Moto Z3 Play hands-on review

06 June 2018
Today Motorola announced the next-generation Moto Z series with the Moto Z3 Play serving as the headliner. Being a placeholder for both flagship (Force) and mid-range (Play) devices, all Moto Z phones have one thing in common - they all support the iconic Moto mods.

So IF they plan to have a series of Z4 at the least compatible with some of the existing Mods, it would be good for the Z3 series sales to tell so...

Personally I'm eagerly awaiting the QWERTY Mods from Livermorium, I've ordered, and expect to buy a Z3-force -or perhaps just a Z3 Play- for them.

        At $500, they should've used SD 710

However, that could be overshadowed by releasing some impressive new units and perhaps some impressive new mods (if the new ones support mods). making the users still feel like they want to upgrade, despite not being able to use their mods.

if they announce future phones can't use current mods, it will hurt sales, probably even Z3 series sales, even though the current mods out there should cover most user cases, as many of the mods are on the expensive side for being product specific accessories. I don't think that enough potential customers in the first few months will be worried in such a way if would significantly hurt sales... however if they announced it would for sure.
It would also leave them without anything to overshadow the announcement with.
And prices of mods would drop. Great for owners or earlier units. Or perhaps some that pick up the z3 and a cheap mod, thinking it is still worth it despite the short lifecycle. But it would also kill the market for mods, killing any potential revenue from it, when retailers just empty their stock and don't order any new ones.

I actually kind of like the pins on the back... they could work as a design detail.
If the Z4 gets new mods, I hope they take advantage of that and actually make them a stand out design detail.

I think the hasselblad mod wasn't thought through, in that it covers the built in camera for no reason. They could have used both for depth sensing. Also the built in, with it's brighter lens is probably better in some low light situations.

I would love the idea of that keyboard mod... but it should have had backlit keys. And I hope there is support for local letters.
I know some people prefer predictive text input and finds it quicker... But I don't. I write a lot of different texts so there is no way for predictive text input to learn my patterns and suggest the right word. Predictive text suits those that say the same thing over and over, best.
I just hope Lenovo makes it offical Moto Mod, so that it will be easy to get hold on.
I also hopes the interest is large enough that others starts making similar products... there used to be, up until iPhone 4 or so, 3rd party bluetoth keyboards.
Samsung did attempt the keyboard case, but the performance apparently wans't that good, since it relied on actually triggering the keys on the screen.
I hope to see keyboard accessories for at least the latest iPhone offerings and the Samsung flagships.

These days screen size gets bigger in most smartphones but battery size get smaller! 🤣

Zero, 06 Jun 2018Wait.. WHAT? Moto Z4 will kill the Moto Mods??Well it does not say that it IS the end - though it MIGHT be so....

                  They guaranteed three generations.
So there might and might not be a Z4 series.
And even if a Z4 arrives, it MIGHT be that just not ALL mods are supported.

But Lenovo OUGHT to state something official, as it might else inhibit the sales of the Z3, as it is not tempting to be buying into a dying system...

I have the Z2 Play. While I'm happy with it I have to say that there is a Bluetooth bug that stops me connecting to certain devices. I hope they fixed that in the Z3 or it's not worth the upgrade .

Why GSMArena is saying that Moto Z4 would be incompatible with MotoMods. Is it true really???
