Sony Xperia 1 VII review

I didn't expect such nonsense from GSMArena, but ok...
I mean this: "Still, if you want to unlock the phone while it's lying on a table, using the fingerprint reader won't be looking too elegant. Maybe one of these days Sony will eventually cave in and fit an underdisplay sensor? Or maybe not."
Does the reviewer know you can register multiple fingers? In which parallel fairy tale universe is an underdisplay sensor more "elegant" in that situation? I have to do acrobatics every time with my garbage S23 with its underdisplay sensor and it more often than not just doesn't want to unlock. With Xperia 1 III I can use my left hand's thumb, right hand pointing finger almost naturally and it unlocks in a tenth of a second in 100 % of cases.
As for the rest... Sadly, 1080p again, no nice narrow design of I-V, no notification LED so... Not a phone to buy on the market, astonishing. Guess my 1 III will keep its duties for at least one more year. Maybe I just switch to dumbphones then, wasting money on these "smart" ones seems dumber every year.

It would be great if price correctly.

Unsurprisingly, the phone turned out to be average at best with the rest of the flagship lineups. However, what they offer (like the 3.5mm jack, sd card, and the shutter button) are more practical offerings than most AI shenanigans of the current gens.
The color tuning is still amazing and the overall design is still solid. However, the bad thing abt Sony is they refuse to give major updates in most of its specsheet (I really hoped for a Si/C battery instead, and even got a worse battery life than the 1 VI), a better screen (not even 12bit color), and worse, availability is limited in most markets. I can't even try the newly released ones in stores except from borrowing from a colleague.
I just wish they aren't too afraid in taking a step forward in upgrading specs from last years' offerings.

Everyone was saying that the main weakness was tele sensor and yet they changed uw and left tele the same :/

Is this real? the battery performance is WORSE than last year's phone? Surely this can't be right...

I've always been impressed with Sony's true-to-life photo processing algorithm for the camera, and this new phone doesn't disappoint as well. But seeing that the major difference comes from the ultrawide camera, I may as well stick with last year's 1 VI. I'll wait until Sony puts a larger telephoto camera sensor on future Xperia 1 models. That's the one key area Sony could leap way ahead of the competition since nobody else is doing the same in the first place.

I'm quite happy with the results. My 1 V has met an untimely early demise thanks to an unlucky drop followed by a bad screen repair leading to dusty cameras followed by another drop. Things seem like both a solid continuation and a nice upgrade. That improved wide camera is going to be great for front row concert photos!

How hard is it to improve battery life and have 45W or 65W charging.

I want to love Sony; I really do. They are the only modern big Android manufacturer who still includes the headphone jack, microSD card slot, notchless display, front-facing speakers, a dedicated shutter button, toolless removal, textured back etc.
But they refuse to increase their charging speed or battery capacity, and the worst offender is their horrible sustained performance(which is the most important part of any phone). Thankfully their software support has improved significantly and the purple looks gorgeous, but it's not enough to make up for their shortcomings.

Could have been perfect if it retained or improved the previous version's battery life.

The purple colour looks gorgeous!
The new Xperia 1 VII isn't as much of an upgrade as I hoped, but it is still an upgrade (mostly the Ultrawide, Snapdragon 8 Elite, 6 years of security updates and possibly the headphone jack). The decreased battery life is a little... concerning. I'm hoping that will be fixed through software updates.

It feels like a wasted opportunity with the whole "Walkman" thing. I wish it had a higher-end DAC along with the gold.

The rumor was nonsense as is often the case. Available in Europe, including Germany and France, on June 12! I would take it in purple (not announced in Switzerland, but either it will come or the store will come without any problems). So delighted in purple. I still have this dilemma between the Technics (EAH-AZ100) and Sony (WF-1000XM5 and future XM6 this summer) headphones.
Great Review GSM Arena . Thanks ! (which at least spreads fewer false rumors
