Most phones that are not IP rated are still water resistant. OnePlus was skipping IP certification for many years to keep prices down, even if the phones definitely wouldve gotten some IP rating had they paid for the certification

It is not just marketing and licence fees. It is about good engineering that is durable.

I am not sure about this statement
"We're absolutely happy that Xiaomi isn't making this one available globally"

Besides this phone and Honor Magic V2, which folded phone is good? Fold 5? I don't see any point in buying Fold 5 due to a lot of issues especially one hand usage of front screen, not any big upgrades from previous version.

If you are worried about IP68 rating, it is just certification, and costs manufacture extra money, and increase phone price itself.

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2023It's a China ONLY release plus MIUI is still garbage. ... moreIf you are talking old MIUI 11 being garbage, you are right. But MIUI 12 onwards they improved a lot especially in smoothness.

All you have written just confirms what I wrote: you don't need really a Fold most of the time. But hopefully you get happy with another Fold.

Imagine turning an almost objectively bad design into a positive. You need to do marketing!

                That battery life i like.

There are no incentives, exchanges, giveaways and bad deals to inflate numbers that I know of. I'm also not sure how a discount to the consumer is a bad deal, but if you like paying msrp, that's your choice.

They asked how many people are buying these foldables. I gave them the number. You made up something I never wrote and ran with it like a baton.

JLC, 26 Aug 2023To all making an argument for the thinnest foldable and a c... moreI agree. I've been using the Z Fold4 for a year now and I love the narrow cover screen. It's really pleasant to be able to use a device on the go one-handed. Can't do that with the large slab phones these days. But the bigger reason why I love the narrow cover screen is that it encourages me to use the main screen, which is the whole point of a foldable in my opinion. A larger cover screen on a foldable just means having two slap phones slapped on top of each other. An absolute gimmick.

JLC, 26 Aug 2023To all making an argument for the thinnest foldable and a c... moreSpeak for yourself. There's alot to like about proper slab phone experience too. There is a lot of times in my life when I dont need or want or cant use (only 1 hand available or smth) the tablet mode, but I still need to/want to use my phone. With Z Fold 5 this is torture, as it's heavy, thick and awfully narrow screen (although easy to grip cos its so narrow, but not easy to use).

Im using a Fold5 now and I dont like this. I pay 2k for a phone that is 1,5-in-1. I want a 2-in-1 cos even if I want (and "need" as its very useful when i work alot on phone) a foldable, a lot of the use is still with the phone folded close and often one handed. If I have 2 hands available I will usually open it, but doing literally anything with the Fold5 closed up is not fun and I find myself rather not using it at all over using the cover display.

Im fine with people preferring the Fold5 formfactor. Maybe its pocketable for you? It bulges a little too much for my taste cos its THICC. But I really do want a proper experience closed and opened and thats why Im switching my Fold5 to most likely Honor V2 when it comes available. Ill miss a few software things, but I think I'll get over it.

To all making an argument for the thinnest foldable and a cover screen with a size of a standard slab phone: it does not make any sense!
If you wanted such a device and wanted to use the cover screen most of a time , you most probably won't need a foldable. Just save the money and grab a standard flagship.

A cover screen as big as a slab phone contradicts the concept of a pocketable tablet. It is not a masterpiece to have the thinnest foldable when at the same time you get a much bigger surface. These devices have 3 dimensions. If you make it thinner, you'll have a much bigger footprint. That simple it is. Samsung wants to keep the smaller foot print which means more pocketable. Therefore, the Z Fold cannot get thinner, in particular if they want to offer a silo for the S Pen.

PepperPot, 26 Aug 2023It's not really that much of a mystery. 14 million in... moredon't count couple of million each year that were exchanged for the new one + couple hundreds $, talk about pure sales, not these terrible deals that only inflate the sales to make people like you believe that they're "the future".

GSMArena is an English language site, so there isn't likely going to be many Chinese people reading it, hence the cons of not having a warranty in the US and EU.

I imagine Chinese review sites would say the same thing for products lacking Chinese specific features or warranty.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2023I wonder how many people actually buy foldablesIt's not really that much of a mystery. 14 million in 2022. Sales have already been up by 50% of that through H1 of 2023. If that pace continues, we're looking at 20-30 million for 2023.

AnonD-546724, 26 Aug 2023As a con, you might want to add, alongside china exclusive ... moreWell china and india is a far bigger market, world doesnt revolve around USA and the terrible phone market it has and backing the fact america is purposely nerfing/bottlenecking the market isnt a positive lol.

Europes phone market is not doing well and are selling less phones so again comparing it to the 2 worst markets on this planet isnt a good thing to point out but maybe i just see things differently. Plenty of china exclusives that get 4g/5g fine, if you go through company to buy the device you have to have warrenty by law so I'd rsther try different, probably more enjoyable devices than going with the media pushed, mainstream devices that are overhyped and actually very average to use (everyone i know uses basically samsung and always a worse experience using their devices).
