Huawei Mate 20 Pro review

27 October 2018
We love fall and it's not only for the beauty of nature's colorful cloak. It is also the season for all the big fat makers in the industry to pull the wraps off their latest smartphones. And what a blast these couple of weeks have been! And there is still plenty more to see before the month of Techtober is over but today we're focusing on the new Mate 20 series, which is bound to leave a mark on the industry.

Overall this phone and especially its camera are overhyped and overrated.

        The video recording, anyone?!?
On top of being sub par in regular 4K, it doesn't even offer 4K60fps which is INEXCUSABLE.
The Note 9 absolutely blows away Mate 20 Pro as a camcorder!!
Also the S Pen is just so much better and more useful feature than any of the Mate's gimmicks - reverse charging, the stupid half baked screen fingerprint that requires you to put the finger on the exact small spot indistinguishable by touch, and the face scanner.
Oh and it also has a 3.5mm jack, and don't tell me the wobbly and wear prone USB C (ab)used for charging also is a good replacement.
Finally, the autonomy(battery endurance)seems overstated in other reviews and no better than that of Note 9 overall.

Bottom line, Mate 20 Pro isn't even the best phone on the market, and it costs 200 euros more than the best one - the Note 9.

I was impressed, until I read the video part.

            Great review.

Great device, but overprice. If u have Note 9, keep it. Mate 20 Pro is indeed faster & better in many department, but its not worth it, unless u go buy straight to this device. I'm only interesting on the vanilla Mate 20 version review, which the best price per performance ratio phone as of now.

And i know using EMUI, battery life are a lot better using overtime & on a long term usage, your phone wont be slowing down with great performance in real world.

Walter C. Dornez, 29 Oct 2018I have to admit, I feel like this phone was slightly overhy... moreI wouldn't say it was overhyped. It was expected to be a massive improvement over the Mate 10 Pro, which turned out to be correct. It was also supposed to offer the highest specs & offer the best triple camera setup this year, which also turned out correct. To top it off, it has the most gimmick features too (which do matter in the tech world). I would say the phone lived upto it's hype.

The review did not mention anything about thew recent news that Huawei was cheating at Geekbench and other benchmarks. The P20/P20pro gsmarena reviews said that they got uncomfortably hot during Geekbench which was because Huawei rigged the rom to recognize the benchmark running and altered the performance profile to push the cpu beyond normal limits to give a better score.

There is Pixel3 but not Mate 20 nor Pro

Is this a joke? Ur phone has more common things with a Samsung s7 than the mate 20! It's a completely different phone!

What about software update ??? Resale value ???

Those improvements are not enough for me to justify upgrading from my Mate 10 Pro to this new Mate 20 Pro. If it has the old good headphone jack then it definitely a good reason to upgrade.

anybody knows when the Huawei mate 20 pro 8gb ram & 256gb will be in the market, so far I can see offering the 6 - 128.
                            Thanks

Gets hotspots doing benchmarks, I imagine gaming and shooting video results in same thing. The new Kirin is a Chinese Star but is going to be crushed by next Snapdragon. It barely can hold it's own ground gaming against phones costing a little over half of this flash in the pan Mate, lol.

ROG will kill this in sustained performance metrics an yet cost less unless your all about cameras then the Note would be a better choice. Meh this phone is a camera phone with sporty non gaming soc. Even with gimmicks it's going to fall behind once it goes BBQ state. Bah. Going to beat Apple it was, maybe as laughing stock. Buyer's remorse will set in months down the road with this especially at that price.

Obvious the battery test is flawed. It is absurd to say kirin 980 is worse than kirin 970.

And the cpu/GPU test also was not done on performance mode.

I'm not worried Exynos next generation beats kirin 980 as Exynos uses about twice the number of GPU cores and takes it toll on battery life. Snapdragon next generation no doubt will have better GPU as well but consistent performance, battery life, AI will give kirin 980 a lead in real life.

All the speed tests on YouTube show mate 20 pro killing all others including iPhone despite iPhone benchmarks may fool you into believing otherwise.

Not worth to have this phone.

Slow born and fast drain.... Lol
