AnonD-894375, 18 Jun 2020Wow, so you mean manufacturer are wasting money on your so ... more"Manufacturers waste money on different glass surfaces, gradients" - definitely, yes.
"Consumers are swayed by looks" - because they were taught to be swayed. How would companies use different looks to sell more products if it wouldn't work? So they made it work, e.g. through advertisement.
"Why modern smartphone don't come in simple colors or in plastic" - actually, some of them do; usually cheaper ones, because creating looks require paid work (even if it's a pointless work) and cheaper smartphones are easier to sell, because you don't need to convince people to spend big bucks, only to choose exactly your product.
And how to convince people to spend big bucks on more expensive products? Either to ensure you make that good of a product so it worth that money (as Apple does) or to make up some "premium" thingy that allegedly worth that money.. just because (as some of others do, e.g. Samsung with curved screens).

Most of it is screen (with notch so it's not so aesthetic) and black bar around it. Edges? They are just [not always] monotone colored metal. Back? It's just monotone colored piece of glass. In fact, most people wear cases on phones so edges and back aren't even seen. So, is there any appearance that worth mentioning as a reason to buy an iPhone?
And, yeah, I respect Apple for that, they don't make fancy appearances for most of their products; it even may be called "an absence of appearance", and that is great.

You can twist all you one, but it is a fact that many consumer are swayed by look. If look ain't important, then why are modern smartphone doesn't come in simple color or in plastic? Plastic has benefit over glass in many areas which I have stated.

People are just taught to think about "part of fashion" and such nonsense. Actually smartphones don't need to have various appearances as it doesn't give them more functionality. And customization (which by itself is kinda overrated) is possible through cases, vinyl skins, aerography, etc.

Btw, iPhones don't have curved screen - maybe because Apple understands (at least for now) something about convenience and practicality?

Smartphone or even phone for that matter has always been part of the fashion, otherwise you will only see one design. And if it is not important, smartphone will be better made with plastic, its cheaper, more durable and lighter than glass.

RC255, 18 Jun 2020If you read the review, your questions would be answered. T... moreWhat's the problem in making narrower phone with narrower flat screen? Instead of making it inconvenient, impractical, more expensive, more vulnerable, less repairable?
"for little to no image distortion" - no, there is image distortion and glares on edges of curved screens.
Btw, Meizu numerously made phones with side bezels as thin as ~2 mm on each side - without curving the display. If Meizu did this - anyone should be able to. So, the "argument" of making phones narrower is lame.

The curved screen is actually beneficial to some as it makes the phone easier to hold by being narrower at the sides and offering a larger screen on a narrower device for little to no image distortion, this coming from someone using an 1+ 7 Pro rather than people who've never used one.

Anonymous, 18 Jun 2020Aesthetics are important. Curved displays look premium.Aesthetics are not important at all for consumer electronics (smartphones, computers, gaming consoles, etc).
"Premium" has no value.
Curved displays look stupid because of their inconvenience and impracticality which are unacceptable for any consumer electronics, especially smart_phones.

Yourdaddy, 18 Jun 2020Haters gonna hate! What a big problem, curved display! Serios? We, sane people, are neither "haters", nor "fans" of anything. Curved display is inconvenient, impractical feature. Consumer electronics, especially smart_phones, must not have any impracticality at all.

Anonymous, 18 Jun 2020The "alternatives" section is using the wrong Realme phone.... moreRealme X2 has no IR Blaster and no FM Radio, so not exactly the same spec-for-spec. These are important for some users.
I'd go for this Xiaomi, but the missing SD card is a deal breaker for me.
That's why I chose MI9 Lite instead (and Redmi K30).

So 64mp (the same sensor in the Motorola Edge "lite" flagship) is called a downgrade?
Remember when just over a year ago Samsung and iPhones had 12mp as the standard? lol.

The "alternatives" section is using the wrong Realme phone.
The Realme X2 is the correct competitor for this, it's almost exactly the same spec-for-spec, you gain a better camera and SD card slot, and give up 20% of the battery size, but save a bunch of money.
