Though, it might have a ... moreIt will be a great battle if happen, Leica vs Carl-Zeiss, those are really great lenses in the optics and camera industry. However, sensor talks. You can not beat large sensor by just three, four, or even eight lenses with small sensors put together. The problem is, sensor is a bulky thing, everyone hate thick like a brick phones. I have several phones and its all slim and beautiful. For some cases, I can tolerate not too thick phones but it must have advantages in camera, so I can accept rather bulky Nokia Lumia 1020 and the real bulky 14mm Nokia 808 Pureview.

At least the brand phones should give us an option to choose whether we prefer lollipop colours and over sharpening or have more realistic one on an image. IMO it's not fair that the Huawei makes decision over me. Is there any easy solution to shut down the AI on P20 Pro camera?

I don't really like to pixel peep but here's my case in point about lens advancement. Look at the lower right corner of the Joy Station picture. You can still read the words in the Huawei photo but not in the Nokia. Though, in the last picture the Nokia trumps the Huawei. Not sure why the pattern became like that (probably processing) but oddly enough, in the lower right corner (again) of the Huawei photo, the pattern looks the same as the Nokia. Only in the middle of the picture the pattern became a bizarre alien pattern.
Maybe some people don't like that Huawei is "winning" but they're just making the photos Instagram ready for most of the target audience. Most people don't really bother pixel peeping unlike some "pros". For the few "pros" out there with their expensive calibrated 4K screen and stuffs, there's the Pro/BW mode. While not as robust as the Nokia, at least it's there and the processing is much more mild compared to Auto/AI mode. And you can always post-process using the brilliant Snapseed if you're still not happy. But wait, you're a "pro", why are you reading an article about a smartphone camera? Go back to dpreview.

The Nokia stood well against time. Though, it might have a great sensor but the processing and lens is old. Try shooting into any light and you'll get crazy flares. I think it's great that Huawei dared to try similar tech in the Android ecosystem with current modern hardware. Maybe we'll even see Nokia Pureview making a comeback. Pretty sure they have it in the pipeline. Huawei vs Nokia. Leica vs Zeiss. Can't wait.

I think that just because one "won" over the other in a blind test doesn't exactly mean that it produces a higher quality picture. It just produces a picture that more people prefer.
Both have their pros and cons.
I personally like the sharpness and vibrancy of the P20 as do most people. But I also really liked the natural colors of the 1020. But the thing I see that no one has mentioned was how much more white the 1020s photos were compared to the P20. Either the white balancing was off every time on the P20 or the post processing skewed the white.

Nice battle you`ve organized here,GSMA...It`s a good thing to see a 5 year old smartphone with the best camera back then,against a brand new flagship device of today,with the best camera right now...Glad to see a proof that good ol` Nokia can still be a rival to a mighty device from 2018...and,if I remember correctly,Lumia 1020 did cost about 400euro back then,so not even half the price of Huawei P20Pro...I think that is a great score for Nokia..oh,and great pics from both devices,too..

Nokia 808 has manual options to customize post-processing. For example you can adjust sharpness, saturation, ... So you can have more sharpness if you want. I don't know whether 1020 has these options.

Just pointed it out to you in case you thought (did you?) that the P20 output was superior in some of the photos which I don't think it won even once, viewing from a computer monitor and not from a small phone screen.
Your statement above (in quotes) seemed to imply the 1020 lacked 'advanced' processing while the p20 could tone down its 'advanced' processing.
The presence of very visible jaggies and other sharpening artifacts and unremoved chromatic aberrations in the P20 is clearly not 'advanced' processing if this is what you meant by those quoted statements. Otherwise, you can consider my comments as wrong interpretation of what you really wanted to say or imply.

It has 5x zoom, biggest problem with smartphone cams is optical zoom without losing the quality. Zoom is what everyone trying to improve now.

People don't like thick phones, that was one of the biggest reason why Nokia doesn't have phone Company anymore.

Last time i checked Nokia doesn't run any phone Company anymore ;) so yes i agree monkeys was working on Nokia and they didn't really understand what is appealing.

And of course the Lumia would leave any phone for dead once the Xenon flash goes off. B was clearly the winner if you're pixel peaking, but I prefer the colours in A

The photos are more true to life smooth and no forced post procesing scharpness that make any profesional photographer vomit. 1020's photographs are way more editable then the others ones. Again a plus point for a professional. People who voted here are also those who have no ideea. They see colorfull and nasty sharpness and: uh, is perfekt. But at the end, is all about "averageness". It always wins.

Butcher... moreTry viewing the same photo comparison on a desktop PC with calibrated 24" full HD IPS monitor or better yet, a PC with calibrated 4K monitor and you'll see why the Lumia 1020 output is vastly superior in ALL instances to the Huawei P20 Pro's output. The clock face alone where you see the 1-minute marks in the Lumia 1020 but almost all wiped out in the P20 pro, and the window blinds where you are supposed to see regular gray hexagons (Lumia 1020) vs. the pinkish mess of vertical rectangles and diamonds in the Huawei P20 pro. That is the truth that mobile phone only viewers of gsmarena will never see. Moral lesson? When you judge image quality of phones, please view them in a calibrated PC monitor. It will save you lots of cash in phone purchases/upgrades.

Come to think of it... The poll results are a reflection of the number of gsmarena users viewing the comparisons in their desktop PC's vs gsmarena users viewing the comparisons in their mobile phones. Photo comparisons should be viewed in large desktop screens, not small phone screens in order to make accurate judgments. That is why naive smartphone buyers complain why their smartphone photos look so good on their phone screens and on their mobile Facebook posts but look horrible when viewed in their desktop PC's.

More people chose the Huawei P20 Pro ('B'... moreI just took a look again at the photo comparisons swiping left and right, this time, using my 5.8" LG V20 phone using the mobile gsmarena website. Surprise! The P20 pro's output seems to look sharper, punchier and 'livelier' than the Lumia 1020 ones making me like the P20 pro output better on the 5.8" screen. That's probably why the P20 pro WON. But hey! You do not judge photo quality on a small, uncalibrated smartphone screen! Go to your desktop PC's, and view the photo comparisons on the desktop gsmarena site (not the mobile site which tends to soften the lumia 1020's output). View the comparison on a calibrated 24" or larger 4K monitor and you'll see the superiority of the Lumia 1020's output in terms of photo quality over that of the P20 Pro's output. Those of you who chose the P20 Pro, try viewing the comparisons on your desktop PC with calibrated 24" 4K (or at least 1080p) IPS monitor and chances are you'll choose the Lumia 1020 for all comparisons like I did.
