It is very, very, very rarerly for a phone to hold that long. Even this one is guaranteed to last because they made it very different and repairable. Nothing lasts this long, not even apple. If you're calling "the phone turns on" but has a tone of issues after arround 4 years, to be something long lasting....well, the joke is on you.

Second if I pay this much money it should be on par or at max +10% more expensive than a brand name .
Why on earth would I pay so much , live with subpart camera , battery life , no wireless charging , no sim swap when I travel etc . And above all this pay more and thinking that I will use an outdated phone longer. Why ?
If it was top of the line maybe yes one may take his chances but as it is it looks like an overpriced phone with a " save the planet " logo.
I really like the idea but the phone must be Flagship not only in price . It must have features that people need like zoom camera and wireless charging and replaceable sim.
Too bad the phone is average.
Also I repaired myself several phones . No problem parts are available for any brand name phone

Imho, the manufacturing of ANY battery-powered device (ok, not including EVs) where the user cannot easily replace and recycle the battery/ies should be illegal.

davidtb, 20 Sep 2023Will this be as big as "Project ARA"? no it is some bit different ARA was all modular all could be changed to as you wish but Fairphone is partly modular mainly to repair it more easily and the target is sustainability and that is achieved with making it modular for several parts, so something is broken repair it simply by replacing the broken part instead of buy a complete other phone

The only way Fairphone 5 would be a good buy is if the chipset is replaceable because of its pricepoint. I love the friggin idea. This would be a new generation of customizeable phones. But the way capitalism works, this will be very hard to execute. As of now just buy a phone and replace it, is the best way to go. Unless you're an absolute klutz who drops your phone everyday. This will never be a good buy.

I would love to get one as my second phone but the price really stopped me. That's because I am comparing to my current second phone which is a HTC U11 that I bought in 2017. Has been 6 years and the phone still works great, I just had to replace the battery twice which cost me about USD15 which I replaced it myself. Also with many DIY Youtube videos, these days it has become very easy to repair your own phone. Spareparts for the phone is quite easily available and very affordable. Also I paid almost similar price for my HTC U11 but that was a flagship in 2017.
The only upside again is that Fairphone will provide updates for many years and updates for my HTC stopped the moment Google took over it(and then sold it). For now, I cant justify the price yet.

I am watching fairphone from the 2nd version. I was looking forward to buying one starting with 4, but then: 1. They removed the headphone jack (yes I use it). 2. They removed FM radio (yes I listen to radio, I don't use streaming services). 3. They introduced eSIM, which is useless in my country, and I need a dual-sim phone or at least hybrid. 4. I listen music on my phone, and quality of the playback is important to me, so I need very good sound quality. I even wrote to them, that I really appreciate what they do and mentioned all that could make this phone a success. They didn't care. The reply was that they removed the jack because of ingress issues (but how other ip 68 phones like sony with 3.5mm open jack manage to be ip68?), they put eSim because it is the next big thing (even though they sell in Europe and not USA where eSIM is more popular) and they didn't reply anything about FM radio, with additional bot-generic phrases. So I concluded that they actually don't care about the people they build phones for, they do whatever they want to do. That is why IMO they won't gather more sales in the future. In such a marked where lots of phone manufacturers copy the worst possible practices from Apple, they could have been the breath of fresh air, because we have no options. They don't want that. So, for now, I will stick to the compromise Sony Xperia phones as I did until now, because I basically have no choice. I might switch to mid tier/high end Samsung phones if they bring back what I need, but that is a very slim chance they will do a comeback.

This is the phone I most wish I could justify getting. The ethos of it is fantastic and necessary.
However, I really don't know if these internals will handle Android for long enough to justify the price on ownership length. A refurbished flagship - emphasis refurbished because, again, the environmental aspect is important to me - will offer far more futureproof performance. (Although the 8GB RAM matches the non-Ultra S23 phones and indeed the base Ultra, so if that's a limiting factor in 2027 it will be for an otherwise drastically faster S23 too...)

Pedro, 20 Sep 2023This device has a lot of compromises for me to ignore the l... moreEspecially in an "enthusiast-oriented" phone it just can't be ignored. Anyone buying this POS is not a true enthusiast.
I would only ignore the lack of 3.5mm jack if there's nothing else left to buy. Just like I did with non-removable batteries, but mindless consumers are always the majority, so they always win.
