Camera comparison: Huawei P30 Pro vs S10+, iPhone XS, Pixel 3, Mi 9, Mate 20 Pro

27 March 2019
Huawei's been bringing us some of the most meaningful camera innovations in smartphones over the past few years, experimenting with monochrome modules, image stacking, and night mode, off the top of our heads. The Huawei P30 Pro is now official and it's got a new trick up its sleeve - a periscope telephoto camera.

Ruskamyrsky, 03 Jul 2019"(Dual SIM, huge battery, storage expansion, IR blaster, et... moreThe P30 Pro's learning capable IR blaster enables you to control any appliance: any brand of TV's, CD/DVD/BD players, karaoke players, satellite or cable tv boxes, audio amplifiers/ receivers, air conditioning units, electric fans, etc. for as long as the appliance has a traditional remote control (operated via infrared - the signal generated by that led bulb like thingy you see on any remote).

Using a USB thumb drive for 'storage expansion' is NOT the same as built in 'micro sd expansion'. Firstly, because of the limited functionality of thumb drives (can't move phone apps to thumb drives, can't have them always attached as they are bulky and risk/accelerate damage to the usb port as the dangling thumb drive increases chances of inadvertently mangling the usb port); Secondly, because a thumb drive is prone to data loss, dropping/misplacement or damage and easy unauthorized personal data access (you can't encrypt it if you use it as OTG) and you cant encrypt it as adoptable storage) and lastly, because micro SD's now have 1 TB storage options (and soon, 2TB) with people buying micro SD more than thumb drives which have limited usability (can't be used in other electronic equipment like game consoles, camcorders, digital cameras, etc.). Thumb drives are becoming irrelevant to phone owners whose phones have huge micro sd storage.

Manran, 30 Jun 2019Huawei p30 is better than entry level Dslr cameras, but not... moreActually, no. No smartphone camera is better than an APS-C dSLR no matter how much YouTubers would like you to believe, not even by the wildest stretch of your or those YouTubers' imagination, unless if you only use the mediocre kit lens and don't know how to make use of a dSLR's full potential because you only use it in full auto mode when capturing photos and videos.

What benefits does one get from IR blaster? What is IR blaster?

For backuping some files, Pixel 3 can perhaps be connected to a USB stick via USB port, but I haven't tried that with either Huawei or Pixel yet, as I haven't yet bought a USB stick that has the right type of USB connector so I could connect it to a smartphone!

I don't know can one also connect an Iphone to USB stick for backups?

Shui8, 04 Apr 2019To each their own, i respect your opinion. However pixel pe... moreActually, what sets apart phone cameras from one another is the image quality and retention of fine detail at 100% crop, most especially in challenging low light situations.

Call it pixel peeping or whatever you want but you don't compare phone camera qualities by looking at photos fully zoomed out in a phone, phablet, or tablet. Otherwise, you won't see much difference between a camera phone with good photo quality over one with average, excellent, poor, or horrible photo quality.

Having said that, I'd like to confirm what I stated earlier in this thread, and it is no longer solely based on Gsmarena's low light photo samples here, but also now based on my actual comparisons with a real P30 Pro phone and my 2016 android phone with ported GCam with night sight installed: That really, Google camera's night sight is superior to the P30 Pro's night mode or any auto mode on the P30 Pro for that matter, regardless of whether the P30 Pro is shooting at 40 megapixels or 10 megapixels. The detail retention from my phone with Google's GCam with night sight installed is just way better with superior color, superior fine detail and overall, better image quality. I was a skeptic about GCam's Night Sight capability but after having tried it extensively on my phone and after having compared it side by side with the P30 Pro for exactly the same low light scene, I can truly say, there's no comparison. The P30 Pro uses super high ISO's while GCam uses much lower ISO settings but with multiple frame merging. It's really short of astounding for a 2016 smartphone to outperform the 2019 P30 Pro in low light and Google deserves credit for that. Sure both are still rubbish compared to a dSLR's low light photo output with f/1.4 prime lens installed and auto HDR enabled, but hey, this is short of revolutionary for a smartphone with really small sensor size compared to a dSLR's huge APS-C or full frame sensor. To be fair though, the P30 Pro does capture scenes faster owing to its tendency to shoot at mind boggling, detail smearing high ISO's. Maybe a future software update will make it comparable to the
GCam output. (I doubt that though because phone manufacturers would rather want you to buy their newest phone model instead with the new camera software.)

Given my positive experience with Google's GCam night sight then, (even if I didn't own a Pixel phone), would I change my mind and
now recommend the Pixel 3/3XL over the P30 Pro? Sorry, but it's still a BIG NO. There's more to a phone than an excellent low light photo shooter. There's also manual camera modes to contend with, zoom capability, the presence of triple cameras (for photographic flexibility), and a host of many other phone features to also consider in the package (Dual SIM, huge battery, storage expansion, IR blaster, etc.) which the Pixel 3/3XL is sorely lacking given its premium price, but which the P30 Pro has. So there, that's just my opinion and you don't have to agree with it.

Great comparison, but they still have a long way to beat the old masters of Nokia 808 PureView and the Nokia Lumia 1020. Heck, even a Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL can beat some of the phones here.

Night mode and super zoom capability is another story for another day.

To be more precise, a test like this, has to be made in manual mode with same ISO, shutter speed or similar - when you shoot in auto and this changes a lot ... mmmmhhh, the result varies a lot ! Will take more time, of course :)
