Lumia 1020 vs. Huawei P20 Pro

10 April 2018
While most makers are coming up with all sorts of different dual camera setups, Huawei figured that's no longer enough and fitted three on the back of the P20 Pro. But 3 is not the number that's captivated us most; rather, it's 40 - the P20 Pro comes with a 40MP primary camera.

Anonymous, 11 Apr 2018So you say.... people simply to what looks better. Picture A = naturally beautiful woman with no makeup applied
Picture B = woman with below average beauty, but with full-on makeup to increase attractiveness

Shallow people will fall for B, while people in touch with reality will go for A.

Next time use Nokia 808 instead of 1020. Everyone knows that 808 has better camera. So we can see how the world's best cameraphone (Nokia 808) compares to today's phones.

      4/5 chose the P20 Pro.

I already lost faith in humanity. I just want a 40MP and above camera than can take a picture that looks and colored the same way an average 20/20 person see. No oversharpening, no washed up colors from the P20 Pro photos.

Oh well, I'll look forward to the approach of Nokia 9.

For me the nokia is much better in keeping the details and color fringing in the huawei is worst. A lil bit over exposed images are pleasant to look but image quality is what is important. Nokia for me, is the winner.

Too bad just by having a great camera can't make up that i can't make full use of the screen, and unable to listen to music except through the speakers.

Am I the only one to like the Nokia Lumia 1020 picture quality more than the Huawei P20 Pro?
To be brutally honest, I like natural post processing and realistic colours. I voted for Phone A in all the photo comparisons except for the last one of the glass building. The Nokia Lumia 1020 still delivers stellar quality photos. The Huawei P20 Pro looks to up the exposure (which looks kinda over exposed). The Lumia 1020 looks more natural to my eyes. My pick: Lumia 1020

In my own opinion about those photos
Lumia 1020 still create good photos (very smooth) it's just that people chose Huawei P20 which is over exposure, it looks so noisy for me.

I agree with you, but why even bother to develop a camera on mobile device if you haven't got any target like to aim a better quality camera than on Nokia 808. Our preferences might be different. It looks like that the brands not even try to get realistic camera module on mobile device. Why? Do we need to buy and carry a DSLR camera with us all the time to get natural like photos in year 2018. If we have that kind of device year 2012.

That's why auto mode is extremely important for a good camera.

A professional would get better results with a mobile phone than an amateur would get with a camera that costs more than a luxury car, but then a professional will also most likely use ,you know, "professional tools" so comparing smartphone cameras is for ammtuers that just want a quick photo ready processed for showing it to their friends.

Is the overprocessed image from P20 pro because of using that AI recognition scene? Anyway its best to stay at 10mp supersampling resolution, turn off the AI mod, usually scene recognition results in punchy pictures, but also produce oversharpen, high contrast and overexposed pictures.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 and its predecessor, Nokia 808 are legend at that times. I mostly prefer realistic, bright, sharp and vivid images all the time without being oversaturated, overcoloured or burned by the flash. Looks nice while posted on social media doesn't mean a good quality photos. But who cares, everyone just want to look nice on social media.

Back when the 808 and later the 1020 were released reviewers would compare them not only to other smartphones but also to a SLR set as reference. I'm quite sure the poll results would be a bit different if it were the case.

It's also worth noting that Nokia's approach to photography was to provide the user more settings for them to play with. It doesn't take much effort to increase the saturation, for instance. There's also live histogram for those who feel like going further.

So how about taking some evening shots with the two smartphones and a full frame camera with real good glass, no auto settings at all? Let's see what some photographer skill can do to take the most from all three platforms.

Let's face it. Most of users are not professional photographer. They just like picture that looks 'good' without going into the details. That is why P20 Pro winning.
