Nokia N78 preview: First Look

03 June 2008
The Nokia N78 boasts a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, Symbian OS with the latest S60 Feature pack 2, built-in GPS receiver, Wi-Fi, the intriguing Navi wheel navigation solution and an FM transmitter. All those features are enough to make it a worthy successor of the highly popular and capable Nokia N73. Of course, with a similar feature set, Nokia N82 will rival the Nokia N78.

Well NOkia is making their 2nd generation Nseries phs similar looks. Start from N82, with this N78 and N96 etc. Most of ppl think the design is boring. But for me, Nokia make the right decision. The design is clean and very futuristic. But front and especially back plastic panels should replace with metal and that will make complete design.

I've seen the build quality remarks come up in other reviews but I think the size criticism is a bit unfounded, it has a lot of stuff packed in and it's really not that big.

I had the N82 for a couple of days an the phones to plasticky i think as Nokia use to build more solid mobiles,ok the camera seems to attract people, but your not using it all the time an with me having the Black 8gb N95 the screen size an video quality on this mobile made me send the N82 back to Orange, the N78 will be built in the same sort of housing an the keypads might be big mistake from Nokia i think as the type of buttons on the old N73 would have been better on the N78 to attract people to buy it,so alot of people will be reading the reviews an thoughts about the keypad before deciding to get the N78

worst Gsm arena Preview i have ever seen in recent times.Im an SE user, and this preview has is just so rubbish.

First of all whats with weight i mean its just 101 gms compared to SE c702 which is 105gms, and n78 has more features packed in , Looks like gsm arena was in hurry or angry with nokia. And if the Gsm team doesn't live up to professional review, it would start loosing visitors.

yea your right that they are different but at the same time they are rivals and both seem to be successes of N73, both have goods and bads and about the cam; the N78 is not made a high end camera phone, if it was it would have a 5mp cam but instead its got features like FP2, navi wheel and FM transmitter and i have to say the camera quality is amazing for a 3.2 mp phone, i remember my n73's quality to be noway near this, the N78's cam quality is comparable to my N95 8GB!!! but i do agree that N82 is a better buy now in features-to-price ratio but i bet i think nokia have made it a tread to realase a High-End and Mid-End phones in the Nseries, as when Symbian 3rd came, the N93 was highend and N73 also high but came to mid, the N95 came with FP1, and N76 came with FP1 too at midend, at this time the 5700 also came with fp1 but not a nseries,

oh and GSMarena, your the best review site and my first site that i open when i come online and I LOVE the N81 LOOK, OK!!! just cause you don like it does't mean it su-ks ok!!! there are a fuk load of SE's out there that look like fuk itself look at the C902, * touch buttons around a small screen, no we don't see you fuk with that now do we???? look i'm sorry to be mean but i do love the N81 look so just say you guys did't like it and thats it ok, cool

There other big difference between the N82 & N78. The N82 runs the 332MHz CPU with dedicated 3D graphics chip while he N78 runs the 369MHz with no 3D graphics chip.

Also the free RAM is around 90mb in the N82 & around 48mb RAM in the N78.

And we also know that the N82 records vids in VGA @ 15fps while N82 does the same in 30fps...

I have to say, I agree with those below who think this (p)review was a little harsh. I was very surprised to see the GSMarena team mention the "ugliness" factor twice, which definitely put me off because I usually agree with the team so much, but I really enjoy the new N-series look. Second, I was VERY surprised to see the N78 called "bulky". Are you serious GSMarena? You know well that there is NO other handset from ANY other company with so many things (3.2 mpx camera, GPS, FM transmitter, HSDPA, AND a brilliant 2.4" screen) in a smaller package. Let's stay objective because that's what brings people to the site.

Careful: I have had an N95 8G Black for a week or so (initially to try out, but it is growing on me) and the video recording quality is excellent for a mobile - and here's the hot bit, it is at the essential 30fps (frames per second). The N78, while almost perfect, records at 15fps, and that is a major flaw. Remember folks, more and more of us are using our mobiles to capture precious memories that may be archived for viewing in the future. Therefore, purchase a phone that captures such memories in the best quality. The still and video cameras on the N95 and N82 are first rate, and that's coming from a former SE K800i user. (K800i video was pants.)

There's a problem with the Nokia n78: JUST LOOK AT THE KEYPAD! The team has every right to be sore at Nokia. The phone is bulky, ugly, and brings nothing new to the nokia table except the navi wheel. GSMARENA team, don't listen to these haters! You guys are doing a great job! As a side note though, don't make such a big deal about Nokia not sending you a test unit, it seems a bit unprofessional. Is there anyway the frequenters of this website can e-mail Nokia and let them know we rely on your reviews? Cheers!

This preview DOES sound overly harsh. Really, GSMArena - why mention that the reviewer personally dislikes the design not just once, but twice? Design is very subjective and thus has no place in an objective (p)review.

yea i kinda agree with the below guy, GSMarena you guys do seem kind of mad at nokia and it shows in this preview but on the positive side preview is great first impression thanks for the speed and thanks for comparing it to the N82 as its the main rival, thank you

Look how GSMarena testing phones. SonyEricsson provide them samples and get positive reviews where testers don't mention obvious flaws like poor build quality, soind quality, camera quality or way overpriced cost. And nokia don't do this and N78 which costs like C702 from SE but with better features got not so positive review. Shame on you, GSMarena!

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2008Buy the N82 is almost the same price and way better!I actually had the N82 for a couple months and loved it! But I'm here in the U.S. and the N82 does not have U.S. 3G capability. It was actually my experience with the N82 that has me going back to the n78. Also, I'm a music fanatic and I do a decent bit of driving, so the built in FM transmitter seems perfect for me! Thanks for the advice though, I agree that anyone looking for the best cameraphone in the world should go for the N82 (unless you NEED 850mhz and 1900mhz 3G :)
