Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium hands-on review

Premium Sony Xperias is where a lot of firsts happen - first 4K display on a smartphone with the Z5 Premium, first HDR display on a smartphone with the XZ Premium alongside 960fps super slow-mo video recording, and now, on the Xperia XZ2 Premium - a dual camera for the first time on a Sony smartphone (a bit late to that party, eh?).

You probably don't own a dSLR or a 28" 4K monitor to see just how garbage anything is above ISO 800 in a smartphone and how very important manual controls are. A smartphone truly targeted for photography/video enthusiasts don't cripple the manual settings as you have on the Xperia XZ2 ultra. Yes, my smartphone with manual audio, manual ISO, manual shutter speeds and selectable frame rates will do better than this phone because even if it captures brighter images with its ultra high ISO's (6400, 12800, 25600, 51200), they are all garbage.

                  I mean the right way to compare is using same settings. Like both using:

                  1) Daylight

                  Iso50 + 1/2000s
                  Iso 50 + 1/1400s
                  Iso50 + 1/800s

                  2) low light

                  Iso 100 + 1s
                  Iso 100 + 1/2s
                  Iso 200 + 1/8s
                  Iso 400 + 1/16s
                  Iso 800 + 1/32s

                  Then we can see how software of both handle situations.
                  I see a lot Sammyboys complain about the fact Pixel 2 has HDR on by default and the other dont also saying is not fair.


                  IMX380-devivated + f1.6 of XZ2P absorbs 3x more light than S9+ and its 1/2.5" + f1.5. Not even counting here the imx400 + f1.8

                  XZ2P does not need to go iso 50 or 100 to wipe floor with poor s9+.

                  And even handheld it can now go 1s on auto if necessary.

                    Any phone with camera2 api enabled can do whatever the hell your phone can, but the superior hardware and optics of the XZ2 Premium will leave your phone to dust in photography.
                    Just for instance, XZ2 Premium with ISO 51200 for photos will take a much brighter image than your phone with ISO 12800, even if you use a full 1-minute exposure time vs 30s exposure time on the XZ2 Premium.

                          But controls are the same : AF, ISO, WB, SS and EV.

                          Even phones with OIS suffer blur if you set 1s.

Considering to get Sammy next year if Sony still decides to continue this kind of design. My Xperia XZ is 2 years old this October. Time for an upgrade.

I got too familiar with the S9+ aspect ratio that the XZ2 Premium just looks too square. If the camera module of this arrives in an XZ3, I'd probably consider it as the rumors suggest them switching to the wider aspect ratio as well.
