Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact hands-on review

26 February 2018
Unlike many of its big-brand competitors, Sony didn't shy away from major announcements at MWC 2018. In fact, it took the wrappers of a shiny new pair of flagships, that boldly marry new design concepts with incremental hardware updates.

AnonD-258449, 27 Feb 2018Don't lie, I have a XZ, and it works great. And I did actually notice the speaker volume increased. I'm on the 1st update after the main Oreo update.
My battery just got impressive also(it was messed up by the main oreo update till I got a later update).

That guy is trying to sell what he doesn't have. My XZ is just too good to me(saving for XZ2, disappointed at 3.5 jack & FPS relocation but damn I'm saving for it).

Anonymous, 27 Feb 2018It's about performance and ergonomics for human hand use. G... moreThe more videos I watch of the XZ2 from various tech sites (Recombu, MrMobile etc.), the more I get what Sony is going after and I'm warming up to it. (and I really appreciate GSMArena showing the XZ1 in a lot of the shots for comparison!)

I also understand that as an XZ1 owner, the previous model, this really -isn't- for me in the standard upgrade cycle, thus their use of the same IMX400 camera module.

Still, at 199g this thing is dang heavy for what it is and I wish they had just used polycarbonate for the back instead of glass. And the removing of the headphone jack in this industry continues to be ridiculous.

Anonymous, 27 Feb 2018xperia lost its identity with a curved design on the back. ... moreGo back a few years to the Xperia ZR, they've tried a variation on this curved back style before:

Very disappointed. Weird asymmetric design, thick and heavy, even the battery is smaller than in almost 4 years old Xperia Z2. Will stick with Z2 for a while. Still not worth to upgrade.

Reaper , 27 Feb 2018First 960 fps FHD, First 4k HDR shooting cemera, Firs... moreYup, great feats, put all other to shame. Video seems to be Sonys excelling point.
And DVS is a great add on innovation.
Photo is now different algorithms, only phone with qualcomm ones, remains to be seen...

            Except lack of headphone jack.
Im not willing to compromise on that.
            Aint even gonna consider it.

Hands-on but no camera samples for us to laugh at? XD

Anonymous, 27 Feb 2018I can't even download apps from playstore on sony flagship ... moreThat's a minor Google play apps bug.if you do a simple search you'd get many guide on fixing it.and it's not Sony's fault.its Google plays.it can happen on any phone belonging to any manufacturer.(unless it doesn't have Google apps in the first place😁..)

stele, 27 Feb 2018This! Totally agree with you and with many other commenters... moreI hear ya! I am tempted to go XZ1c but I think I'll go ahead and try the XA2 just for a change. I've been thinking about doing a bigger screen, but still want a smaller handset, and have been qaiting a long time for Sony to shrink those top and bottom bezels. It's much more bearable now in the XA2, plus it's got the best sreen-to-body ratio that any new Sony phone out there has to offer. Ya it's got a curve, but it's not so pronounced, and I'm planning in getting it in all black so it won't be so noticeable (plus I'm going to try another first and go with a roxfit folding-type case, so the curve will be a total non-issue). But I'm definitely not getting the XZ2 or XZ2c. Good luck to all in the exploration of the new.

[deleted post]So they were wrong in their concept because it is clear that the majority of users and potential customers are giving a negative response. With a little luck they will see their error and research a new concept or maybe they have to wait for the disaster in sales and economic results to rethink the future.

Trump Fan 1980, 27 Feb 2018 If Sony is the Mercedes of electronics, then what is Vertu... moreI don't know. I do know that Lamborghinis aren't so accessible or useful in the real world where most people live. Same goes for Vertu. Does Vertu even come close to competing with Sony in the electronics Industry? Pretty much speaks for itself. Sony failed here by not staying try to themselves. I find that to be true from time to time about Mercedes, and about everyone actually. But still a solid company, I hope and think they will do better. They just aren't so interested in the phone market for some reason right now...too bad for all of us who really like their clean, minimalist, understated approach, software and hardware wise. I was worried when they ended their partnership with Ericsson. They've done in since though. I see this as a temporary setback.

Shame there is not even 1 still camera sample to droll over.

Can't believe everyone is spazzing out about how bad this phone is! I've been using Sony's compact phones for the last 5 years or so and this year I was given a galaxy s8. What an over rated pile of crap! I can't wait to sell it to get the xz2 compact as I will never change away from Sony again. Under the hood the compact version seems very powerful and up there with the others if not better. I personally think 5 inches for a compact phone is the sweet spot as 4,6 &4,7 are a tad bit too small. The only one thing I'm not too keen on is the thickness of the phone with the additional curved back.but I'll have my final judgement on that once I've had a hands on experience. Overall i think sony will contiue to be my go-to mobile choice.
