I recently got the 8 on sale, and it's easily the best phone I've owned. It's definitely worth the upgrade from the 6a.

Tensor G3 is one of those chips where the performance is so bad it impacts day to day use.

Any iPhone before 6s is just old.
iPhone 7/8 have massive bezels; A10 and A11 chips are aging.
iPhone XR has a decent A12, only a single camera and abysmal 820p LCD.
X, XS and XS Max have OLED panels but is aging rapidly. iPhone XS is turning 6 this year.

iPhone 11 does have that terrible display but does have A13 and dual cameras.

Gsmarena, it would have been interesting to see whether the algorithms for the image quality at 2x zoom have been improved in comparison with the 7a.

Once one uses a pixel camera, there is no going back. As unfortunate as it is, it's the truth. Otherwise, in every other aspect, the phone is pure and utter garbage. This particular device is ridiculously priced.

I am also an owner of Pixel 6a, and although it does get warm sometimes and sometimes I do wish for slightly faster charging, these are small prices to pay for the fantastic cameras and great software experience.

On the topic of 8a. I do agree that it is in no man's land at present. It doesnt offer much of an upgrade as compared to 7a, and there are a lot of compromises as compared to Pixel 8. Pixel 7a and 8 (with discounts) offer better value than 8a.

Personally, I am going to get the Pixel 8 this fall (once it gets even cheaper thanks to festive discounts and also due to commencement of local manufacturing). Pixel 6a will be handed over to my better half (whose pixel 4a is reaching its end of life).

"most logical sense is that this is a deliberate design decision to make the A-series model look visually cheaper to differentiate it from the more expensive Pixel 8"

                        100% this ☝️

I am currently using Pixel 6a.
When I was researching about 6a at the time of launch, there were many negative reviews, like - Fingerprint issues, Tensor heat issues, refresh rate things and all.
However, no where I found any negative thing about its Software. So I decided to buy one 2 month's from the launch.

And it's nearly 2 years now. I never had any issues with the finger print thing, No Tensor chip heating ( I am from India) or any problem with the refresh rate or anything else.
I prefer clean software and Pixel makes me happy.

But I cannot say same things about 8a. Maybe, one can wait for sometime and see if Google irons out the issues ( which it usually does, if not always).
But I am waiting for Pixel 9 or 10 , whenever TSMC fab chip will be used.
Till then Pixel 6a is absolutely working fine for me.

With largely the same camera performance, potentially a worse bezel design and slightly (?) better battery life with a slightly faster chipset that might not be all that noticeable anyway in daily use it's pretty clear to me that the 7a at a far cheaper price (and the 7 and potentially an 8 on sale) is a far better prospect even before this eventually goes on sale.

I have never seen bezels this big on a modern smartphone in years. Looks ridiculous. This forces you to get the regular Pixel 8. This is their plan.... Elephant footprints are smaller then these bezels.

Could have put an actual bezel that fit the front camera in it like the pixel 4 and kept the sides and bottom small this looks horrible
