Samsung Galaxy S9 review

09 March 2018
It's true what they say - you don't fix what's not broken. And that's what Samsung did for the Galaxy S9 - it didn't change what was already great, it just tweaked specs wherever possible. And it has worked out just fine for them.

Gsmarena writes about the camera:
"But then there is also the shallow depth of field, which can lead to corner softness and overall softer images with less intricate detail."
Sorry, but this is not true. It's softer at f/1.5, yes, but this has nothing to do with depth of field. It just means that Samsung wasn't able to make the lens perform well at f/1.5. That's not unusual for camera lenses. For example you can buy an f/1.4 lens that is very bad until you stop down to f/2.8. Therefore I think that Samsung's decision is not very useful at all. A sharp f/1.7 lens is better than a soft f/1.5 lens. Furthermore the 28% light advantage of f/1.5 over f/1.7 isn't much. A significant improvement is 100% or 200%. Most photographers wouldn't really care whether it's f/1.7 or f/1.5. On the other hand f/2.4 captures 50% less light than f/1.7. So you capture less light whenever the phone chooses f/2.4, in this case you either get a slower shutter speed or more noise.

The most mediocre flagship device released by samsung ever. The lack of enthusiasm in all the reviewers about this phone is so apparent. Battery life of S9 is utterly pathetic. I know some die hard Samsung boys complained about Phonearean's low battery rating about S9, I wonder what they will say now that gsmarena also rated it lower than S8.

Xiaomi has taken over samsung in India. Nokia is back with some really strong phone. Is this the beginning of End of Samsung dominance in Android market? I sure hope so.

AnonD-3124, 10 Mar 2018S8/S8+ are still good choices, S9/Note8 for better choices,... moreNope S7E is the best.

Apart from the camera in everything else is the best.

Far better battery endurance than this one
        Front facing fingerprint sensor
        4gb of ram still
Similar performance if you buy the Exynos version.
16:9 screen meaning much better support in most apps.
        Almost indistinguishable screen quality.

In other words people are once again duped with S9
Thankfully S8 sold abysmally, the worst than any S phone (only 38 mil)
Sadly Samsung and her fans learnt nothing. They created the same phones and some fans still find it praiseworthy.

Samsung increasingly becomes like HTC/Sony. Stuck in her ways, offering nothing new or important , yet having hardcore fans praising it through it all.

Another such release (like this one) and Samsung becomes part of my "hitlist" (companies I want removed from the mobile market for the sake of us all), along with Sony, HTC and Blackberry (Fake Nokia is close in entering, but I'll give it another year or so, but they don't seem to learn either).

Panino Manino, 10 Mar 2018"1) the XZ2 has much better quality than the S9 in the low ... moreI just used the tool to compare S9, XZ2 and XZ1..

Even with higher ISO ( 90 x 50) the samples of XZ2 are better.
Scale all them to 12MP ( easier to compare) then you choose the Spongebob.. XZ2 does a bit better.

Now check the dollar bill... The logo on left side near de 11...
            Even XZ1 can outperform S9.

I compared all flagships of 2017, only Note 8 comes closer to XZ1.
I dont know why haters hate...

Anonymous, 10 Mar 2018there is something odd with the studio picture tests: 1)... more"1) the XZ2 has much better quality than the S9 in the low light scene."
This XZ2 impressed me a bit by Sony standards, but it's better only in some ways, because of more pixels and almost double the exposure time. Look at all that noise especially at the corners.

"3) the s9 is worse than the s8 in the low light scene"
Software still not perfect, look at the shutter times. The exposure time is too short.

Miss the old dumb phone day, when we got different design every year.

Wait... With newest chipset that was supposed to be so much more energy efficient, battery endurance fell behind previous galaxy? I'm still not convinced... Will have to stick to my S7 for a while or go Huawei this year

there is something odd with the studio picture tests:

                      1) the XZ2 has much better quality than the S9 in the low light scene.
                      2) the XZ2 is only marginally worse in the good light scene - there's more noise on the XZ2 there but sharpness is slightly better (and probably not due to algorithm but better lens or something like that)
                      3) the s9 is worse than the s8 in the low light scene (this does not 100% surprise me as other reviews DID point that out as well!)

are the tests correctly labelled? is the XZ2 just much better?! what is going on?!

So a whole year and all they could do was buy camera from sony?

I don't want any i.d.i.o.t telling me how they implemented it better than sony. That auto slo-mo stunt has to be the lamest gimmick ever. It's more accurate if they called it "random slo-mo", because that's what it actually is.

"Don't believe Samsung's marketing guys, it's just a gimmick, the different apertures have no difference at all, I swear!"

I can't believe Samsung would release a flagship with worse battery life than last year. Huge disappointment in this area. And in general, the lack of actual new features in S9 vs S8 is incredible for such a big company. What did they do for a whole year ? Figured out how to move the fingerprint sensor ? I can't see any reason for buying the S9 vs the (much cheaper) S8.

Great upgrade for those who have a s7, s6 or the + versions, I think that s8 owners should wait for the next iteration, I have a note 8, I will wait for note 10
