Motorola Edge 50 and Edge 50 Neo hands-on review

You guys are frontin'. Your on a tech website everyday reading about new phones, but your still using phones from 7 years ago. I simply don't believe it. It's okay to admit you pollute the environment just like the rest of us. It doesn't matter at this point anyways. I buy a new phone every year. I liked it better when the phone companies made packaging out of plastic also. Refuse to recycle, everything in the trash. I'm just like you, only difference is I don't lie about it

Anonymous, 07 Sep 2024i mean yeah my s9+ is now currently lying around the house ... more$1500? Is that how much the Motorola Edge 50 Neo costs? Cuz this thread is on that phone right? It's a $400 phone homie so stop. News flash, the environment is irrecoverably damaged, so your miniscule efforts to help out don't matter. If it's a financial reason to keep a phone for 10 years then get your paper up homie.

as a side note, i very much enjoy not upgrading, because new hardware (and especially new software) always has new, horrible to get used to hardware "quirks" (or just outright feature removal). having reliable hardware is unbeatable over rushing to buy a brand new 2000usd gpu that crashes on the thing you actually play for 3 months straight because "sorry the product is still too fresh :)"

BillyOcean, 07 Sep 2024Anybody that thinks we can save the planet by using our pho... morei mean yeah my s9+ is now currently lying around the house as i have upgraded due to a deceased battery. i fail to see how "getting your moneys worth out of a product" is "just as harmful as buying a new phone every year because i use it as a status symbol and if people dont give me looks for spending at least 1500usd on phones every 12 months i dont feel accepted"
some of the people who are very much interested in reading reviews and buying the best their money can afford are in fact not the same as you! its wild how that works. please tell me, in a single sentence, what is actually wrong with people avoiding rampant consumerism, yet reading reviews and product comparisons to not buy garbage.

BillyOcean, 07 Sep 2024Anybody that thinks we can save the planet by using our pho... moreYou're making assumptions and generalizing. I never use plastic water bottles, haven't for a long time. I also work from home so my impact from driving is much smaller compared to all the daily commuters stuck in traffic, but even if I didn't work from home, taking public transit is an option.

You seem to have a defeatist attitude. People like you are just part of the problem and make no effort to become part of the solution.

BillyOcean, 07 Sep 2024Anybody that thinks we can save the planet by using our pho... moreIt's still a step forward... Besides, the vast majority of people are poor: sure, I'd love to use glass bottles, but there's a significant price difference. Instead, I'm drinking tap water that comes out of the public water system, from my glass cup. It's pretty good! Also, I walk a lot, because gas prices are through the roof! Sure, I'd love to change my Pixel 6a, because the battery is dying out, but I'm going to hold onto it for a little bit more. So, you see, it's not the vast majority of people who don't do something for the environment, it's actually the rich: Elon Musk's airplane rides, Romanian president using personal airplane to travel to King Charles' coronation, when ALL other presidents used commercial airlines, some rich twat cursing with their yacht in the Mediterranean etc.. Suffice it to say, 1 rich dude is polluting equivalent to 100 poor dudes (maybe more!).

Your rocking an old Sony phone while driving around in a car polluting the air, while drinking from a plastic water bottle. You can miss me with that thought process. I'm sure all you guys have old phones laying around the house, but you ain't using them daily. Stop frontin'

BillyOcean, 06 Sep 2024Stop with the e-waste argument homie. You using still using... moreDude. Don't knock on people who try to be more conscious of their buying habits. My phone is also from 2017 (sony xperia xz premium) but going strong. I haven't felt a need to upgrade at all. The side effect of this is I save money which is great, and I'm also reducing my impact on the environment.

You are only partially correct when you say "You still using a phone from 2017 isn't saving the planet". It is true that if only one or a few people do this, then the impact is negligible because there are billions of people on earth. However if everyone takes part in this behaviour then the impact would be huge.

BillyOcean, 06 Sep 2024Stop with the e-waste argument homie. You using still using... moreIt's simply pointless to get a new phone, both budget-wise and environment-wise.
Also, why should I buy a new phone? My phone simply has everything I need, and nothing I don't need. Why should I pay more for a weaker phone with a taller body in the first place?

Also it's my choice to use an older phone. I don't support consistent disposing of mobile phones, and I have no reason to judge others' opinions.

Have all the apps given up on supporting my phone? Not.
Is my phone obsolete? Definitely not.
I have already "stepped into the 2020s" with my phone, considering that it is still Google Play Protect supported. Same with the security updates, even under an older Android version. Bank apps work too, with no known vulnerabilities till date. Same with the 1440p display you can never find on an affordable "modern" smartphone today. How "cool" is that?

Minu, 06 Sep 2024Nah, I have no intention of calling myself "retro"... moreStop with the e-waste argument homie. You using still using a phone from 2017 isn't saving the planet. News Flash, the damage is already done, the planet is cooked. So you can retire your dinosaur and open your dusty wallet and step into the 2020's.

The point here is that, middle-of-the-road phones aren't "faster" or "better" than dated flagships overall. This is essentially the same reason why I prefer to contribute less to e-waste and more towards my priorities in life.

There are phone collectors in existence with vintage phones in immaculate conditions, so what argument do you hold against them?

And for the whole story, please refer to my lengthy comment on the Nokia 8 comment section. I have no reason to copy and paste the same comment whenever, wherever.

Motorola is quite consistent with their weak processor game. Just checked out a video on the edge 50 neo and this also has glitches and laggy camera due to the weak processor. Good game Motorola.

Having on an old phone laying around the house is different than using it for your daily driver. It's like you get a kick out of telling people, "look how retro I am!". Also yeah, ofc people want flat screens for repairability, but most average folk still love the look of curved screens. Besides, curved screen protectors aren't too expensive and still super easy to find. Idk what your point is.

I personally don't mind having either flat or curved screen, I just want curved back and matte sides. I'm not projecting my views I'm just trying to rationalize stuff, quit being so offended and look at things logically, jeez you acting like i said something about your wife or something.

Just for your information, I've talked to PLENTY of average users and customers. I do work in the IT field and am constantly in the face of the average users. It seems the average users now want flat screens because of repairability.
But go ahead and project your views on everyone else here for some reason?

I am not a big Motorola fan, but the Edge Neo might be one of the best lower mid range offers, when the price drops in 1-2 months..
3x optical zoom, good IP rating, good display and relative low weight..
                                        And 4k front video..
