how the topics were evaluated. That was exactly what I was searching for moths now, the correct way to write a long-term review. I thank you so much for this, you have no idea how much that review made me happy ; )

For now, I just wish you post more long-term reviews like that, I'm especially eager to hear about the Galaxy S8 now that it has been almost a year since it's launch.

Again, thank you and keep up with the good work. Peace.

sachi, 04 Jan 2018Pixel 2 vs Iphone 8: Pixel 2: 1. Display not the best 2.... moreExactly. Go for iPhone!

Two of the main things that are keeping me away from Pixel 2 XL are:
                        -Price
                        -No manual camera

Though, the price can be dealt with, with a little savings here and there, the camera doesn't have manual (pro) features that I would basically be using most of the time. One can argue that I could simply just get a DSLR or any other camera, but how could I possibly fit that in my pocket when I'm on the go and literally trying to capture moments?

Unfortunately, 3rd party apps are not the best optimised applications - not the most popular and recommended ones for sure. The best camera app will always be the one a manufacturer provides - so it's the most optimised one - unfortunately my experience with 3rd parties have been rather bad so far on any high-end devices.

The headphone jack doesn't really bother me, I agree with Apple removing it and supporting Bluetooth and other wireless technologies to take place of the jack. Dongle life will likely only exist for a couple of years (just as is with USB-C only devices like laptops etc) - and many years for those who have a professional, high-end headphones.

                          Pixel 2 vs Iphone 8:
                          Pixel 2:
                          1. Display not the best
                          2. Audio is crippled : No headphone jack, buggy bluetooth.
                          3. Only 3 years of software update.
                          4. Bland boring unattractive UI.

                          Iphone 8:
                          1. Display is the best.
                          2. Bluetooth works best. Audio via lightning jack is good.
                          3. 5 years software update
                          4. Attractive UI.

Why should one go for pixel 2 ?

The bad low-rated screen killed Pixel 2 XL. "Show real color" what Google was thinking? The small-minded manager who decided to use the cheap display to get fired.

I have had two of these so far and am surprised that you have not mentioned the numerous occasions when the usb c dongle refuses to work with any headphones..this is now acknowledged on the official Pixel Users forums...in many ways the phone is good..but to remove a headphone jack and then replace it with a dongle solution that does not work on many phones is frankly amateurish and piss poor. Also its not an unerstatement to say that reading a web page with a mainly white background..ie 90%!!! ot them including GSM Arena the blue shift is very distracting as it happens with the slightest shift in the back and forth axis and it gives the impression that it is flicker as it changes that easily...be fair to your readers and dont underplay the screen issues...its a #900 pound flagship competing against the best..if any other manufacturer ...especially apple...released a phone with a screen this bad it would result in an outcry and a class action ...in my local carphone warehouse..you can look at every screen from all manufacturers and apart from the LGv30 and the Pixel XL2 none of them have this obvious flaw...i repeat SIMPLY NOT ACCEPTABLE..recall them and replace the screen with a Samsung....for all our sakes..

Somehow, I think the Pixel XL 2 will not age well (especially its screen)

Very ugly lines from year of 2005! The pixel's designers did extremely bad job. The suckers need to be fired. Good hardware can't save this crap-style.
