Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review: Young as you feel

14 January 2009
It's touchscreen o'clock for Nokia and the stage is set for the 5800 XpressMusic. Go ahead and touch it. We did and we've got a story to tell. Now, it's technically not the first time Nokia get their hands dirty with touch screens, but it sure feels they really mean business this time. For Nokia 5800 is not the only story here...

I Am Going To Get This Phone When My Contract Is Available For Update.

I Was Told In A Nokia Store That They Would Pay For The Remaining Months Of My Contract For Me To Switch From T-Mobile To Vodafone. I May Do This But Im Not Totally Sure On How To Approach It.

Should I Ring T-Mobile Up And Tell Them That I Am Thinking Of Terminating My Contract With Them Because Nokia Have Offered Me A Buy Out, To Move To Vodafone With One Of Their Nokia Mobiles. Or Tell Them What Nokia Have Offered Me And See If They Can Better That.

Can Somebody Help Me :)

Thank You very Much (Y)

tina, 08 Feb 2009Is 5800 the worst phone Nokia ever produced? After six Noki... moreYou are the first person to truely talk sense and I thank you. I used this phone for the first time today and the reviews are correct, it is a laggy, uncohesive terrible interface that just doesn't work it really doesn't. The phone really has nothing to offer like every other Nokia. It is time people started to wake up and realise Nokia really are nothing anymore and when sales drop, Nokia may respond by making a decent phone... As for everyone else, the iPhone stands alone simply because it's interface is second to none. If hardware was updated then no one would have an issue with it. but until you own an iphone and use any other device to compare, you will never understand quite why it is the best phone and most revolutionary... Wait for the next iPhone, it's not always about megapixels and HD video... that's not revolutionary that's just putting better technology in that's already available...

Is Nokia Maps completely free and can it be used without an internet connection? Can I download maps of other countries for free? Also, does this software provide step by step directions? Thanks.

I can't believe that they didn't mention the speakers! They are the best on the market, they talk only about the sound quality from headphones, the speakers are where the magic is! They blew me away 1st time I heard them, and they still do.

                    HAHAHAHA!!!

A friend of mine bought this “phone” couple of days ago. Today he is here at my place so that I can take a look at his phone because it is very slow and restart every time you do something which is a little bit demanding. I sad to im that there is nothing I can do this phone is just rubbish.
I have always known from other peoples that this is the worst phone ever from Nokia, but even I am surprised how crap it is! Comparing it to the iPhone is like comparing a turtle to a F15 fighter!! Rubbish! LOL

tina, 08 Feb 2009Is 5800 the worst phone Nokia ever produced? After six Noki... moreDear you probably got a faulty nokia 5800. Even i got the same but, the issue was recognised by nokia dealer and he replaced me with the new nokia 5800 stock. I have tried this phone in number of ways and its very good and worth the money. please dont use this type of harsh language, be pratical, and for Rs 8000 you wont even get an ancient N73. Howver i am sure that you dont know what symbian is and feature wise iphone 2g is quite a joke compared to 5800.
Well only downside is camera quality (still far better than iphone 2g and video recording is awesome)which is expected to be improved in further upgrades.
So dont just generalize your personal misinformed experiences to everyone out here. Well i am sure you are unaware of the fact that when iphone 2g was launched it had so many bugs, so this is normal for newly launched phone.
Obviously iphone has much better looks and i am not against it, but acc to me its a novelty with much less features.
But goods for people like you who can go leaving some of the latest features.

Is 5800 the worst phone Nokia ever produced? After six Nokia handsets and a few others from other manufactures I certainly can say that it is the worst I've ever used. From the company's 1100 to E61i, I was a great fan of Nokia a most satisfied customer.

And that is why I ignored the warnings of some of my friends and those on the Internet to buy one for a sum of over Rs 19000.

From the very first call with it, it was clear that there were calling issues. Never has any of my Nokias sounded so bad. When, after five days and nearly 90 minutes of use, I decided to say enough is enough with it when I heard a fried yelling 'hello' the umpteenth time in that call lasting for some five minutes, I may have ended my association with Nokia. And as I lost a lot of money I think I have the right to say these things just to vent my anger.

Some people have called it the iPhone killer. I can now say that comparing the two will be like comparing the Asus Eee PC to the MacBook Pro. Make no mistake, the comparison is just in the looks and feel. Unlike the 5800, the Eee delivers what is expected of it, I can say that as I use 1000H as my second PC, as storage device for some of my very important digital files and occasional browsing.

With its stylus, plectrum and other things, ie. with its crutches, Braille and thingummy it is a hopelessly second rate thing. I didn't get a single good snap with its camera. E61i did attract glances from everywhere and the sturdy phone was a steady and reliable performer too.

Since I dipped in the touch platform for the first time and seeing my disappointment my vendor offered me an iPhone 2G second hand. And I decided to take it. From the first day, I must say, I've become an iPhone fan. I know why it has such a cult following. I must also admit that I was bamboozled by the rants in the Symbian sympathizers that it is the best platform. All that is another issue though. Is this the beginning of the end of a great company called Nokia? I do not think that they will come up with a gem with N97.

Apart from the call issues-they are unpardonable-when my daughter tried to play the game Bounce and changed the screen orientation the phone restarted. It happened just once. But it is not expected of Nokia, is it?

Final thoughts: I've used Nokia's 5300, a series 40 device. I got the feeling that it is a cousin of that and similar devices. Nokia too may be saying the same by giving it the 58.. branding rather than N branding. But none of the other phones showed issues in the calling department.

It is clearly over priced for the services it is offering. Even if the issues are sorted out it should be sold for something like Rs 8000. The case of the phone creaks all over. If Nokia is trying to catch the fancy of touch-crazy public by offering it for such a huge price, then the company will be alienating so many of its loyal fans. I wanted to write a lot more about this buggy phone, but will stop here.
