Sony Xperia 1 II review

I'm hoping the battery life is the biggest saving grace here. We already saw the pattern where every Sony halo flagship battery life turns out better in every iteration.
Z5 Premium (3430 mAh, 20nm SD810) -> 66hr ER
XZ Premium (3230 mAh, 10nm SD835) -> 72hr ER (+6hr)
XZ2 Premium (3540 mAh, 10nm SD845) -> 77hr ER (+5hr)
1 Mark I (3330 mAh, 7nm SD855) -> 79hr ER (+2hr)
1 Mark II (4000 mAh, 7nm+ SD865 5G) -> ?
BTW, the comment section is similar to the one to XZ2 Premium where negativity outperforms positivity, where Xperia 1 comment section is similar to the one to XZ Premium where positivity is much louder than negativity. A pattern again? Sigh...

Anonymous, 30 May 2020Just asking for it.
You can hide the cutoff/notch.Then what’s the purpose of having it in the first place?
A screen portion that cannot be used is a massive waste of usable surface area.
They shouldn’t have existed in the first place. Contents are made to maximize the whole display, and then we get these phones that goes against that purpose. What a lame joke.

Anonymous, 30 May 2020No one picked up the dynamic vibration feature though. Even... moreObviously because only Sony offers such feature like on their PS4 DualShock Controller.
One feature not being picked up by the others doesn’t make an excuse for doing so for the other features. Even the glass sandwich design of most modern smartphones today, which started with the iPhone 4, was designed by Sony in the past, so technically they still pioneered this aesthetic “for smartphones.”
You treat it as an entertainment simply because you can’t digest the fact that what I’m saying reflects the reality. Glad you’ve enjoyed it though, so stay there in your fantasy world for longer. I understand your need for happiness, and it so happened to be in that world you’ve made up in your mind, :)))

Thank you GSM I postponed my preorder.
Dimm screen, battery issues, speaker loudness etc.
It does not make for a worthy or more meaningful upgrade to my current Xperia.
I mean jack is awesome as usual (yet I already own Tempotec) and cameras are a bit better but that is a realy weak excuse for an upgrade.
That zv-1 looks much more interesting, even if less flexible, than this solution.
Thank you, those battery issues are most concerning, even with all those delays Sony were not able to finish software and fix issues. That does not really give a confidence in current state and even the future one with upgrades (if any) released.

To be honest, I rather wait for Android Headlines to review Xperia 1 II after seeing the unprecedented warzone here. It's, unbearable honestly...

After all those facts I stated, this is all what you have to say?
Well, given your replies to other comments, I don’t really expect anything useful from you at all. But nice try though, boredom could really make us do stupid things at times eh.

Anonymous, 30 May 2020Another stupidly stretched overpriced phone by Sony :(
W... moreXperia 5 & the future successor, Xperia 5 II is your nearest Compact offer from Sony after the Compact series was declared finished.
.
Sony already discontinued the Compact lineup after the sales of Compact were never higher than intended, even smaller than vanilla and Premium lineup. The dwindling sales of XZ2 Compact shot down Compact series to its termination.

Reluctantly read this review.
Imho I suggest you to add a new page such as "unique features" in addition to to-do-list gsmarena standard boring review

ok so you ditched the 3.5mm jack quality test, but please reinstate the loudness test. phones might all have great quality specs from the 3.5mm plug but they all have different loudness, so please test it.

superpup, 30 May 2020I don't think it's a clear bias, so much as this site needs... moreMost phones are just the same however.. so that is understandable.
But check the more odd phones like rog phone 2 , they did quite a different test there. Which was good.
Is Sony odd enough? Maybe.

People don't want their phone to only take decent photos in Pro mode, phones have replaced point-and-shoot cameras because they rake good enough photos without extra effort.
If we have to fiddle about, finding the right app out of the 3 installed, then spend time setting the camera up how are we going to take those instant memory photos we're trying to capture?

Nick.B, 30 May 2020We don't trash Sony. Sony let us down on screen. Fact. They... moreAgree. I use xperia 1 for my aily and the screen is great and gorgeous, I don't care much about HRR, but the lack of brightness is a bit annoying outdoor (especially if you put some glass protector)

Anonymous, 30 May 2020No one picked up the dynamic vibration feature though. Even... moreTrue, i use both xperia 1 and xz2. The dynamic vibration is cool, but then i almost never really use it for anything (maybe when watching some music videos, but it's very rare). It gives good haptic feedback, but other than that, quite annoying especially when it vibrates when you're using your phone while listening to some music.

Not the screen itself. It is very good. But not great which we expected. Sony is not the next Chinese brand and now Chinese got better (s.korean) screen than both Samsung and Sony phones (big guns). Chinese prevail

Shui8, 30 May 2020To me it seems like half-baked review. All major features o... moreYou're not wrong. Sony Xperia 1ii (and i think as well as 1 and 5) are aimed to be used by professionals photographers and videographers. The features that being tweaked and put inside this phone is something that pro's might need and able to utilize. That's why a lot of professionals praise this phone. For me, I like these festures since it suits my need and I always want to have similar experince as my a7iii on my phone.
On the other hand, GSMARENA reviews this phone from regular users perspective, which if I'm honest, won't really know how to use the Photo Pro app properly (maybe only in auto). Plus there are a lot of aspects and features that haven't been optimized yet, so maybe they're waiting for that to be done
