The cameras on iPhones are the most popular and widely used in the world.
Do you really think that average people who uses their smartphone cameras on regular daily basis care about these manual modes? Absolutely, the auto mode is used the most on any smartphone.
You can pretend to be a "pro" all you want who prefers to use manual modes on a smart phone, however I guarantee you the market for your kind is minuscule to even be considered by any manufacturers. That's why photo editing apps are thriving in both platforms, why use manual modes when you can do a lot in apps? Video editing on an iPhone btw is a far superior experience to any Android, and that is because of their superior processor.

It only shows how lacking you are in reading comprehension. I never said I use smartphones as my primary equipment for photography or videography. I have my dSLR and 7 lenses for photography (3 of the lenses are f/1.4 primes) thank you. And I have my camcorder as my main videography tool. However, like any experienced photography enthusiast, I expect nothing less than manual controls, battery stamina, storage flexibility, bright aperture/aperture flexibility and lens focal length flexibility from a smartphone that costs more than my dSLR body.
If you like to waste money by shooting photos and videos on an obscenely priced iPhone XS Max with auto only mode and zero manual controls, then go ahead, buy it. Otherwise, if you want a smartphone that will give you a lot more photographic and videographic controls and a lot more flexibility for the highest quality photos and the highest quality 4K videos possible, then get the Samsung Note 9. It will be vastly better everyday photo/video tool when you don't have your dSLR and camcorder around and it won't cost you an obscene $1,100 for a 64GB fixed, non expandable storage.

The review was clearly for everyday use. As if anyone would buy a smartphone for the sole purpose of taking photos and videos.

The iPhone XS Max camera is for kids. Anyone serious into photography and videography should never buy one especially at such obscene pricing only to find out just how inutile and worthless the iPhone XS Max's camera is which doesn't even have the most basic of manual controls (ISO, shutter speed, etc.), and doesn't have any option to disable the face detection triggered aggressive noise reduction that makes you look like a plastic doll (a. k. a. "beauty gate").
The iPhone XS Max doesn't have the stamina either to take more pictures for longer because Apple has equipped it with a very small capacity battery; not like the Note 9's huge 4000mAh battery. Furthermore, the Note 9 has a brighter/wider aperture (f/1.5) which makes it capture better photos/videos indoors and in low light, with lower ISO's and therefore lower noise levels than the iPhone's f/1.8 equipped camera. And what's more, the Note 9 has dual aperture with the smaller one (f/2.4), best used in bright daylight for the sharpest photos and videos and the larger one (f/1.5), for excellent low light photos/videos. Want to know more truths about what really matters the most in photography and videography? STORAGE EXPANSION. Everybody would want to shoot their memorable occasions in RAW photo format for the best photos/photo editing and shoot videos in glorious 4K at the highest quality 4K 60fps setting for the best video quality. Why? Because even if you don't have a 65" 4K UHD tv now to see the HUGE DIFFERENCE between full HD and 4K, you will surely regret you didn't shoot that memorable footage in 4K once you get that 4K tv or 4K monitor just because your storage is full, and your stupid iPhone doesn't have micro sd storage expansion. And you thought the iPhone's HEVC format at 50% less storage space requirement will do magic to your base 64GB internal storage once you start getting serious with photography and videography.
Surprise! Surprise! In a phone camera shootout with almost identical high quality sensors, these features--- manual camera/video controls, large battery, micro sd storage, maximum lens aperture and lens options - ultrawide, wide and telephoto and NOT 'beauty-gate' selfie photos software processing are actually THE MOST IMPORTANT things to look for in a smartphone for anybody who frequently uses it as a photography/videography device. I am seriously surprised these MAJOR differences between the Note 9 and iPhone XS Max where NOT highlighted in the review. Highlighting the things which matter the most in photography and videography would have greatly helped people make the right purchasing decision if they are concerned at all about using the phone frequently for photo and video shooting. Bottom line, if you really are into serious smartphone photography or videography, the Note 9 is a VASTLY BETTER, MORE SUPERIOR choice and NO, they're not 'approximately the same' or 'at par' as the camera review suggests.

if you want to send some awesome pocture shot from a professional camera and that camera doesn't have a network function? But it use microSD card. You can take out card and plug in Note 9 and send.
if you want to play a 320kbps sound on a show and want this music go into mixer. 3.5mm to 6.5mm cable everywhere, very easy to use. and you can play the music by press your SPen. don't need to hold your phone. even with charger connected.

Hopefully it remains.. Its a cheap form of storage.. Even if nvme drives are fast people use platter drives for bulk storage.. Its more practical.. And saying usb c or lightning saves space is not correct.. They need space for an onboard dac anyway.. Iphone removed the headphone jack for a huge haptic engine, not the most practical of moves. Even though I'm pro progress(like how i believe rtx is the future for graphic cards) i would not go for a phone that i cannot use and charge together

shouldn't even be comment worthy isn't it?
Oh right, cause the Note 9 isn't totally destroying Apple, thats why it's lies right?
Only Note 9 must win, bias/rigged results also acceptable, as long as beat Apple right?

S6 User, 18 Oct 2018Soo, taking away useful features & adding an obtrusive ... more3.5mm jack is not useful, it's just an old and common interface at the end of its life.
We now have wireless headphones, thus no tangled wires anymore, no broken jacks, no more flinging your phone over on the floor when you gesticulate and your hands get caught in the headphone wires.
However, I agree. Notches look bad and should not have been created.
But screen extensions (like Apple's iPhones use) make sense and are awesome. Not to mention they are functional and make proper use of the phone's front.
And before you ask:
Screen extensions = keeping all the phone's sensors, earpiece, camera, etc. at the top, while extending the screen around them.
Notches = stripping the phone of certain sensors, earpiece, etc., but not being able to get rid of everything, thus making a cutout on the screen for the camera and/or the earpiece.
Apple created screen extensions to be used by the clock and notification icons, while the others, not fully understanding the concept behind it and what this should be, created notches instead, trying to fit content in that space.

The objective Guy, 17 Oct 2018Samsung phones are some of the most feature packed phones o... moreDon't worry, the next lineup of Smasung phones will finally get rid of the unneeded 3.5mm jack. That's old technology and this company is now trying to catch up to Apple. (as always)
Wireless charging is available on phones which are now under $200.
MicroSD slot is going to go out soon too. It's just unneeded and takes up component space inside the phone. It's just like a DVD drive or a floppy disk drive; things of the past.
'Nice RAM' as in 'compensate on the lack of efficiency and performance by using more RAM chips, thus making phones bigger'.
No notch means that there is unused space on the front of the phone. Which means it's wasted space. I much rather have the clock and notification icons on the sides of the earpiece and sensors instead of having them eating precious space from the main screen area.
Samsung uses old tech and ideas and brags about being conservative. (3.5mm jack, no notch, SDcard, etc.)
Thanks, but I prefer innovation over anything else.
