Asus Zenfone 8 review

I would highly recommend anyone looking into getting an Asus Zenfone mobile phone to think twice. After 18 months of it being one of the better phones I've used, it suddenly bricked while taking a photo. Completely non responsive. Won't turn on, various combinations of the power button and the volume up and down buttons do nothing, the phone feels warm when it's plugged in to a charger but the LED charging light does not turn on and no matter how long it sits on the charger it's still completely non responsive. Tried plugging it into a computer and still no response. Asus response: send it away (across the other side of the country) to repair it but it's outside of warranty so it'll be at your own expense and oh by the way we don't do any data recovery so all your precious family photos and important documents that were saved on your phone? Yeah those are gone, but we're "sorry for the inconvenience". This is a common attribute amongst the Zenfone 8's.

Great phone. One of the best phones I have bought and will remain in the top 10 phones in my life. It checked almost all the boxes in my requirement lists and so I decided to buy it even though it was expensive. Wish Asus had provided more OS and security updates.

AnonD-836132, 14 May 2021RIP Sony. ASUS Zenfone 8 just killed your compact lineup. And 2 years later, Asus has planned to kill the compact form factor of Zenfone in upcoming Zenfone 10 to 6.3" meanwhile Sony still keeps its Xperia 5's 6.1" until right now while getting smaller every iteration, so... Asus also axed their compact flagship.

xmanfit0, 13 May 2021The Xperia 5 ii retails for $900 unlocked right now. It... moreAnd the upcoming Zenfone 10 will lose its compact form factor and increase the screen to 6.3" after staying for 2 years and yet Xperia 5 series even getting smaller every time while keeping mostly the same design, so... even Asus know compact flagship isn't feasible. So yeah, from the future lol

Owlenchantress, 14 Dec 2022Worst phone ever.
Screen lighting is awful and auto adjust... moreThis is very strange because I never had issues with the things you pointed out.
Wifi is good. Never had an issue with the auto brightness sensor. It's really good. Never had to manually adjust the brightness.
The camera is "fine". Nothing special, tends to over-process the photos in some occasions.
Battery life is not very good which is to be expected with SD888 and 4000mAh battery.

Worst phone ever.
Screen lighting is awful and auto adjust never works.
WiFi is glitchy and often does not load basic stuff.
Cameras are horrible.
These reviews are new outta box, they don't reflect actual use. 1 year on the 8 and had to buy a phone that actually works.

All in all, what I would add/change to make this device Ideal is :
Move the punch hole to the centre (no chrome bezel).
Add IR Blaster.
Add telephoto lense.
Replace 888 cpu with 870.
Replace usb 2 with usb 3.

SigmaR, 08 Oct 2021Maybe it is overkill, for now. But it makes it more future proofNot really, it's impractical since the cpu cannot be used at full power in this compact chasis without frying the board. It would really help asus market share to re-release the zenfone 8 with the 870 cpu under a new name "zenfone 8x" for a slightly lower retail price

Almost, 21 Jan 2022It's almost perfect but bro, the battery life is too s... moreBattery is as big as they can put in a 5.9 inch chassis, along with beefy 888 chip with lot of cooling. You have to sacrifice somewhere: Pixel 5 has same battery size in the same body, it has wireless charging, but oh well now there isn't enough space for a flagship chipset.

The battery is a bit low in capacity but this is not a big problem. The real problem is the phone lowers the ring volume and I miss calls! I've tried all options but alas ... no success. Maybe the reason is that I accidentally press the volume key but up to now, such a thing didn't happen to any of my previous phones.
