Tom209, 03 Dec 2022I'm based within the EU. It doesn't require a... moreI lived through NOKIA also, and had Siemens, Alcatel and Samsung too. I actually cared more about siemens devices, they were better, in a lot of areas then Nokia devices at the time when it comes to featurephones. Siemens ME45 being the highlight of phone quality and nice software, way ahead of what nokia delivered at that time. But none compared with my first smartphone tough the Nokia 3650. No matter if nokia or otheres, since i first got my hands on a used one in 2003, was all only a Smartphone party for me, and yes what Nokia delivered was great, but not always. They had some crappy featurephones and their first touchscreen to compete with apples first phone, (that was not a smartphone in any way possible), was not a great experience, especially the cheapper version, not the premium one. So Nokia was not all only bells and whistles.
Going to hmd, i do not know how much you exagerate here, but was very obvious and everywhere spoken who makes the new android devices, hack even on the box and on the back of any phone there is clearly writen "designed by hmd OY". Anyway, i also owned and now got back to me after hitting the toillet and going rouge, the Nokia 8, used it for 2 years and gave it to my sister after i bought nokia 9. I never had a problem in thouse two years with that device, my sister used it also for about 2 and a half years before hitting the toilet, and she also had no problems with it, actually, quoting her "was the best device she ever had" since the smartphone for the mass era started. So yeah, when you have problems with a device, take it back and let it there, sunday morning devices will always exist. I am aware though that the nokia 8 had a few batches with wierd problems, never heard of call problems tough...
I do not know Nokia 6.1 because i did not have it, somebody in my family had it, but i do not recall if this person complained about it or not, so with that devices i am out, but because you claim that all your hmd nokia devices are soo bad, while i bag to differ, either you are a very unlucky person and everytime got the sunday morning device, or you are a troll and exagerate the problems you read on the internet, pretty much what a lot of trolls here do. A thing i could also do in xiaomi, redmi, and any other brand comment sections, complains about wierd behaviour in devices is actually with each and every device that is or was relesed. Going to G60, lf you really have the device, why not taking it back? And why did you bought another nokia when your past experience was sooo "bad" while having experiemce with chinese "brands" that you call way better?
It is quite hard to close my eyes on that claim and not call it fraud/ lie.
Anyway, let's pretend you are having one and you have those problems, send it back and buy another G60 and see the difference, if the second one is the same, while i strongly doubt, then let another member of your family buy your devices. Might make a big difference😅. Letting jokes asside, for me the call quality is also very important, for my sister even more, and in this cryteria i really have no complains from the brand, software bugs? Yeah, but call quality and coverage was not something i can complain about. Having members of the family that owned or own Nokia 6.2, nokia 7.2, nokia x10 nokia x20 and me switching from nokia 9 to x30, i can safetley say that none of us have call quality problems or had, so yeah there is that again... Also, no serious bugs to break the deal. My x30 has some wierd behaviour when picture in picture and 60hz refresh rate is forced uppon the screen, but will get fixed of corse. At 90hz it does not have that behaviour. I do not use the 90HZ refresh rate, because i care more about the battery life then those gimmiks. Call quality is the same like with all of the devices i've owed. actually the x30 is much more stable then nokia 9 at its release, and that device got way better in time, it was released with some serious bugs, that upset some people, but i am a patient man. And am the happy owner of the device for 3 and a half years now. Still kinckin and use it as "the work device".
The past can influence the future, but not always, taking germany as an example that went from as low as possible to beeing one of the most powerfull lands in europe. So yeah, the will of the people can make a huge difference no matter what their past is. Always accusing others for your problems, will never make a change in the future. Not talking about you here, talking in general.

Carol, 01 Dec 2022Ignorance? Why? Cause i do not live in the past? Don't... moreI'm based within the EU.

It doesn't require a high IQ in order to deduce that the past impacts the present and the future - especially in terms of manufacturing and the standards held within this sector.

I loved Nokia. I still want to love them. They were at the forefront of innovation & design, and my entire childhood is riddled with Nokia nostalgia, but HMD have tarnished their name, image & reputation by releasing grossly sub standard handsets, when compared to the competition (regardless of what countries the competition stems from).

A company (Nokia) that once released cutting edge devices and cutting edge designs has now been reduced to barely playing catch up, and offering mediocre tech and specs. This isn't something I can accept, especially considering who and what Nokia once was and stood for.

