Sony Xperia XA2 review

26 January 2018
Sony may be looking beyond smartphones but the Xperia line is still standing its ground. The recently unveiled Xperia XA2 series is not only a statement of persistence, but also shows intent for expansion. And the Xperia XA2 bodes well for Sony's new generation of smartphones this season.

samsung have unlimited budget to do r&d. it's easy for them to change their design and add new features as much as they want.

sony's mobile department is not like that. sony can't afford to follow samsung's way

My Xperia Z2 has been dropped many times fling many times on floor and road for over 3 years usage although get scratch it's still works fast, that's why I believe Sony quality, I still wash it with mild soap and tap water. It is very sturdy. Samsung lost my respect, the quality cannot be trusted.

Tann Hauser, 29 Jan 2018That true. Its like that on every Sony article, since ever... moreUh... Newsflash, you are always doing exactly that. Every single time you post. How come you can't see that?! Also it's very funny when you try to explain why a fault in a Sony doesn't matter (like the audio quality on this one), while normal people won't fool themselves like that. If a phone has a fault or an issue, it doesn't go away magically like that just because it's made by the only brand you seem to acknowledge.

About 4K video, Z2 came before S5. And Z2 was not the first to record 4K.

First phone with front camera was a Sony Ericson.

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2018So, the XZ Premium is very gimmick to you Lets tell you... more-And the s4 could use both cameras Bennie that so Sony copied.
-Neither full hd recording nor display was first brought by xperia. And z was 2012 and z1 was 2013.
-Samsung brought first camera phone. And was the first in most updstes from there on out until 12mp. As we as first hd recording and first hd playback. First in 4k and and phase detection and dual pixel focus too.

I know sony did awesone things too but there is no need for that kind of reply from people like you except superiority. And for whatever reason my comment will upset you and half the sony people on here.

S9 may have 480fps Full HD
Apple is spending money on Argumented Reality.

The ability to use both cameras same time is available since Z1/Z2. Copied by LG , then HMD .

Background Defocus has been on Sony phones for years, copied by Apple.

Dont forget that Full HD brought by Sony on Z got many critics back in 2013, same for Z5 Premium.

First phone with front camera was a Sony Ericson.

First phone with nfc was Sony Ericson.

                                First IP68 was Z3

                                First capless usb was Z3+/M4

AnonD-733945, 29 Jan 2018This Sony Xperia XA2 is a MID-RANGED smartphone.. Why peopl... moreThat's a statement about Sony's product design. Many people have a hard time distinguishing Xperia midrange and highend phones. I've seen many of them being convinced XA1 Ultra is their flagship due to size and no side bezels compared to XZ or XZ1 whenever there was a Sony stand present. Usually everyone is attracted to Chrome XZ Premium right away due to mirror finish and large screen but when it comes to other models they are puzzled what is what.

Sony is not cost cutting when it comes to exterior design and fit and finish no matter what market they want a phone to be present in.

If Sony can listen to what people want for an instant it'll be great. Samsung was dying with the S5 and the Note4, but gave people what they want (not 100%) with the S6 and they had a great success since then. From what I heared from my friends and family about Sony's smartphones has always been the same. They all say that they don't like the old design. They all don't like the camera. The ones who are kind of into tech want OLED and they don't mind it even with it's current problems.

This may sound irrelevant to you, but these are regular consumers, and regular consumers are the ones that make 99% of the market.

So I will say my opinion on what Sony should do to make a hit in their next smartphone. First of all, a design change. Three main things to do: 1) Make it sleek. 2) Slim bezels (81%+ screen to body ratio) 3) Make it unique. Yes, Xperias are guaranteed to make a hit in the market again if they come with these three things. Oh, please don't make it thinner than 8mm. Too thin also means too annoying to handle. Another thing is to keep the jack and the stereo speakers.

Second, the camera. Sony Xperia's sensors are excellent (IMX400 is an absolute monster), but it's ruind by too much megapixels, no OIS, and Sony's horrible post processing. If they can make a 12MP version (2+ microns will be the size of the pixels) of it and add OIS, they'll have a much better low light performance, and a much better daylight shots. When it comes to post processing, I believe that the Pixel 2 and the iPhone X are kings in this department. Close to real life colors, not too much exposure, and just a tiny bit of sharpening. Oh, in low light, we don't need a freakin unusable 12000 ISO, this all can be solved with OIS. When it comes to video, just add OIS and a natural look with manual controls and you get an excellent package.

Now let's talk about screens, OLED is the way to go now. Yes, it has a lot of problems, but it also an incredible amount of contrast and true blacks. Especially now since Apple is also going that way, consumers are prefering it to LCD. Sony done a wonderful job with their OLED TVs such as the A7, but it's time for it to be in mobiles.

Lastly, the software. I'm not talking about updates, they absolutely nailed it last year. I'm talking about the visuals. The design is really old. My suggestion is to give it a full stock Android look. Especially the launcher. Also, the camera app needs a lot of work. Making it easier to navigate would be much appreciated. And, delete everything, but please keep the Walkman app, it's wonderful. Maybe the album app too.

And that sums up everything I want to see in the next Sony flagship.

This Sony Xperia XA2 is a MID-RANGED smartphone.. Why people keep comparing it with other company's flagship? Honestly this is a great smartphone with longer battery life, improved camera quality, better display and faster processor compared to previous XA1 series.. It focused on the consumer's daily needed feature..
