Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact hands-on review

26 February 2018
Unlike many of its big-brand competitors, Sony didn't shy away from major announcements at MWC 2018. In fact, it took the wrappers of a shiny new pair of flagships, that boldly marry new design concepts with incremental hardware updates.

AnonD-481725, 28 Feb 2018Oooooh tATy, where is the 10 min slow motion in the Samsung... moreall of them are useless gimmicks.
but samsung's implementation is more mature than sony's.

sony is the king of immature unstable halfbaked useless gimmicks.
sony tries to copy samsung by giving its users more gimmicks, but sadly sony cannot implement it properly.
    sony lacks software skill

Anonymous, 01 Mar 2018Glad to hear that you enjoy my honest comments. But, you s... moreHeadphone jack, they are probably influenced by Apple. Copying smaller bezels? The first smartphone that started the bezeless trend is the XIAOMI MI MIX, so are u trying to say that SAMSUNG has copied XIAOMI because they have smaller bezels too? U trying to say that everyone currently in the bezeless trend are copycats of XIAOMI including SAMSUNG? Fingerprint sensor on the back is copied? Do I have to relate that to SAMSUNG and the other brand manufacturers who put their fingerprint sensor behind as copy? Rounded corners, copied too? Really? The only shape for smartphones is a slab of rectangle, so the only way to change it to other types of design is to refine that shape of rectangle, so is seeing rounded cornered smartphones a copy? Then could u please give new design ideas to the brand manufacturers since u try to ex-smart? Yes their smartphones are somewhat thicker now (I also don't know why they made it thicker) but are u VERY SURE that they have smaller batteries? Smaller batteries to what? Isn't this a slight improvement for the capacity compared to it's predecessor? Smaller batteries? U kidding me? Ok but the design I have to agree with u, it looks like some HTC smartphone, kind of weird. Lastly, u call Sony for still having the "useless" shutter button. Useless? How is it useless? Pardon to explain further? Isn't it functional in some situations? Even if u don't use it, it is a button to stay, u trying to say that DSLR camera's shutter button is useless? I don't care if the display is touchscreen, that shutter button can still be useful at times when u are one handed and have a hard time reaching the camera icon to take photos. One question: Why is it all on Sony? Why isn't it other brands too? Are u trolling here or u are just a hater here that's why u blame Sony is a copycat all-rounder?

Now that is gone (13.5cm is not small), why wouldn't one go for a full size instead? Like the Nokia 8 Sirocco: for just 5mm taller, you get a much bigger screen (5.5 vs 5.0), with much more usable real estate too since it's 16:9.

                  Dear Phone manufacturer
please stop this stupid ugly reetarded gimmick trend:
                  1) Less Bezell (yes that's the correct word, not bezel less because it still have bezell)
                  2) Removing head phone jack (why the f don't u give us dual USB/lightning Port??)
                  3) Removing external storage (so that we have to pay more for more storage right??)
                  4) Adding Notch (copy-paste another phone ugly design is stupid & not creative, just stay with your own design FFS!!)

                  thank you,

960fps video is still a gimmick. IMO. Its just a sales gimmick, like so many other options on new Flagship phones. All I said, is that Samsung does 960fps better than Sony.

Also Samsung started fps video recording on phones before Sony. So, Sony has copied Samsung (as usual). Samsung has been upgrading its fps video recording for 9 years years now.

Sony has copied Apple with NO headphone jack on its new models.
Sony has copied smaller bezels. (although still too big)
Sony has copied FP button on back
Sony has copied 18:9 screen ratio
                    Sony has copied rounded corners
Sony has thicker phones now with smaller batterys
Sony now has ugly pregnant soap bar design
Sony still has useless shutter button

Awesome review, I am so looking forward to this phone in compact size. I’ve owned an Xperia Z3 and Z5 and this is the upgrade I’ve been waiting for since the XZ Premium didn’t have a compact size.

I so wish these would work on Verizon.

I know, CDMA is outdated, but in rural areas, Verizon is only option sometimes.

Just wish they had a better phone selection. So tired of the Apple/Samsung duopoly for flagship class phones with Verizon.

This would be an OK release if I hadn't researched the XZ1 last fall. I almost bought one then and waited to see what Sony would do with the rumored XZ2. Now, I'm super disappointed that they A) removed the headphone jack, and with it the noise cancelling that Sony had (no batteries for noise cancelling is an extremely useful benefit); and B) moved the fingerprint sensor to the back. Lame. So relieved that the stereo speakers are still there, but the removal of the headphone jack is a trend that I'm not OK with. I'll be waiting for this release only to get an XZ1 at a discount.
