Super disappointed in Samsung Flip. Screen broke at the fold junction, and needs repair.
Turns out an overwhelming number of users have the same issue. This is just a cool looking hardware with no durability

I’d prefer the Samsung. That’s just me. I like how it’s more discreet design.

FarFan, 13 Jun 2023Where are all those people screaming about 21:9 in Sony pho... moreExactly. This is why i take phone reviews with a grain of salt.
Same with all Xperias except the 10s you can use your main cameras for selfies.
That's why Xperias with dedicated camera button trumps all.
So versatile. You can take pictures being blindfolded and not even needing to look at the screen

I have comparable 'slab' hpone (Galaxy S20FE 5G) and here me out why I think some of the drawbacks mentioned here, these flip phones are actually not bad at all

        With S20FE
        * Main screen glass cracked and had to be exchanged 2x in 3 years despite having protecting glass over it at all time (and those cracks did not even happen during drops)
--> This type of damage is much more unlikely to occur on the inner screen with a FOLD, though I know there are quality control issues (but warranty will cover those, unlike cracks)

        * Despite 4500mAh battery, with my use case the phone does not last a full day either
--> so if I need to top up during the day anyway, what difference does the extra capacity really make?

*Every week I have multiple instances of ghost dials and other (sometimes quite serious/embarassing) uncommanded activity due to the phone not locking itself properly (for whatever reason) when it lands in my pocket --> This obviously won't happen with a closed flip phone

*Photo - 90% of the time, the two cameras that are present are the ones that are being used, and they are about as good as you'd get on the flagships (there is not a big difference). For me the telephoto hardly gets used, it's a shaky mess, dark and slow. However, to be able to make selfies / videos with the main cameras is an obvious and often-used advantage here

        * The capacitive fingerprint reader is so much better for a variety of reasons (higher success rate, no smudge on screen, knows gestures etc.) than than the in-screen ones (especially the optical ones) and you cannot get those anymore on candybar phones --> Flip phone wins

What do you expect? After all it's still a foldable-mechanical device with a small battery, so it's only natural that they limit their performance in large enough portions so that the phone doesn't heat up quickly and the battery doesn't run out quickly.

I love these long term reviews. Haters will hate but for me they are a great read over a coffee. Your content is the best in mobiles! ( And no I'm not related to any of them just so many moaners on here are depressing)

FarFan, 13 Jun 2023Where are all those people screaming about 21:9 in Sony pho... moreShhhh..... samsung/oppo have more 🐏 than sony.

Find N2 Flip's big screen also makes the phone ugly like there's a huge black patch covering something. So buy the Z Flip 4 if you don't want the black patch to be noticable.

Where are all those people screaming about 21:9 in Sony phones? why they are so quiet here about galaxy with 22:9? Such a comfortable one hand form factor while it's taller and winder than Xperia 1 V?

I've had a Flip 3 for more than a year, with zero issues compared to any other phone.

Ss, 13 Jun 2023One thing I know about samsung their tendency to force peop... moreThe green line problem seems to be the owners abusing their devices. Only ones I have seen are people dropping and cracking screens or sitting on them or bending them in their pockets etc.

Owned Samsung devices for years (S2 to the current S23), various A series and other brands along the way, and never had any screen issues. I look after my devices.

From experience, Samsung phones are more reliable than other brands in general and in the long run and seem to stand up to general abuse better.

One thing I know about samsung their tendency to force people to upgrade by screwing phone screen as with s20 green line issue and now recently s21 ultra pink line issue. Flipped or folded will definitely amplify this issue.

You embarrassed yourself by calling this a long-term review when it is clear from your text that you just played around with them both.

Your software test lacks the flip-specific features. Instead, you elaborate on launcher because you did not concentrate on the “flip”-side.

Calling a system laggy because after a restart it takes longer before all is sorted out once again shows you just played around and did not use the phone really.

You wrote: “We don't consider either of these mature enough for mainstream users”. Another proof of not having used the phone. We have one of them in our household, in daily use since last august. And guess what: as mature as any other device.

PS: long-term review does not mean having the phone in the drawer for a long-term period.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Vivo X Flip are better than both of these phones. The Razr 40 Ultra's battery life is a little bit of a letdown. But it's a little narrower than last year's and retains the rounded sides. I don't like the sharper sides of the Flip 4 and N2 Flip.

Samsung squandered their lead by refusing to change it much for each new year. Stuck with the deep creases, narrow Z Folds, and small cover displays on their Z Flips. Motorola got it right with Gen 1 that Samsung barely figured out by Gen 5.
