LG V30 ThinQ long-term review

30 April 2018
AI is the definitive buzzword of 2018, don't you ThinQ? LG certainly does, so it's jumped on the hype train and created its own AI-focused brand, then slapped it onto what is basically last year's V30 with more RAM and storage - and some brand new AI features of course.

Tomorrow g7 will be announced. Same dimensions but with SD845. Who is going to but V30S after that?

Since the V30S ships with Android 8.0, does that mean it's fully Treble-compliant, unlike the V30S that only ships with 7.1.2 ?

Vic, 30 Apr 2018Actually not only LG but also a lot of people are seeing a ... moreThat's because Phone cameras have small sensors.
Which means they are challenged for light, challenged for detail, challenged for distance.

Hence, the proper way to use a Phone's Camera is in Good Lighting at Close Proximity.
Which essentially means capturing people standing 1-5 metres away. And in that use-case, a Wide Angle lens actually helps squeeze more people (horizontally) into the photo.
A Black-White camera is largely useless because it still struggles to aid capturing details in conditions like Low-Light and Long-Distance. But what is entirely useless is a Telephoto camera, it fails its own task and brings nothing to the table (and in fact, handicaps the device as it increases cost and reduces internal space). And even Samsung's Dual-Aperture is a gimmick, when looking at the photo quality.

The new Huawei P20 Pro has the best camera currently. But its not because of the BW camera or the Telephoto camera. It's not because it uses Three Cameras. The quantity is not why. The P20 Pro has the best camera simply because it has the largest sensor.

If Google continue this year with their track record Single-Camera, Best quality, and Best software... they may destroy the likes of the iPhone X, S9+, and P20 Pro if Google puts in a large sensor. And if you do not believe me that sensor size is what makes the camera, please have a look at the history: smartphone sensors have grown in size from the lowly iPhone 3GS (1/2.8") to the P20 Pro (1/1.7")... almost three times larger (Analogy: imagine if your on a medium-sized sailboat and you change the sail to one that is x3 smaller, you are going to get much much less propulsion and control).

Anonymous, 30 Apr 2018LG is a good cellphone brand but im afraid to buy LG phones... moreUsed G2 for over 4 years, and l could say LG make solid phones. (G4 issues not included)
Now l use Zenfone 5. It's also a good phone. Beautiful screen, good battery life, and smooth performance.

Lg's flagships have two unique features, wide angle camera and quad DAC, but you did not even mention the latter. The sound quality of G6s and V30s is in a league of its own and should be more emphasized.

Idk what they are doing to have such bad quality control on their phones.
Their other products are fine in quality, just their smartphones have these weird problems like they're made by an amateur company.
Even Chinese phones are better built than their phones are.

What they did is tell users to lower brightness to lower the chance for burn-in to happened. Top of the line TV with $10,000+ price tag, need to dim the light, what a joke. Better wait for MicroLED that superior than OLED in every ways.

I have the same device, and I agree with most of what the review says, but not everything. Especially concerning the blue shifting, I don't think that the problems concerns only people with "OCD", which by the way I find it insulting for those who actually suffer such a disease. Anyhow, in my case, I often use the phone while it is sitting on my desk, and from my angle, which is not "steep" as the review says, white becomes blue, which is quite annoying. This is only thing that sometimes really bothers me. I also miss the removable battery, which I would have gladly traded with the IP68, and settled "down" for the IP67 (like the Samsung S5), which for me it is more than enough. The glass on the back is a nonsense trend: portable devices fall at one point and glass breaks, how hard is to understand this? Nevertheless... despite all these important drawbacks, for the rest it's an overall handy device, definitely the best from LG. Acceptable battery life, very fast user experience (but only after I disabled all LG services and especially Chrome), good camera, and great design.

I can explain what mean "long term" for LG. Let's remember how long time ago this crappy company released G4. Not so much. Yesterday I called official service to order new battery. Do you know what? LG don't have it in ALL my country! They just stopped to support even parts to repair after just 3 years of initial release and 1.5 years after finishing. Amazing company. Really. Never ever any of LG. No phones, no fridges, no vacuuns, no conditioners, nothing EVER. This company worth just to disappear. And I wish it to LG from all of my heart.
