Both have pros and cons, but props to Sony for defying expectation without following the trend. If they can do this good without OIS and dual camera, then you can bet they will do better in the future. Sony will always be a unique and practical company.

Nick, 03 Apr 2018When you go darker, S9 will have an edge due to:
-Wider ap... moreWhether it makes sense or not is irrelevant. The images speak for themselves.
If you're not holding the phone steady, the S9 will produce a better shot at night.
If you steady your arms (you don't have to have a tripod, it's possible to get the symbol up just bracing your arms on your ribs) or place the Sony on a surface, it CLEARLY produces better results.
It also, arguably, produces the better daytime shots and better video, making it the better camera overall.

Shootergod, 03 Apr 2018Both in day and night shot, GS9's noise handling superb for... moreThe problem being that it clearly - especially at night - removes fine details that the Sony captures. As with last year's tests, look at the shutters in GSMs standardised shots: the S9 simply gets the pattern WRONG. Whereas the Sony captures it correctly.
I will always, always, always trade a little noise for a more accurate image.

Happy to see a Sony Flagship challenging a Samsung flagship to this extent.
Hopefully Sony will be way ahead against Samsung in few years.
I agree Samsung has better specification on paper compared to Sony, however in real life usage, Sony will definitely have the upper hand.
Things Sony should improve are,
1. OIS
2. Dual camera (Hopefully the next flagship will get it as marketed in MWC).
3. Bigger pixel size (1.5 similar to Huawei P20, which has the same size sensor)
4. Better screen to body ratio
5. Better slim, non generic design
6. 3.5mm audio jack
7. Better flash, at least few LEDs with dual tone or xenon at the max (I know xenon won't happen)
8. Better selfie camera, need not to be as of XZ1, at least 8 MP with auto-focus & OIS?

Wow. Look at all the fanboys going about "oooh OIS is sh*t for videos, and you can't disable it when needed, ooooh Sony is the king, oooh in yo face Sh*tsung oooh". Do these companies pay you to rally behind them like this? I'm not against only Sony fanboys, I'm against all faboys out there. Just get a life. As a long time Sony user, I've made my decision quite a while ago: I'll never ever buy an Xperia without proper low light HANDHELD performance. Be it OIS, or their new experimental high ISO dual sensor I don't care. I want it sorted before I will pay actual money to get another Sony. I do not like Samsung too at this point. 12MP feels so low res after using 23MP Z5C for a long time. Just give me an 18-19MP 4:3 (min 16MP 16:9) sensor with 1.22-1.25um pixel pitch, f/1.8 aperture (not a variable one, not necessary, the widest aperture I want in a smartphone is f/1.8), proper "handheld photo" stabilization and thus actual good handheld low light performance, and I'll pay for it.

Nick, 03 Apr 2018Let me correct your comment:
1. XZ2 doesn't have a better ... moreThe battery life of the XZ2 IS better according to ALL tests. I don't know what you read. Also the fact that Samsung achieves same long term battery life results as Sony's Battery Care is your own pure speculation.
The update policy of Sony speaks for itself. The XZ1 was the fist Oreo phone, the XZ P received Oreo six months before the Samsung S8. There was also a report that Sony are the most reliable and bug-free devices. My XZ Premium is certainly totally bug-free. Being also close to stock means coherence: With a Samsung phone, you have two different OS designs in one device. One when you are in Samsung apps and one when you open a Google app. This looks cheap.
The colour inaccuracy of Sony displays is another myth: I calibrated the screen of my XZ Premium to match the screen of my Surface tablet (which according to tests, is the most colour accurate screen on the market) and the results are identical. According to test the XZ2 has even less of the old coldness of Sony screens, so bringing it to perfect white balance should be no problem. It's just that some websites like Phonearena don't bother playing with the White Balance settings of Sony, which they do for Samsung.
The cameras ARE on the same level, or isn't it the same article were commenting to?
Looks like you're only right about the loss of digital noise cancellation, which disappeared from the phone specs. Sony really wants to promote their wireless digital noise cancelling earphones, which is disappointing. However Samsung still has never had a competing solution to it.

A single person is able to take handheld non-stabilised shots at 1/8 s doesn't mean that everyone can do it. Please learn something about minimum shutter speeds for handheld shooting.

XZ2 turned out really one of the best android devices this year, topping benchmarks, excellent batterylife, excellent camera performance, excellent audio, great sturdiness, and that few tricks of its own, DVS, 3D scanner, SDR to HDR upscaling, and 10bit hdr video....
Just the darn lack of jack there... Ummmh...
Bring that back, and it will be a perfect smartphone.
