Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact hands-on review

Unlike many of its big-brand competitors, Sony didn't shy away from major announcements at MWC 2018. In fact, it took the wrappers of a shiny new pair of flagships, that boldly marry new design concepts with incremental hardware updates.

Sony has a gimmick 960fps video only with manual button use, NOT Automatic. Only works for 0.2 of one second and then shuts down. Meaning that most times you will MISS the shot.

Samsung has AUTOMATIC and Manual modes for 960fps videos. Meaning that you WILL get the shot most times. Is that clarification enough for you ? Samsung has lowered the time between those captures down to 2 seconds. Between those timeouts the camera continues to shoot at 30fps. That's the first improvement.

Yes, that’s right, Samsung does it automatically, meaning Most times you will get the shot. You can also export the slow-motion parts as gifs, right there from the preview.
An easy edit over the captured clip. After you are done shooting, you get a very intuitive preview with all the slow-motion moments clearly visible and easily editable.

Samsung Galaxy S9 has a 12MP sensor with telephoto lens, and with variable aperture - f/1.5-2.4. The sensor is optically stabilized, as usual, and supports dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus and OIS. Supports image stacking with new noise-reduction procedure with 4-frame stacking. Also supports the new HEVC format.

And Samsung started using fps videos in 2009 with I8910 Omnia HD, so its been upgrading over the years. And can easily do 10 mins fps video recording at a lower frame rate.

      I wish sony had kept those speaker grills symmetrical, headphone jack and 16:9 but the y dongle makes me feel less bothered about the jack but unfortunately other two cannot be helped though i still prefer this over the others

                Huawei p10 is similarly sized, MI6 too. Consumer demand is what is needed for making compact phones. It's pretty less these days I guess..

                          Disappointed. The compact line keep getting being bigger and bigger, and heavier too, to the point it's not a compact anymore. And no, just being slightly shorter than phablet does not make it a compact!

                          For comparison, the sony ericson ray was 111mm tall and 100g! A delight. The Z1 Compact was 127mm/137g, and now this one is almost 1 cm taller and heavier than some full blown phablet!

                          Sony missed the opportunity to shrink the size of the phone by removing the bezel, but instead felt compelled to copy-cat the 18:9 form factor, which doesn't bring much value, if any.

                                I simply want a dedicated headphone interface, be it usb or 3.5 mm. I aint buyimg a phone without that.

                                Only way I might consider is IF they put a bluetooth headset inside the box, although I really dont prefer wireless bt headsets, constant charging needs and pricing for those is just annoying mess definitely not worth it.
                                Those are expensive and I am not ready to cash out for XZ2 and also another minimum 200 euro plus for headphones.
                                But they wont do that.
                                So count me out.

                                I would like all these innovations of XZ2 in my next smartphone of course, but headphone interface is priority in my book, over any other ( like hdr upscale, hdr video rec, DVS, 3D creator, super slo mo, etc..).

                                  While the extra thickness may be better to hold in the hand it certainly won't be good for pockets..why do Sony have to get it so wrong.. And keeping the headphone Jack would have certainly attracted some customers away from the big phones but it seems Samsung are the last big company to keep it.. Good luck using XZ2 on a flat surface.

                                        The deep green and black color very beautiful, front and back gorilla glass 5 is amazing, I would like to say it is definitely difference to XZ1 XZP
