Sony Xperia XA2 review

26 January 2018
Sony may be looking beyond smartphones but the Xperia line is still standing its ground. The recently unveiled Xperia XA2 series is not only a statement of persistence, but also shows intent for expansion. And the Xperia XA2 bodes well for Sony's new generation of smartphones this season.

Camera is worse than the one used in xperia xa1. How come it is possible, Sony?

The design is okay, typical Sony. I'm glad they stuck with 16:9 screen, honestly think 18:9 is unnecessary. Edge to edge screen is more than enough even with top and bottom bezels.

Improvements they should have added are ip68 rating and snapdragon 660 at least for the Ultra if this is marketed as a super midrange.

I'm surprised the camera is better even having the same sensor as the XA1. It may have something to do with better SoC or improvements in jpeg post processing.

Camera output got better colors in stills and a bit sharper, 4K is better than nothing... But, digital noise preserve, videos looks as gone through vintage filter, camera is basically killed in low light. Some details still missing - nothing new for sony image processing, though I would want to see them getting better, also are they actually not able to see that digital noise? Kind of sour taste with flagship coming soon. For such awesome sensor, it didn't get enough love from sony.

[deleted post]It has been in phones like Xperia S or even Sony Ericsson. Not sure why a "swollen battery"is mentioned all of a sudden.

Wonder why they not allow raw shots and more than 1sec exposure. Even just 4 seconds would be a lot better.

So they got rid of stereo speakers, they got read of fingerprint sensor (Sor of) and even copied Xiaomi with low quality sound from headphone jack (Althought i've never seen such a poor result even in Xiaomi phones) and in video recording...

What's next? Oh yea, no 3.5mm jack and the stupid 18:9.

Why Sony, why, the sound quality of the camera is like Xiaomi? A very good phone with useless camera clips with such a awful sound quality.

With fingerprint scanner on the back XA2 has lost Sony uniqueness and looks like just another Chinese phone. For me this is the most reason not to buy it. This is a thick phone and there was more than enough space to implement fingerprint on the side and it's very unclear to me why Sony decided to put it on back which is less convenient as well as seriously affects design of the device making it just another noname Chinese phone.

"The Sony Xperia XA2 did poorly when hooked up to an active external amplifier, having very distorted output and low volume. Frequency response and intermodulation distortion were way off the mark, suggesting some sort of issue the phone had in this case."

So if I was to buy a Sony for some weird reason, I couldn't really use my portable headphone amp/DAC with this one. Horrible.

shame that audio still doesn't seem to be a strong point in Sony smartphones... but this one does support aptX HD (in addition to their proprietary LDAC, i think?) and it's relatively affordable, so it should be a good option for wireless listening
