The mate 20 pro kicked total ass in auto mode and that tripod shot of the filament lamp was so epic especially seeing it side by side to the same shot handheld. I'd take a darker overall shot with better controlled highlights than a brighter noisier shot with slightly more detail because i won't be zooming into these shots anyways. The mate wins it for me plus it has the ultra wide angle to use the same features on

Both phones are doing well in night mode no doubt about it, but why Sony XZ2 Premium is not there in comparison. It should be Pixel 3 vs Mate 20 Pro vs XZ2 Premium.
Not more realistic, too grainy, colors not looks real etc arguments are not worth here, cause only three of the master piece Smart Phones in the world can do this job right now. When there are more phones with same capabilities that kind of arguments are worth. You should not ask any question when at least you can capture and keep your memories when none other phones are providing such shots.
And by the way this is called innovation, where are crapple fan boys? Ask your be loved Apple to do such innovation in smart phones and then ask for $1000 plus :)

Their both great. Have to say that overall I have been really enjoying the Pixel. Night mode will be released shortly as only beta version is available currently as was talking to google support this week. In any case good to both. Pixel 3 compact hardware is clean and beautiful.

2019: The year of low light beasts
Budget phones are surely about to get such capabilities, just as Portrait Mode worked out quite well even on most mid rangers.

Anonymous, 23 Nov 2018"computational photography", "AI", buzzwords to say "we're ... moreI'd take an improved crap than just a crap
Besides, how are they crap in the first place? These cameras can see more in the dark than our eyes can, so if these are 'crap,' then what do you call our eyes then?

Looking at photo toll here xz2compact wins, wish it was more representative if these night modes are so great. Not that I would choose it over colors from xperia, just compare xz2premium low light samples with them. No matter the processing, it won't help the colors, wish they used some 2mp big sensor instead, at least for colors and combine it with details from main sensor if needed, detail wise its the same after processing after all.

Please double check your tripod or your Pixel 3 is updated. It does detect tripod use and increases exposure per frame up to 1s. This is true even on the Pixel 2. And mentioned in the Google AI blog on the subject if you want a source.
"If the camera is being stabilized (held against a wall, or using a tripod, for example), the exposure of each frame is increased to as much as one second. In addition to varying per-frame exposure, we also vary the number of frames we capture, 6 if the phone is on a tripod and up to 15 if it is handheld. These frame limits prevent user fatigue (and the need for a cancel button). Thus, depending on which Pixel phone you have, camera selection, handshake, scene motion and scene brightness, Night Sight captures 15 frames of 1/15 second (or less) each, or 6 frames of 1 second each, or anything in between."
