I believe there are engineers at Apple who measured how long a battery lasts for all different charging speeds, at all sorts of discharge/charge patterns, after being dropped, heated, frozen, dropped again, etc. They also probably look at every generation of phone they've made and summarize decades of user complaints. Why wouldn't they examine the data?

They then probably chose the speed that gets a high percentage of users to either the end of the two-year warranty mandated by the EU or to some arbitrary length that they decide their phones should last. They would of course have a decade of data on how much is spent on warranty replacements, handling customer support, supply chain costs of needing extra batteries in five or seven years, and even the potential of a class action if they pick the wrong percentage. (Just look at how much the butterfly keyboard cost them.)

You can also understand that Apple isn't going to announce/publish their findings. Why attract criticism from every armchair engineer plus give other phone makers a business advantage? They gathered their own data and made a decision. Other brands pick a faster charge rate, and those are often brands who haven't shown any evidence of long-term reliability.

(According to Galaxus, Apple as a brand has a 2.4% return rate. Sony, ZTE, and realme have double that number. OnePlus and Asus are yet worse. Honor has triple the return rate. Huawei is off the charts at nearly 15%. Defect within 24 months? Apple leads with less than 1%. Only Samsung gets close. All other brands have at least double Apple's percentage.)

Charge while you're asleep and then charging speed should never matter.

Of course, people will invent scenarios where their personal lack of discipline or planning or just plain bad luck require a faster charging battery rather than more capacity or slower battery drain. 🤦

Should we also switch our cars to use NASCAR fuel dump cans?

Been using my iPhone 16 Pro Max for almost a week (switched from Sony 1 II).

        - Finally iOS feels like Android and in a good way.
        - Camera quality is comparable to Samsung/Pixel and picture colours are better than both (reminds me of Sony)
        - Capture button (My last Sony already had this) with Apple's innovative capacitive touch is good addition and been using it more often (didn't understand people complaining)
        - Battery life sofar is good, definetely way better than my old phones. In my day to day, I can see that I get around at least 8 hours SOT but not like reviewers mentioning 11-13 hours. Good to see Sony 1 VI still held the top position (Sony does indeed have low ppi but it is indeed 1 year old now).
        - Very surprised the size of phone is actually not that big but definitely feels wide compared to my old Sony 1 II
        - I really wish Apple brings the AI to Europe, otherwise this is one expensive gadget and rip off (1TB costed me around 1950€)
        - I can see myself using it for next 4-5 years. (I have used Sony 1 II for over 4 years)

It’s impressive that Apple now has two new SoC for iphones
            A18 its not a cut down A 18 pro

DaFink, 02 Oct 2024I have, consensus is that battery life on the 1 VI is very ... moreCan you send a link to that consensus? Because what I said was true. However, I don't believe it can last for two days, as some Sony branches claim. But it can easily outlive the other flagships out there.

I don't believe that the phone is without fault (slow charging vs. Chinese flagships; not sure how it would deal with hours of intense gaming (not a gamer myself)), but I am sure about the numbers I shared. Oh, and you should see the screen.

Check the Xperia 1 VI comments section, I have written there extensively my oppinion on the phone.

Goodthings, 02 Oct 2024Well, it is in my pocket. You don't have to believe me... moreI have, consensus is that battery life on the 1 VI is very good indeed, though not up there with your outlandish claims. Maybe tone it down a bit next time, you can make a point without going so obviously over the top……..

I remember being so excited with 11 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, and 14 Pro Max... but now... I don't know.. That's why I decided to switch to android now...

Surch a large phone, and Apple can not even cram a 5000mAh battery in that thing.
Others would be able to stuff in a 6000mAh into it im sure.

2 hours charging is not a con? well, at least it wasn't a pro either.

That, plus small incremental upgrades, high price, and the 20 year old marketing strategy of announcing already existing technology as innovation is what makes this environment a luxury prison.

My comment does not refute your point: it deconstructs it by exemplifying its lack of solid ground.

yeah I'm never trusting this site for calling this design beautiful when it's over 5 years old. Not to mention gushing over the camera when the indoor portrait shots are so awful especially of moving subjects.

                                    Yeah... no.
2 hours to charge is crazy.

It's funny how the more expensive iPhones are the most value for money. It's typical Apple MO draining the pockets of their flock as much as possible.
