I think you made mistake because you used 4x zoom on Huawei P30 Pro for comparison...4x ist digital zoom on P30 Pro not optical like on Sasmung. You should have used 5x on P30Pro for the right quality.

Personally I don't use zoom much, so not on my priority list. That's why I stick with S9, as s10 didn't improve still images (had the same main camera as S9). Hope this will change with S20/S20+ (at last on paper they should be much better).

Also Sony will present a 48MP 1/1.33 new sensor.

Nick Tagataka, 26 Feb 2020Flagship phones don't NEED night modes to take a good quali... moreMy point was discussing how technology process or better yet proper implementation. S20 Ultra went with pixel binning (9in1) same as 808 did (5in1 for 8MP, 8in1 for 5MP output). From what I see (comparing to Note 10), I'm not impressed at all. It's a minor, incremental (at best) upgrade comparing to Sammy's last year's flagship.

As for flash, nothing compares to Xenon simply due to its speed (10ms) so no truetone, quadtone LED or whatever marketing gimmick name can't freeze a moment as Xenon does.

As for S9, I mentioned it as I'm using it right now, I didn't see any point "upgrading" to same main camera in S10 trio last year. That's why I'm quite excited about S20 review.

As for Sony, historically speaking, I wouldn't have high hopes - they can make some of the best sensors in the industry for sure, but their Image processing sux. I'm not sure if this is part of Sony's strategy to keep their smartphones out of regular camera competition. I do like new Xperia very much, maybe I'll wait for camera review as well. However, with just announced pricing for Europe (around 1,200 EUR) makes it pretty much DOA.

                Regards,

I'm really disappointed with the color reproduction, looking those blue skies is a nightmare, it's just oversaturated.

I didn't expect the Mi Note 10 to perform better than the Ultra. Considering that it had major issues with photos with its underwhelming chipset.

The comparison to perform is within the Mi 10 Pro and the S20 Ultra. That would be a neck in neck competition.

miki69, 26 Feb 2020Low light as well if you have steady hands. And for the rec... moreFlagship phones don't NEED night modes to take a good quality night time photo. They are entirely optional and exist only to improve the image quality even further when there's not much movement in the frame. Lumia 1020 fares decently unless it's extreme low light thanks to the combination of OIS and large BSI sensor. Nokia 808? Not so much. Good luck toning down badly clipped highlights and bringing up noisy shadows in the post.
On top of that, old Nokia phones don't even have auto HDR to achieve correct exposure, so unless natural detail during the day is the factor and the only factor one is looking for, it's really hard for me to recommend them to other person. Not a lot you can do on those devices to properly expose the scene under harsh lightings.

Also funny you're bringing up S9 here - Pixel 4, Mate 30 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro, even Xperia 1 (or upcoming Xperia 1 Mk.II) take far more usable indoor shots than that 2 year old Galaxy. Sensors got larger, image processing got faster and smarter in last few years: it doesn't really make sense to talk about it in this situation.

Nick Tagataka, 26 Feb 2020I'm fairly certain all manufacturers that are using Sony's ... moreStraight to the point! I don't see any benefit of having more than 48/64MP in 1/1.33" sensor size.
You can have nice implementation of 4-in-1 that will give a true benefit to end users. Everything above like 9-in-1, 16-in-1 will be a mess with current technology, resulting in either messy shots or blurry ones. Let's see what will Huawei bring to the table with P40

And for the record, it doesn't need 4-8 secs exposure for "night mode" shots like modern smartphones. As for daylight shots, most of modern phones add an artificial sharpening making forest, trees, grass look like an artifact. 808 was as close to real deal cameras as it gets, as world around us is no as shart as phones try to present it, it is more "smooth".
Good you have mentioned flash, as 7-8 years have passed and no one was able to implement Xenon flash, making most low light indoor shots useless/blurry especially with large group of people in the frame. Btw, I do have S9 and did numerous comparisons with 808 in various lighting conditions. As said, you may need to take several shots with 808 to avoid blurry ones, but those good one are beyond any comparison with S9. Sadly, it doesn't make much of a difference when you send them to your friends via whatsapp/viber, so I do understand that form has beaten function, but still...

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to S20 review, to see if its larger (almost 2X) sensor will beat by significant margin S9/S10.

Nothing comes close to Nokia 808 daytime photos in Creative mode (8MP). The only downside, it doesn't have OIS which makes night shots blurry (or you get high % of blurry shots). Daytime images are simpy amazing even by today's standards as it doesn't employ artificial sharpening. I agree it's an old phone and basically useless for anything BUT photography - but it does it amazingly well even today. As a matter of fact I hope someone will do S20 Ultra vs 808 comparison to see how (or if) technology has advanced for the last 7 years.

I still use Nokia 808 for daytime photos (as it doesn't have OIS) and was expecting something really WOW from S20 Ultra. Obviously (aside from zoom) it's nothing to write home about.
