HTC Touch Diamond review: Geek's best friend

15 July 2008
We called it a game for the Diamond and Omnia but the crowd is still on their feet, so there we go with the HTC Diamond's lap of honor. The latest HTC squad member, HTC Touch Diamond, might as well be starting a new era for Microsoft OS-powered mobiles....

I need to use a Bluetooth Headset for work for roughly 10 hours a day; just after I finish work the battery goes dead. What if I work late or meet up with a friend? No Phone! I always used to swear by HTC, but less than a full days use from a phone with minimal text and calls is a joke. I've tried tweaking a few things but nto muvh better, you shouldn't have to do that with a new phone. Selling it on eBay now and hoping I get a decent amount so I can get a a phone with adequate battery life.
If it wasn't for the battery I would still be using this now, hope HTC read these comments and take note!

I was pretty lucky! I had this phone 2 days..looks stunning, but thats NOT the point. I travel on the London Underground from Hampstead to Waterloo which takes roughly 40 mins, so I thought I'd use the Diamond as my iPod. Well, those 40 minutes, 3x10 min. convo's at work and another 40 mins back - BATTERY FLAT,FINISHED,GONE!!pretty horrible.

NEXT THING, the headphone cable has a mini-usb jack which I was worried about breaking as I brisk walked in and out of trains and through steps at the stations.THAT IS PRETTY SENSITIVE!

FINALLY, thumb and finger prints make it horrible to live with. Looks a mess if you dont polish it as soon as you're done using it.

So, if you drive a BMW 7 Series or a Mercedes SLK class..this mobile is well suited to you but for the typical commuting Londoner - i would not even think about having it.

I SOLD IT FOR £ 300 on Day 3. As I said, LUCKY ME!!im sure its going to be hard to sell for even £ 250 in a months' time specially after Orange have put those offers on it.

If you find this review helpful, I'm happy!

Chris - Oxford, 21 Jul 2008I moved to Blackberry a few years ago and have been toying ... moreI felt the same way as you did, but after a while, after getting to know the phone better and how it behaves, it's really a cool phone. I don't like fingerprint smudges on its beautiful screen, so I use the stylus 95% of the time, and it works just fine. The reason why I held on to this phone, and I'm glad I did, is its web browsing capabilities. It's the best I've ever had (my last phone was the N95 8gb). Also, it's VGA screen display quality is the best barnone, although Nokia is still unbeatable under direct sunlight. Viewing and zooming pics is really a pleasure with this phone. So it does have fine qualities that surpasses its poor ones. As for its battery life. It's really not that bad. Users tend to play around with this phone a lot and that is the reason why it drains fast, but if you use it only when you need to, it can last you for 2 days w/out charging. I'm glad I gave this phone a second chance.

I moved to Blackberry a few years ago and have been toying with this phone, the new BB Bold and the Nokia N96. The wait for the Nokia is too long as my current BB 8000 has seen better days.
I have tried the Touch Diamond for 3 days and have booked its return already: put simply, I am hating the touchscreen system of this phone.
Moving between applications via the "slider method" is not guaranteed and I too have found the battery life to be poor.
The only feature of this phone I like is the "Teeter" game which I shall miss.
I understand that Vodafone are getting the BB Bold in on 1 August: I shall be on the phone to them as early as possible on that day booking my exchange.

I really wanted to like this handset but it just wasn't to be: Blackberries may not be the prettiest handsets on the market but for emailing etc nothing beats a proper QWERTY keyboard.

            Sorry, HTC.

Anonymous, 18 Jul 2008this phone awesome !! sluggish and laggy UI has been DEM... moreUmmm, with all due respect sir. I am in the healthcare profession. I am busy everyday taking care of sick patients, so pardon me for my stupidity if I am not as savvy as you are. For this phone's price ($785), I shouldn't be dealing with performance issues that would be ok and pardonable for phones under $200. I am a busy professional who does not have time figuring out how to tweak my phone to fix its bugs. I didn't buy this phone either so I can in time unlock its mysteries so it can perform to its full potential. I bought this phone expecting it to work.

The speaker phone review is flawed due to the location of the actual speakers on each phone. The HTC tilt was rated as having the loudest speaker phone, yet it is the least functioning out of all. Web browsing and TV capabilities should be the main focus. Having to pay to put your own ringtones on your iPhone should be noted.

I have tested this phone and was NOT impressed at all! Maybe a personal thing, but this is how I feel about this phone. I don't like it!

I will wait for the Samsung i900 Omnia. I expect this phone will be much better.

This phone has unforgivable issues. First of all, its sluggish touch UI. For its price, you would expect a better performing phone. Another is its erratic behavior. Waking it up from its sleep mode is fine, but then as soon as you tap on "contacts", the screen blanks out and it re-launches touchflo, and then sends you back to the home screen, and after that, its fine again. Last night for the first time, the screen just went all white and froze, and I had to press the reset button. First reset was unsuccessful. The phone turned on but was not responding to anything, so I had to do another reset, and it was fine. It's a cool looking phone with wonderful features, and a beautiful display, but I don't know how long I can deal with its erratic performance. And oh btw, that glass display that's supposed to be tempered glass and scratch-resistant, it gets scratches EASILY. I can't wait for Meizu Minione to come out so I could replace this phone.

As I've made similar comments. This phone is for the ladies, just like th iPhone. They don't care what it has, just that it looks sexy.

This device has a slow and laggy interface (poor shame considering how good that interface is), underpowered by the battery, too light and plasticky, and most of all too small a screen to enjoy the experience with.

This device is for the geeks?.... Wimps you mean, reviewers. You guys or gals need to get a hold of some perspectives. You need to be a lot more objective.

                            this device is seriously underwhelming.

The diamond is like a wolf in sheep's clothing. To the common user, it's a sluggish overpriced phone. To people like me who really see the Diamond for what it really is, a compact PPC with great capability that overshadow that of the iPhone. You can tailor this phone to however you see fits with a cooked ROM and there are plenty of upgradability that comes with it. I love this phone.

Been using one of these for 2 weeks now, it's the first touchscreen phone I have ever had - and the only non-Nokia for 8 years! It does take some time to get used to, plus with the Windows OS there is a LOT on there - lots of features most users wouldn't use. Battery life greatly improved after a few charges, I now get at least 2 days of average use now. It's not without it's faults, but what phone is these days?

Speechless , i am, one of the most undercooked devices launched in several years, and the reviewers are falling over themselves to offer it a flattering review !!

Obviously, battery life, slow, abysmal OS , cheap product quality are , especially at the premium prices, are follies that are easily overlooked, agaianst a consideration of what this phone, COULD do in 2 years time,?

where is the objectivity, that is usually associated with GSM Arena?

Review is too forgiving !! This is a flawed product, and should be withdrawn till as such time as free ROM upgrades and requisite tweaks are carried out , for users who bought the device.
