This Guy just go for walk in not so good weather and evening and takes simple and normal shots - this is real test.
Peoples make amazing "sunny" shots and comparing them, is not the point, the point is take normal or hard circumstances pictures and show them.

Both devices takes similar photos, one time is better S9 and one time XZ2, theres no so much differences between them but its Samsung who put "all money" to new (reimagined) camera marketing, so... I waited many years form S7 to see and buy something fresh, after S8 and now S8 I say pass to Sami. And take XZ2 at least they try to do something new (like with design) and with a "half" or less marketing they bring similar product to rivals. And still, better performance, updates, system optimalisation than Sami. And one more thing? What do U get (bonus) when U preordered S9? And what bonus gives Sony for preordered XZ2? U got now many pros to choice Sony not Sami this year.

Pretty useless shootout if in conclusion you cannot even name the winner - c'mon man-up and decide for f*** sake. And I appreciate and seen shootouts where the samples were it was literally hard to tell from the samples which device is better - not this time around though. It is enough of that political correctness and being afraid to "hurt" Sony fans again - I don't know what you are talking about but in any comparison Samsung samples are miles ahead to the level where it is almost non-comparable. I do understand that on screen and without zoom it is hard to tell the difference, but when zoomed it it is obvious that Samsung has much cleaner pictures, better in both good and low light, better in HDR, better on video. If you own samples is anything to go by Samsung wins hands down. You might pick on over-saturated screen - that is fine, but pictures are clearly superior quality.

lek, 04 Apr 2018so you need to read the conclusion again carefully.
Sony's... morePlus any of use with a brain can see they were just trying to be impartial.
If you're going to set the phone down or use a tripod anyway you can just as easily switch to manual and adjust iso and shutter on the s9. And even control aperture. So in most cases will still be superior in the galaxy.
And we can see that the shots have too much noise in the Xperia in comparison where the s9 broke the cycle and went for less sharpening with more natural detail compared to others.
Noise is not as bad as people claim yes. Especially if it's not too much and reserves fine detail. But if there is too much and it's only worse because of sharpening... It's not really better.
Though yes Sony did finally improve.
Sony has so much potential its just pathetic how they let themselves barely float along. They could attempt to take the mobile market by storm with ease... But instead we get underpowered devices with bad camera software and random dead devices as a wide spread manufacturer detect.

Nick, 04 Apr 2018I'm pretty sure Sony removed the option for 8MP downsamplin... moreSamsung can't capture slow mo at at 1080p at 960flps. And most others can't do 960fps. Does that mean that such a feature shouldn't be mentioned at all??

Tann Hauser, 04 Apr 2018So much circumstantial subjective speculation around a simp... moreCalling the omission of basic features for high-end smartphone camera such as bright lens and OIS "different approach" sounds like another excuse to me...
I never said it is going to affect the sale of DSLR, but compact cameras will certainly take a hit. Their entry compact digital cameras all have pretty horrible JPEG processing and right now the only advantages they hold against the camera inside XZ2 is zoom and OIS. But if they put OIS onto their flagship phones, what would you expect to happen? Well, there would be less reason to buy Sony's compact over Xperia for the camera. In fact many of their cheap compacts have 1/2.3 inch sensor, which is exactly the same size as the one on XZ2. And because zoom lens narrows down the aperture quite dramatically, in terms of low-light performance they wouldn't stand a chance against modern flagship smartphones. Faster lens(let's say F1.7 or 1.8) will widen the gap even further for the night time photography. Highend compact like RX100 series wouldn't be affected as much though, because its pure image quality is still vastly superior to any smartphone in the market right now and its target customer segment is completely different from those buying smartphones. You can say exactly the same for Xperia and Walkman, by the way.

Nick, 04 Apr 2018That's most likely because the camera on XZ2 doesn't turn d... moreIt’s not business all the time.
Sony doesn’t include OIS because there’s no way to fully disable it in times that it’s not supposed to work. For photos, it will do wonders, but is horrible for videos.
You see, the S9 is still kind of wobbly when recording 4K videos, whereas the XZ2 is only less stable but no distortion. They won’t include one until there’s finally a solution to disable it completely for smartphones.
As for aperture, f/2.0 is a nice balance for daylight and low light pictures. Go lower and your images will be softer in daylight, especially in the corners. Go higher and your images will look unusaable in low light.
But one thing I like about the S9 is the variable aperture, so I believe that Sony may use it too in the future. But then people would say Sony is copying Samsung, while completely ignoring the fact that Samsung took inspiration from Sony for the slow motion 960fps @720p for the S9 and S9+.

lek, 04 Apr 2018but Sony's noise is terrible, way too much. aggresive sharp... moreYou’re the only one saying it’s oversharpened when it’s clearly not.
The XZ2’s low light pictures are often just as sharp as its daylight pictures, while the S9 has dropped its quality quite significantly due to more aggressive noise reduction.
If there’s one that’s more natural, it’s the Sony. Noise aren’t supposed to be reduced by a huge margin, except when it’s overly too much that ruins the quality of the photo (in this case, doesn’t). Even DSLRs take pictures with noise despite the better details, so less or no noise doesn’t always make an image better, and it applies to the S9.

Nick, 04 Apr 2018That's most likely because the camera on XZ2 doesn't turn d... moreSo much circumstantial subjective speculation around a simple fact that Sony just has a different approach than all the rest to mobile camera photography and video, and does it also extremely well, and innovates with new features in the process.
Increase in mobile sales would in no way affect their camera buissness, as those are just simply different markets, and people buying DSLRs just want more quality than smartphone cameras, but of course are also buying and using smartphones.