I lived through the 6110 and 5110 era, and purchased so many of their devices. Every device I owned was a Nokia through the 90's and 2000's, all the way through to the Lumia series.

They were so innovative, especially with their designs. The 3250, the E61, the classic banana phone, the changeable front covers of the 5110, the futuristic 7600. All amazing devices and such high quality and durability.

A Nokia back then NEVER once failed me. The battery, the reception, call volume, call quality, loudspeaker volume etc - all class leading and impeccable.

However things took a sharp immediate downturn when I purchased the Nokia 8.

It was riddled with problems. It was in repair 3 times. It didn't feel like a Nokia to me at all. It was an atrocious device, and I sensed something was wrong. But I continued to remain loyal, and purchased the 6.1 & 8.1.

Again, the quality was absolutely hideous, and I was utterly shocked. The software was plagued with bugs, and there were manufacturing faults. I knew then that something was actually gravely wrong. I researched and realised these devices weren't actually Nokia, but were HMD.

I immediately branched out and turned to other manufacturers to see what was on offer. Since I've done this, I've realized the huge difference in quality & price, and also even the very basics such as call and reception quality, display quality, touch screen response, sound and volume, are all at a higher standard than any of the previous HMD devices I've owned.

An example, setting a basic wake alarm on the G60 - the sound of the alarm = tinny, barely audible and such awful low quality. When compared to a Realme 9 pro or motorola G62 - both are very loud, clear, sharp and do the required intended function. Actually wake you up.

Even call volume via a headset. The Nokia 8, 6.1, 8.1 & G60 - volume levels are unacceptable.

I know that young people don't really think much of these basic functions such as sound volume, call volume etc - but to older people like me, these are very important just as much as the display tech, ram and processor.

These types of very basic core features shed an immense light on the actual quality of a product, and of the care & consideration that is taken into the design.

HMD are doing and have done an extreme disservice to the Nokia name, and they have not improved since the Nokia 8, judging by their recent efforts.

Muthu, 30 Nov 2022I assumed you are from India and did not realize that the s... moreIt's ok, and you're welcome Muthu 😊

The biggest downside to non-competitive markets is that you don't get good value for money.
For example, the Nokia 5.4 and Poco M3 with similar specs and same or similar configurations retail for the same price, with the only differences being stock Android with better cameras on the Nokia 5.4 and the Poco M3 with a 1080p display, no ultrawide camera and MIUI with a price difference upto $30 in competitive markets. And the realme C11 2021 with the same price tag as the Nokia C21 Plus, where the Nokia has a fingerprint scanner and higher RAM compared to the C11, while the C11 has a nice-looking finish to it. Another example is the Nokia G11 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy M02s (which is 2 years from launch now) being sold at the same price with a massive difference in specs. The X30 and the Moto Edge 30 Neo being sold at the same price is a bit too hard to swallow too.
And the S22 Ultra that retails for the exact same price as the OnePlus 10 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 9 with the same price as the Galaxy S10 is also worth noting.

It's all about the brand loyalty here in our particular market since the same parent company retails every single phone brand unfortunately. And the import taxes, as well as inflation are high here, so we use our phones for as long as we can use them.

In case you noticed, I had recommended the X30 to someone in the comment section using a Galaxy J5, which is 7 years old at this day and age (imagine using a phone with low end specs for 7 years!), because you aren't saving any money by choosing a viable alternative. If someone says that the already high price is good, chances are that person is also from a non-competitive market.

And the fact that there aren't many GSMArena users from non-competitive markets, so it would be difficult for them to buy phones based on GSMArena user comments and reviews, so I try my best to help them 😁

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2022You know about Eco-Vadis? Only 2 phone companies got platin... moreEco based "principles" are nothing more than a marketing stamp to appease to the current trend of "environmental sustainability".

It's currently in vogue, and what the media want people to hear.

This allows these manufacturers to increase their prices as a result of their "portrayed" sustainability efforts, but this is nothing more than an outright fallacy.

I like to dig beneath the surface when researching companies, because once you do, you'll realize there is a reason why HMD outsource their production to China, India, Vietnam etc, and don't manufacturer in the EU.

It's all due to cheap labour/costs.

