Night mode ON: Pixel 3 vs. Mate 20 Pro

23 November 2018
It's going to be a strictly after-dark clash between computational photography chief Google and night mode pioneer Huawei to try and establish who takes the better (handheld) low-light shots.

For regular scenes the icon of LOW LIGHT shows up or NIGHT SCENE....

UHS wont use shutter 1/16.. This value is for iso400, even iso800 uses 1/24 or 1/32

People are jealous because:

1) no longer can use the OIS excuse to bash
2) Premium at iso3200 can easily outperform Note9 and Xs Max at iso250

Ugh, I typed a pretty long comment but the connection glitched and it failed to submit, now it's all gone. I'm certainly not typing it all over again.

    Short version:
Night sight could be kept on as long as you have a reasonably steady hand and isn't capturing any action. It will improve image quality in almost all circumstances, day and night. It generally has a notable shadow-midtone advantage to night shot or Mate20P's auto, while highlights vary.
Night mode is best kept off in most conditions. In some extreme darkness where auto is too noisy, night mode helps a bit. Night mode works best on a tripod, but then a regular long exposure RAW in pro mode might work just as well, or even better, with more control.

Quite obvious those Mate 20 Pro Night shoot lack detail...just the usual watercolour mess. On the other hand, Pixel 3's Night Sight capture so much detail.
Lot of people here really have no idea what is more precious in a picture. The lack of detail: you can't recover it with any apps. On the other hand, colour (warmer or cooler) is just so easy to adjust with apps.

Sad that even GOOGLE can't make a better night mode than Huawei despite having many more months to do it.

The Mate 20 Pro once again showing why it's the best Flagship this year, absolutely excellent results, considering this device also has the best battery life, this makes it the ultimate camera to have with you.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2018Less noise, more detail, better WB, no motion blur, no a... moreThere will be some motion blur because in low light most of the time XZ2 Premium chooses the shutter speed of up to 1/16s. Both HDR+ and Mate 20 Pro's auto mode are quite good at eliminating motion blur so I don't think it would be a huge problem in any of those 3 phones. Less noise? Well that's because Ultra High Sensitivity Mode on Sony takes away a lot of details if it's taken under ISO 6400. And whether a photo looks "artificial" or not really depends on who sees it, but personally I won't call it any more natural than Pixel's or Mate's shots when it's destroying highlight details or crushing shadows unlike other two.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2018Pixel is crappy when hdr+ is off.. High iso with slow sh... morePixel without HDR+ being crap is an error on Google's part for using an average quality sensor. XZ2 Premium is impressive without HDR+, and it will go a league higher after using it.

High ISO will not always ruin your photo. It depends on every situation, and like I've said, I'm not implying that the phone should always use the highest ISO the sensor is capable of at all times, but it would be a massive help in situations where it's almost impossible to gather some bits of light.
The high ISO capability will defy the need for a slow shutter speed. It also reduces the effect of motion blur that hand shakes create.
I do understand the HDR+ getting the other Sony camera features disabled, but an option must always be present; whether the user doesn't want to miss out to capture special moments or prioritize the overall image quality first in exchange to lost opportunities of capturing the special moments.
Besides, the memory-stacked sensor would help capture multiple full-resolution frames much faster as well.

The stacking only improves the dynamic range, doesn't mean the monochrome will be useless, because as you've said, it would help lower the amount of noise of the RGB sensor, so there would be no need for noise reduction when stacking.

Shanti Dope, 24 Nov 2018By uglier, you mean significantly more detailed, right? Hi... morePixel is crappy when hdr+ is off..

High iso with slow shutter for a phone will turn your pic into a white board. Manly this one that can easiy pass 12800.
Shutter slower than 1/32 s will have motion blur.
If they wanted they could have copied hdr+ but it would not work well with some features..

If you stack, you do not need higher iso, so the mono becomes useless.

It is obvious the difference between P3 and P2, but it is too artificial, wrong WB

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2018High ISO+slower shutter + hdr = scene uglier than pixel 3 xlBy uglier, you mean significantly more detailed, right?
High ISO allows the sensor to see more in the dark, which is great for boosting shadow details.
HDR will use the lower ISO exposure for better highlight control.
The amount of light that the monochrome sensor could perceive will help reduce the amount of time of capturing a Night Sight image.

The thing is, the software would use its own brain and know just how much light is needed in a particular scene and what's going to be good for producing a well-balanced image.
If this setup makes you think that it would produce overly exposed shots, you're wrong, because this setup is only for situations where it would be possible for the XZ2 Premium to see something clearly while the others would be close to unusable.

Shab, 24 Nov 2018Xperia xz2 premium is best in night modeI highly doubt it, as XZ2 Premium doesn't use any sort of HDR-like processing in low light. The monochrome sensor is purely there to reduce noise in high ISO settings and doesn't help in increasing dynamic range, so the image is guaranteed to end up being either overexposed or underexposed if there are any harsh light sources.

Now take the XZ2 Premium's High Sensitivity capabilities and pair it up with Google's Night Sight algorithm and imagine the results :))

#Pixelgate. Never known a phone on launch to have so many issues.

Here's what I found reading this article:
-In auto, Mate 20 Pro produces oversharpened images with slightly smudged details. Pixel 3 on the other hand does better in details but noise level in shadows is frustratingly high, and it clearly has narrower dynamic range. Mate 20 Pro also seems to have more quality optics than Pixel 3: better corner-to-corner sharpness and far less lens flares.

-Mate 20 Pro's Night Mode should be used only when you're in a really dark condition. With this mode you'll get better dynamic range than with auto, but I think the tradeoff, which is a loss in detail, is too much for what you get in return. I'm starting to sick of Huawei being lazy with the processing, it's time for them to realise that many people are not fan of an overly processed oil painting-like photo.

-Pixel's Night Sight produces delivers better details than its auto along with significantly reduced noises, but has a tendency to overexpose the light sources. And to me that automatic white balance correction is just as annoying as detail smudging on Huawei's Night Mode. What kind of camera turns an amber light bulb into a white fluorescent lamp? Stuff their so called "AI" colour balance correction, just give us the closest to what we see with our own eyes!

-IMO Night Mode produces better photo than Night Sight when both phones are mounted on a tripod. In the last scene Mate 20 Pro and Pixel 3 handle highlights equally well, but shadow areas are far better rendered with Mate 20 Pro.. plus, the right side of the frame is really soft on Pixel, but it's tack sharp on Mate. This is exactly the type of processing I want to see from Huawei's handheld Night Mode and I hope things will change to the right direction on P30.

That fillament shot of Mate is just mind blowing otherwise Pixel seems to be a bit better
