LG G7 ThinQ hands-on review

02 May 2018
The LG G7's fate seemed uncertain throughout the last couple of months as the company's new leadership was reviewing past and future projects. Well, the new management also happened to think G7 is what the maker needs to do next, and here is our first look at the LG G7 ThinQ.

This hands-on review was published on 2 May. It's almost 2 months and there is no sign of the full review to show up. Do gsmarena team really forget about this phone? Even Xiaomi Mi 8 has already been reviewed by them.

In term of signal reception, I'm happy to tell you that it's better than LG G6. It now has better reception and much less signal lost, and also better at keeping on 4G network.

For battery use, yes, it's not the best in class. But it still can hold up for a day (assuming you fully charge the phone in the morning). Unless you use it intensively, I think it will suit the need of most users.

Exception would be getting the G7 with a contract - don't know where you're from, but just assuming it might be central Europe? For instance in Germany, 1&1 offers a contract for a total of 960€ over 24 months that includes:
        - the LG G7ThinQ itself
        - a 10GB LTEmax contract
        - a 160€ myDays travelling coupon (one that is actually usable :D)
        - a 130€ Star Wars collector package
... which basically means you get the phone itself nearly for free. And cheaper than the V30 as well, which is weird xD

MediaMarkt / Saturn offer the last two (myDays and Star Wars) for the retail price of 850€.

Anyway, I would look either for something like that OR - as said - just buy the V30.

This year I would like to buy a new phone, my secret favorite was LG G7, but I am "afraid" of the pricing:
          Oneplus6 (520 euro)
          Samsung S9 (580 euro)
or even: LG V30 (510 euro)
          , but: LG G7 ---> ~ 850 euro (4/64 version) ???
If LG asks much more for their product, I will sadly choose something else.
(HTC U12+ will be expensive too ~800 euro(6/64 version), but the company is not a successful one, as we know...)

I have to DISAGREE that the G7 has nothing unique to it and that it has to be priced lower than the rest of the flagships. You see, if others put three eyes or variable lenses just so their already very visually able phones can see better, LG on the other hand optimizes the audio experience with the Hi-Fi quad DAC, dts-X, and a modified build that significantly amplifies output sound. And as for me, although my opinion does not represent every consumer's opinion, there's not really much improvement in the current flagships' photographs, I doubt these new cameras will ever take photos that we haven't ever seen before. Also, I have reason to believe most people spend more time listening to music or watching media content that take pictures. In this case, choosing the G7 for the same flagship price may just be more practical.

I think the phone looks very promising as far as the new specs indicate.

However everyone these days seem so preoccupied by the cameras and display.

What about the antennas in the phone? How good are the radio capabilities of this device? It is after all a phone first and foremost right?

Additionally I'm curious about the reduction in size regarding the internal battery. Is this in part due to the difference in the display type as indicated in the review?

                        P20Pro: 89h endurance rating (Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery)
                        V30: 93h endurance rating (Non-removable Li-Po 3300 mAh battery)

AnonD-756898, 04 May 2018This phone is a total wreck. High price, piss poor battery... morethe Samsung S9 has the same specs (Non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery, SD845, 8MP front camera, wireless charging, almost same pixel density) and nobody complains about the S9...why so many LG haters????
You use the same cheap excuse (the bootloop problems on some LG models 2 years ago)...if I use your way of thinking I'll never buy a Galaxy Note again (everybody seems to forget about explosives Note7 2 years ago).

3k battery with a 6 inch screen? No thanks; I'll stick with my glitchy P20 Pro (at least it has decent battery).

Somebody tell Samsung and LG that whilst they make the best phones overall, no one will care to buy it if the battery life is subpar compared with the competition.

You write:"It's just the LG G7 doesn't have a standout feature. Not that the G5's modular design helped its sales despite the stunning camera, but today every flagship has something to brag with. The iPhone has Face ID, the Galaxy has the variable camera aperture, the P20 Pro has a triple camera, the Xperia shoots 4K HDR video, the Mi Mix 2 has a borderless display."

Well, in fact LG does stand out from the above 4 competitors: LG G7 has slot for external storage AND 3,5mm jack out AND an internal DAC.
