The next owner or the next one after that, will still like to use it for as long as the device is functional. It isn't e-waste as far as HW goes. So therefore it is sad when Moto drops support as early as they tend to do.

Motorola currently has the 3 OS + 4 Year security updates that was common a few years ago. And not for their more budget oriented devices. They're still stuck at 1 OS update.

I'm curios what most normal users would prefer, I think many would gladly take one less OS update for three additional years of security updates. So 2 OS and 7 years security updates as far as Moto flagships goes. It is very rare that any apps require an android version more recent than 5 years, so that should match up quite alright.

Unsinkable 2, 28 Jun 2024I don't understand the software support race. Does any... moreWhy would anyone be against updates equal to competitors? 🤨
Seems like you all are making excuses for terrible Motorola software support when they can't even support a phone properly within a year of it's launch (Razr 40U is STILL on Android 13) why would you think 50U is different. 3 promised OS updates, they can't even deliver 1 properly! Warranty support is equally bad.

Crappy software killed LG despite nice phones, it'll do the same to Motorola.

Continuing to use a cell for internet/phone tasks after security updates end is just stupid, especially if you consciously choose a phone with terrible support (their security also lags the others [not monthly but bi-monthly, and not as long]). 🙄

Even if yes, it would work perfectly without os update (which, to be honest aren't monumental steps ahead lately), the security updates are the important ones.

Can you use the external display as preview having the phone open whilst shooting 4k 60fps on the 50 Ultra? On my 40 Ultra it reverts back to 30fps without any warning as soon as I enable the external preview. Very annoying. I can however start the camera whilst folded and shoot 4k 60fps using the external display that way...

From long term use of my 40 Ultra I can tell charging speed is certainly thermal constrained. Fastest charging (which is actually not bad) is achieved with the phone open and on a surface that takes the heat away. Plug it in folded up and/or on something that doesn't transfer the heat away and it slows down significantly. Is this still the case on the new one?

Anonymous, 27 Jun 2024That issue is also with the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5. Not jus... moreWhile the issue is a Google problem, there is a Samsung fix in some regions, however Motorola users can probably use the fix of the other regions of rolling back the Google Assistant version.

I will say that Motorola software support is truly terrible. I had the 5G version of the revamped RAZR as I had a coupla older Razrs so I was coming " back into the FOLD " 😉 , however the horrible software support including industry-lagging updates made me switch to the Flip.

I wanted to stay with the Razr, as my first corporate cellphone was the Startac (with 1MB calendar clip-on) I got on my first day working for Motorola, which made me a flip fan for life (including Kyocera 7135 and Blackberry Oxford later called style (which I got 3 months prior to launch) and my last flip and last motorola phone before the Razr 5G was the Pininfarina i833.

I'd come back to Motorola Razr, but the software support would need to improve IMMENSELY, because right now IT SUX! They'd also have to at least have USB 3.0+, 2.0 is ridiculous nowadays regardless of charging speed.

BatSoup, 26 Jun 2024Overall seems like a pretty decent phone, just seems really... moreI've been in Mobility for 3 decades and work with sales teams from consumer to enterprise, them removing crappy chargers is the best thing that ever happened.
Sure it's nice when companies add chargers that are better than required, as is the case here (or Oppo etc), but that is the exception, and wasn't the norm.
Instead even companies like Apple were shipping crappy (not our fastest speed / or best) chargers 5V/2A for Apple 18W for Samsung up until they dropped them.

But there is NO FREE LUNCH (or charger), part of the price increase of the Razrr 50U is that included charger. If you already have a good PD charger ( I have a dozen ) why would you want another one, instead of $50-100 off the price of the phone?

They aren't proprietary anymore, so why does anyone need an overpriced branded charger? If you still want one you can still get them at Best Buy when they go on sale every 3 months. Or Amazon... you think that same 68W charger that sells for $60 US, isn't just added to the MSRP?

Europe, 27 Jun 2024Too bad it's too wide, 74 mm is too much for this form... moreMotorola used to have much smaller Razr phones. The Razr 5G was 6.2" and was 72mm wide. If a modern Razr was to use a smaller screen, it would've been closer to 71mm in width.

Samsung flip 5 hinge survived 225k folds where motorola razr40 ultra hinge survived only 45k folds in real life tests. Hinge is the most important part of a foldable. Did Motorola upgrade hinge durability in any sorts?

Does it support car key? It's not even mentioned at all, car key is a future tech that needed on all new high end new phones

Anonymous, 26 Jun 2024Poco F1 user here, please tell me how my phone is? True it... moreGlad to hear you are happy with your phone and it has lasted a long time. Now compare the specs with phones today:

                    https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_pocophone_f1-9293.php

Not quite up to running with the big dogs of today which most people want in a phone. Great phone when it came out and, as you point out, still a good phone today. But most people are looking for better security features in their OS than Android 10 can deliver, better cameras, an OLED instead of an LCD, and better performance than a 10mm Snapdragon 845.

Time has produced much better phones in many areas over the Poco F1. However, if you are happy with it, more power to you.

Too bad it's too wide, 74 mm is too much for this form of phones. Below 70 mm will be much better (I tried them).

Guys, What happened to the "Photo & Video compare tool"? Recently released phones are not listed there. Any idea? 🙁

That RAZR is truly disappointing - Since January users have to open the phone to use Google Assistant, and Moto is not even committing to fix this critical user-function, despite still advertising that Assistant can be used with the phone closed. It is a serious defect for a phone that promotes usability when closed. The Lenovo/Moto/RAZR support/discussion board shows how little Moto is taking any responsibility of a broken feature Moto specifically promotes. Moto RAZR... outrageous you have to open the phone to use Google Assistant, awkward, not as advertised, more wear on the hinge and screen fold... since Jan '24 - still that way in June. Great idea, but someone dropped the ball on this critical function.

Tazman, 26 Jun 2024The 8S gen 3 isn't just 5% weaker than the 8 gen 2 , e... moreNot all phone manufactures want to milk out power from the SoC. For example OnePlus 12 multi core score was around 5100 while performance mode was on with 8 gen 3(!) while moto 50 ultra scored around 5000 normally.
What I meant was the median of 8 gen 2 and 8s gen 3 difference (according to a website named nano reviews)/

Overall seems like a pretty decent phone, just seems really bizarre that you have to actually stick your case on for it to work properly, which I feel is probably the first time that's been a thing. Despite that, it is nice to see that it includes a full charger rather than just a cable, which being in sales with phones I see as a massive issue that they just don't include a plug anymore.

Oh my god those throttling on all those new Snapdragons are hilarious You literally getting Snapdragon 7xx series after few minutes...
And sorry but its not due to phone being foldable, Its just crappy chip and total lack of proper thermal conduction.
I recently had to replace back on Pixel 7 phone that is know for running extremely hot and after adding few thermal pads under and over board phone it stopped throttling that much, not just tinny blob of cheapest paste where chip is, but thermal pad over metal cover to despite heat over wide area. Now imagine if they just do that as standard... its literally thermal pad that costed me maybe 2$...
