Motorola Razr 40 Ultra review

Well, I love Motorola and I loved their original Razr from almost two decades ago - that was a futuristic feat of superb design and technology.
That being said, this 2023 Razr "ultra" is far from any kind of flagship performance (old-ish SoC, tiny 2.55" sensor, no tele, poor battery life) that it actually damages the reputation Motorola once gained through its original Razr from 2005.

Foldable Clamshell Design Tiers
S: Razr 2019, Razr 5G
A: X Flip, Razr 40 & 40 Ultra, Z Flip 3 & 4
B: Z Flip 5, Find N2 Flip, Razr 2022
C: P50 Pocket, Pocket S
D: Z Flip & 5G
My Favorite Book-Style Foldable Designs
1. Find N & N2
2. Pixel Fold
Leaning towards the first gen Find N. While it's thicker and heavier than the N2, it has the more rounded sides and wireless charging. Too bad it won't work on my AT&T prepaid unlimited plan because AT&T is picky.
Razr 40 is what the unreleased TCL foldable clamshell from 2021 should've been. The TCL flip codenamed the Chicago Project that would've been sold cheaper than the Z Flip 3 ($1000) and Razr 5G ($1400) in 2021.

Nicolas F, 02 Jun 2023I don't know maybe it's hard to justify that pric... moreThese phones are not meant for people who care about specs. It's for people who want to stand out and have that wow factor or just loved flip phones back in the day and want it back. Not everything is about the specs sheet.

Motorola are the worst for updates I owned the RAZR 2020 from new updates were so slow and far apart got 2 years of updates then no more should have learnt bought the RAZR 2022 which I totally regret I like the outer screen as I'm not a heavy phone user and didn't want to carry a brick in my pocket the last security update was April 2023 I'm still waiting for Android 13 I recommend people wait for consumer reviews of the phone and what support they are getting before you spend your hard earned money...

AnonD-546724, 02 Jun 2023I don't know maybe that's because it fold in half... moreImagine paying that much for a screen that's guaranteed to crack, a phone you can't put a case on, and specs that are already starting to age.
It's like this phone was designed for suckers that are falling for a gimmick that will slowly die out when more consumers realize their screens are cracking

At first I was going for the Samsung Flip 5 but once I found out the Ultra includes wireless charging and because I use T-Mobile well it's...
Shut up and take my money!

It's 2022 at 2023 pricing. If you are seriously a phone addict the you'll be waiting for Samsung to play its cards. Even more so as the price pushes the Moto into the premium flagship zone. If they'd pushed it into the range with Oppo Find N Flip it would have been an attractive option.... Sorry Moto, it's "Goodbye" not "Hello"....

Daemon Targaryen, 02 Jun 2023The cheaper Razr was the one I completely ignored like ever... moreThe regular Razr is looking to be the more important of the two devices simply because it offers the first semblence of "affordable" in the folding form factor.
The 800 EUR asking price significantly undercuts the samsung and oppo RRPs. Sure, they do trim down on features to get that asking price, but to a regular consumer who doesn't necessarily care too much about the specs it's now a much more compelling asking price for the novelty of haivng a phone that can fold in half.

AnonD-546724, 02 Jun 2023I don't know maybe that's because it fold in half... more"perfectly hold its own compared to similarly priced flip phones"
I am more than happy to tell you that even compared with similarly sized and priced clam-shell foldables, it is still a tiny sensor.
S5K2LD/IMX555 on board Z flip 4 is around 100% larger.
IMX600 on board Pocket S is also around 100% larger.
IMX866/890 on board X flip and Find N flip are around 167% larger.
(866 is a multi aspect sensor and the full size is 1/1.49@16:11, they cropped to use 1/1.56@4:3)
And speak of Moto themself, last year they used a 1/1.56 sensor, there's no excuses. So...

Looking at the current trend of having external screens as big as possible I'm wondering why the hell you should have a flip phone. I do get the added value to have a small external display for the most important things like calling and texting/messaging notifications but I don't get it when it is stretched to the max of the available space. No matter how "big" you make it, it is still cramped and as such more a gimmick than useful. Not only that but more screens mean more battery usage and potentially less space for a bigger battery. If you're that lazy that you don't want to open your phone to have a proper screen, then why buy a flip phone? Get a normal candy bar one of a full size fold phone.
Back in the days of the original Razr, you also had a small external display that only served to have a preview of incoming things, the date and time (and maybe weather info). For all the rest you had to open it. That is always the drawback of flip phones, size is the major advantage so usability takes a little bit of a hit. Live with it and don't try to apply solutions to that.

bormat, 01 Jun 20231200€ for last gen chipset and tiny main camera sensor.
... moreI don't know maybe that's because it fold in half Einstein ?
Can't be compared similarly priced slabs, but will perfectly hold its own compared to similarly priced flip phones.
Unbelievable that we still have to explain this stuff 4 years down the line.

Wish they would improve on the rear cameras to at least 32mp for the main. Batt would be nicer too if it was above 4000. Guess ill stick to oppo find n2 flip.
