Camera comparison: Huawei P30 Pro vs S10+, iPhone XS, Pixel 3, Mi 9, Mate 20 Pro

27 March 2019
Huawei's been bringing us some of the most meaningful camera innovations in smartphones over the past few years, experimenting with monochrome modules, image stacking, and night mode, off the top of our heads. The Huawei P30 Pro is now official and it's got a new trick up its sleeve - a periscope telephoto camera.

Pixel 3 looks great in all scenarios except the night photos, remember that it has only one lens. Xiaomi Mi 9 also delivered very decent photos. Huawei P30 pro looks on par with Samsung galaxy s10+. Nobody cares telephoto or zoom photos. Bring the Nokia 9 Pureview.

Anonymous, 28 Mar 2019Yeah, everyone owns a phone tripod and brings it on nights ... morewell 'all' those people that do are getting the most out of their equipment, and the others accept mediocrity, we must all choose our own path.

What is clearly missing here is a comparison of Zoomed shots at X2 which is equivalent to a 50mm focal length in 35mm, kind of the sweet spot for many photos.
Would the P30 pro not be the winner there???

Is this the best 2018 and 2019 smartphone cameras can do? They're all still horrible in low light detail retention. Too much edge enhancement, excessive high and medium frequency sharpening and aggressive noise reduction. Save your money. Keep your old 2016-2017 smartphone with you. Better spend that money on a dSLR with prime lens or a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, or an advanced compact with 1" sensor like the RX100 V.

Pete L, 28 Mar 2019Why wasn't the Nokia 9 Pureview included in the comparison?... moreAnd strong oversharpening halo around edges & clarity boost in daytime, abysmal details in low light.

In real life it will perform so much worse than what's shown in the chart.

Soon Huawei will release a bullet proof smartphone, mark my word!

interesting in lg g8 and v50 camera tests. comming soon I hope.

The Mi9 and the P30 Pro have strangely blue to purple banding in the sky. Their colour science distributes colour between blue skies in blue and purple.

In some photos the P30 Pro, the Huawei P20 Pro, the S10 look a little out of focus, rendering fine details not as finely.

The interesting bit is that the difference between the various cameras is extremely little. Meaning that most camera phones in the top 10 positions are very similar in detail and dynamic range (even colour science), and only vary noticeably in things like low light and zoom capabilities.

Which probably means that atleast another 10 years (or never) before smartphone cameras start challenging DSLRs/Mirrorless and atleast another 5 years before they challenging Point&Shoot cameras.

The Sky ... moreNahhh its because starting Mate 20, Huawei revised the color science to more natural. Samsung & Pixel tends to add some vibrancy into colors, but not to the extend we called oversaturate.

There is Leica Vivid & Smooth color mode on P30, if u want the images to look popping out.

I think if I ever wanted to buy one of these, I would go in for the Mi9 and save a few hundred bucks. Yes I mean the P30 pro is great in zoom and the details are much sharper, but then who really wants to take pictures 5x zoomed in? Maybe once in a while. But for most of the time we want to capture what we see and I think the Mi9 does a very decent job.

GSM could you please take the picture of the stars.

I wonder if Richard (Huawei CEO) presentation that only P30 can take a picture of stars were true. It's looks too DSLR.

I hope you also bring other phone such as xiaomi mi 9 to test to take picture with stars.