If true authentic sustainability was considered, they wouldn't be shipping parts from all over the world (carbon footprints), and they would pay EU employees EU pay rates, in EU production sites, and then sell to EU/Worldwide customers at EU costs, acquiring EU profits.

Once this is achieved, then I'd be impressed, as this is true authenticity, otherwise currently, it's all gimmicks and gaslighting.

The reason we have "cheap" labour to even begin with in countries like China and India, is due to the West's involement, politically, financially and often atrociously, as documented in history books. (Are you even familiar with events such as the opium wars or colonization related topics?)

It's utter hypocrisy how western countries are now calling out low working conditions/forced labour, when they were the ones that initially set these standards, expectations, and engraved this type of work related culture in eastern countries, which continues to this day and has unfortunately become synonymous with manufacturing.

What's comical is that even HMD devices are "designed" by ODM's in China, as referenced in articles years ago.

What I value is innovation, especially in terms of the complex relationship between technology and health implications.

Companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor etc actually factor in health concerns when developing and designing devices, as we're recently seeing with implementations of DC dimming modes, lower SAR values and Advanced eye care modes.

They also cater very well to those with health and disability conditions, with advanced accessibility options embedded in UI's for those with auditory issues (extra volume), visual issues (speech recognition and control), and advanced display color modes and configuration.

Generally, they offer all of this along with the latest technology and specifications.

None of these types of direct to consumer matters have ever been focused on by HMD in any of their devices. They can't even get the basics right, yet have some how jumped all the way into "environmental" concerns. (Even though they still include chargers and TPU cases in specific regions).

HMD have also not listened to consumers, as we continue to see underspecced underwhelming products being released. This isn't what people want, and they've been made very well aware of this for years.

Yes, the majority of smartphones manufactured in the East arrive with swathes of bloatware preinstalled, and this presents an issue, but this type of subsidiary helps keeps costs low and competitive.

Unfortunately, in this present day and age, no device is truly secure. The moment anyone uses a smartphone, they have to accept that their data is going to be shared when their device connects to the internet. This is unavoidable, however whether one is happy to share their data with America (google) or the East, it's a choice.

But it's very naive to think that HMD global/Android one devices are free of these privacy concerns or are fully "Environmentally sustainable".

The only selling point HMD have is offering an uncluttered basic UI (however this is also offered by other manufacturers, often on much better specced devices- Motorola/Pixel etc - and at a similar and often cheaper price).

The deeply invested marketing gimmick exhibited by HMD has indeed paid off, as I can see from some of the comments that people have obviously fallen for it. This allows HMD to charge high prices for cheap trash hardware, while creating a false "caring" for the "environment" image.

Asphalt-nation, 30 Nov 2022I appreciate this little essay of yours. To which I'... moreLight Co did not go bankrupt, they just left consumer imaging and now work on autonomous vehicles. The 9 PureView was for them a proof of concept brought to market, but it was flawed and they didn't get any buyers for their camera modules (Sony and Xiaomi were both potential customers).

The 9 PureView was a failed experimental device, but I still regard it as one of the best smartphones for imaging over the last few years - if you know what you're doing. It's a shame the chipset and custom ISP struggled with processing the large about of data captured which caused high power draw and unstable software.

But really, smartphone photography is a fun hobby. My 10 year old Fujifilm X-Pro1 with a kit lens and a brand new 35mm prime lens still outclasses smartphones and cost less than a flagship.

The demographics and country traffic of tech sites means certain features or issues are fixated on. It leads to very standardised ways of thinking and evaluating products.

Tom209, 30 Nov 2022I'm sensing an underhand discriminatory sentiment from... moreSuit yourself. I am not hostile or against people, i am against stupidity, wickedness and foul play, against manipulation, trash-talking with no knowlege, better said talking with no knowlege, stealing and destroying other peoples work, taking advantage of people, the List goes and on, and on. This does Not include east only but the whole world, yeah i have strong fealings against companies that do businesses the apple way. Resentiments against eastern brands? I have all my respect for Asus, Acer, Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic and many others, so Nope, i do not have resentiments against eastern brands, more like against crapp floading the markets with reverse enginiert devices , seeling them cheap to make a name. So, it has nothing to do with east, it could have been North for what i care, as long as there are no ethics and foul play they ain't going to have respect nor support from me. As for Europe, i will always support european brands, against any other as long as quality and ethics are in sync with me and what i want. If not, they go to the bin too...
